NOMO ( MySpace ) (George Waldman) MP3: NOMO, "Nova" When: Tonight, Off Broadway, 8:30; Vintage Vinyl, 5 p.m. Sounds Like: "Nomo transcends fickle trends, "world" music comparisons and cheap hipster spirituality by laying down a propulsive mix of tightly wound funk, lush horn lines and exploratory improvisations. The band's latest full-length, Ghost Rock , manages to channel the past without sounding overly retro by incorporating electronic [...]

Robbie Fulks: The Scrapple Song [ purchase ] I was curious if we were gonna loosen the reins for the last two states because I've had this Fulks number waiting in the wings. Thankfully, I now get to share it. By the way, if you ever get to see Robbie live, he's hysterically funny, bears an uncanny resemblance to former Sixer, Shawn Bradley ( here's a pic of Fulks and here's a pic of Bradley ), and is an absolute monster of a guitar player. [...]

Well, after months of letting my hair grow into a well worn Mod 'do, I got the damn thing cleaned up last night. I rather liked how it was sitting on my head, so I just got it short enough to grow back into its proper/best looking length soon enough. It's just that in recent weeks it had surpassed that cool circa 1966-1968 look and tread dangerously into that 1969-1971 territory, and while the music was still great then, the haircuts got to be just a little too much. You gotta stay sharp. Anyway, [...]

ABC Family (I know, I know, but it's there and I stumble upon it sometimes, shoot me) recently reran one of my all time favorite movies, A League of Their Own. Now, it's not the same on ABC Family, of course, because Tom Hanks' amazing performance as Jimmy Dugan is highly edited (meaning the film's best bit -- when he's introduced to the crowd for the first time, tips his hat and drunkenly mutters "This is bullsh*t, you can all kiss my ass, yes you can!" through a phony smile), but [...]

2007 was the year Robbie Fulks unleashed his revenge on his fans...or, I should say, his Revenge! . The man is a fine country singer; he blends wit, humor, and weepers into a brilliant whole. While later records back away from his sarcastic, sassy, clever salad days humor, he's still an amazingly wonderful musician. Revenge! is a two-disc live set, though it's not a complete show; instead, the two discs contain two different forms of Robbie Fulks live; disc one finds him with a rather tight four-piece country-rock band, while [...]

How many times have you heard (or given) this answer to the question: "So... what kind of music do you like?" "Well... I like a lot. Actually, I'd say pretty much anything except country." I know I've said it in my lifetime. I don't anymore, but I know I've said it. And I know I still hear it at almost every large social gathering where people are meeting for the first time that I attend. It's usually not me asking, mind you, but isn't it fascinating that that's usually one of the first questions people ask [...]
Please allow me to be defensive for a second. Pitchfork slammed Robbie Fulks' new live disc Revenge! this week, focusing mainly on Fulks' schtick. While it's true the man is chock-full of schtick - and that if you don't buy it, you'll be too distracted to enjoy anything - his music is just amazing. Fulks is a first-rate country songwriter, a crazy bluegrass guitarist, and a first-class showman. The review also had an "alt-country is soooo outdated" angle to it, which, in Fulks' case, is ridiculous. There's nothing alt about Robbie Fulks' country. While it's certainly, uh, post-modern - song...

I really don't have any time for country music. And by country music, I mean the stuff that's on your average country radio station right now - Big 'n' Rich, Keith Urban, Dwight Yoakam, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith and pretty much anyone else you wanna toss in there. The problem with it - like with many of today's standard pop songs, is that the sheen on it is far too bright. Oh, and I hate the fact that every time I mention my appreciation of Lyle Lovett, someone goes "I thought you didn't like [...]
Once upon a time, there was a very lovely couple known to us only as A and R. A and R were very much in love, and knew the best way to commemorate that love was to get married. Having been to a couple of weddings before and known the DJs that prowl the wedding circuit—the ones who were always ready with a flexidisc of "Macarena" whenever the oh-so-hilarious spectacle of old people and little kids dancing presented itself—A and R decided their wedding would be different. Enter Robbie Fulks, a grizzled alt-country veteran with a sizable catalog of albums [...]
