This is a selection of songs performed for Austin City Limits by Robert Earl Keen , at the Austin City Limits Studios, Austin, Texas, USA. None of these songs were included on the official release 'Live In Austin' which is from a 2001 concert recording. Robert Earl Keen first performed on Austin City Limits in 1988 as part of the Texas Showcase which included four other artists. This selection also includes sets recorded in 1994 and 1997. Trying to place Robert in one music genre is difficult, hence the various descriptions below, [...]

I'm fixin' to barbecue up some ribs this afternoon - with temperatures at my house expected to be around 95 today, it feels like freakin' winter. Yeah it's been hotter than hell around here lately, but that can't stop me from barbecuin'! What about you? All you need is a fire of some sort, and some meat - and some barbecue sauce to cover up what you screw up. So let's get started ... you light the pit and I'll cue up some tunes! MP3: "Boogie Woogie Barbecue" by Mitch Woods [...]
Every year in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, there is a music festival that brings together hundreds of thousands of people and is a proven success - and it's not Outside Lands. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is the name, and the free three-day fest is in its 10th year. And judging by the lineup that dropped last night, this may be one of its best years. The names that stand out are frankly shocking gets for a free and ticketless festival: Joan Baez, Elvis Costello and the Sugarcanes, and the Godmother of Punk herself, Patti Smith. Other [...]

More than once someone has asked, "If I wanted to throw a party at my house and I wanted that Texas sound, what should I play?" Well if your house is in Buffalo, New York, then you can play the Goo Goo Dolls and and probably half the crowd would say "Yeah, that's Texas." (And hopefully the other half would correctly recognize the Goo Goos are a local band from Buffalo.) And unfortunately that's sort of the situation here in Texas. This state has many transplants who really couldn't identify a true Texas artist outside the obvious (Willie [...]
I'm in your corner, Kristen.
Well, this should be fun. The Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival has proved to be quite the epic annual event. For its 2010 edition, the festival organizers have decided to make the lineup announcement equally epic, so for the next 24 hours or so we'll be glued to our computer screens waiting to see who will be hitting Manchester, Tennessee from June 10-13. As previously mentioned, the lineup announcement will work something like this. Unlike previous announcements, the 2010 bill will not be unveiled all at once, but rather throughout the day, with the goal being [...]
The Dave Matthews Band has a history of mapping out rather extensive Summer tours featuring a rather exhaustive amount of opening acts. So, it come as little surprise that Mr. Matthews & Co. recently unveiled 2010 Summer itinerary includes five months worth of tour dates and 12 different openers. The band's travels, which come in support of the recently released Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King , will begin on May 28th in Hartford, CT. Highlights that follow include a two-night stint at New York's Citi Field and three [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Summertime means baseball games, backyard barbecues, dog days and, oh yeah -- Dave Matthews Band 's annual amphitheater outing. It's a bit of an American tradition, as is their rotating special guest opener slot which has highlighted a number of integrity acts and "IT" bands over the years. Looks like 2010 will stick with that exciting convention, as this year's support acts will include Raphael Saadiq , Brett Dennen , Gov't Mule , Ben Harper and the [...]

Just in time for Christmas, they are tellin' us that the weather will be in the 70s early this week then it should plunge to about 37 Friday night. Brrr, right? Well, down here we think cold weather - and all that "white Christmas" stuff - is overrated. The other day I had an eggnog with a little jalapeno in it and although it was downright awful, I didn't mind. Because this is Texas, you know? OK, I was counting the Bowl games comin' this year and there are a bunch in Texas: the Alamo Bowl (San Antonio), [...]
It isn't Christmas until you hear this song...

Robert Earl Keen might not be a household name in most parts of the country, but he is an icon down here in Texas. "Merry Christmas from the Family" is his take on a redneck Christmas. Keen describes the song this way: "Merry Christmas from the Family" describes the Christmas gathering of a fairly dysfunctional Texas family whose merrymaking, which includes drinking alcohol carving a turkey, watching a televised ball game and smoking cigarettes, seems to be punctuated with Christmas music and the need to run to convenience stores for additional supplies such as fake snow. [...]

Some days things just work together. While I was writing up the review of A Damn Good Ride I dropped by Jeremy Steding's website to look for his bio and such and found out he was playing in town that night. I grabbed a phone number off the site, made a call, and set up some time with him before the show. As luck would have it and one thing leading to another I wasn't as early as I wanted to be but since it was a Thursday night show there wasn't an opening act and [...]

I had a totally different entry planned for this weekend, I swear. But outside, the flakes are falling thick and fast in the first snowfall of the season. And inside, for the first time in a very, very long time, my heart is singing, loud and clear in the otherwise-quiet of a snow-hushed world. It starts in earnest just after supper. By the time I clean up and make my way outside, there's a two-foot-high snowman, squat and cheerful, looking up at me, the elderchild's scarf wrapped tightly around its [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive It's that time of year where people like to make lists and check them twice. While every music blogger and Facebook friend of yours prepares their Top 10 lists for 2009, singer-songwriter Todd Snider gave Spinner a look at his. He gives slots to Phish for their new album 'Joy' (No. 2), and to the Rolling Stones , for an upcoming reissue of their all-time classic album, 'Exile on Main Street' (No. 7). But Snider's top spot goes to -- drum roll, [...]

Now that the Thanksgiving eatin' is done, you may want to turn your attention to making some chili - particularly if it's cold in your part of the country. Legend has it that the spicy meat concoction was created by the chili queens of 1880s-era San Antonio who came up with the recipe we still use and enhance to this day. A righteous pot of chili ought to contain some sort of beef, chiles (or chili powder) and tomato sauce if you roll that way. The big argument is whether or not to add beans to chili. Now most [...]
