[Theory Recordings] Ben Sims has been a champion of driving, funk-inflected techno for much of his career. Known for frenetic and air-tight three-deck sets, Sims' own productions (and attendant labels) have been intrinsically connected to his DJing: functional tools designed for layering, and widely sampling from an extensive funk and disco collection. His production style became slightly more ambitious last year, however, with the release of the Smoke & Mirrors LP on Drumcode; and while the album was [...]
Skudge remix of Slow Motion at 1 hour 14 minutes. After a huge response in Marcel Fenglers Berghain mix, Slow Motion is set for release on Sims' very own Theory imprint this March with a huge remix package boasting works from Skudge, Robert Hood & Rolando. After an extended hiatus in 2011, it's now clear that both Theory & Ben Sims were preparing for both his debut LP Smoke & Mirrors, and this almighty 40th release. A heavyweight number suited for only the darkest of caverns and the truest of sound systems. Swedish duo [...]
At this point, does an artist like Robert Hood require an introduction? (After all, we did put him on the cover of XLR8R last year.) All kidding aside, the man is a Detroit techno legend, although these days he calls Alabama home. A founding member of Underground Resistance and one of the first pioneers of the minimal sound, Hood is still going strong more than 20 years into his career, running his own M-Plant label and continuing to drop releases, both under his own name and as Floorplan. (As it turns out, he just released a new single, "Greatest Dancer" [...]
In 2001 Detroit house legend Robert Hood dropped an edit of Sister Sledge's The Greatest Dancer which was so insanely up-tempo, that if one ever had plans to introduce disco to the hardcore scene, it would probably have been a good place to start. To be fair, who knows what the fuck we were listening to back then, it's all relative to the time etc... Anyway a decade later, perhaps as an homage to its origins, Hood has just re-released The Greatest Dancer on a two track EP . The accompanying [...]

[ M-Plant ] Rightly or wrongly, Robert Hood is mainly associated with that most abstract strain of minimalism. Maybe this is because Hood's body of work from the 902s had such a hugely profound effect on electronic dance music that emerged in Europe over the past decade; but framing his catalog and passions against this narrow framework does the Detroit producer a disservice. There are a myriad of other cultural reasons and [...]
Floorplan is an occasionally used pseudonym for Robert Hood. His work under his own name can be very dark, very spartan and very metallic. This EP lightens up a lot more and is the better as a result. Clips only to listen I'm afraid. There are 3 tracks on the Sanctified EP. It starts with We Magnify His Name . This is the same ecstatic gospel vibe as Primal Scream's Come Together. But the repeated sample ends up making it feel like and unsubtle piece of prosletysing. Baby Baby is more House in its jerky manner. [...]
★★★★☆ After doing enough to make work a techno album from a '70s Chuck Heston film (and who are we to argue with scene masters of this magnitude anyway?), Robert Hood is returns with a sort sequel. Constantly sending you down do-or-die corridors as time ticks away, Hood is unhurried despite his finger hovering over a destructive stopwatch button; opener "Bells at Dusk" shows the challenge ahead at nearly 11 minutes long. It's a meaner set that's boomingly persuasive and compellingly minimal to the point of being perverse, rammed home by "Minimal, Minimal," an instructive buzzword [...]
I first heard Das Glow back in 2007 when Weiss Gaz came out and, whilst I proper loved that tune, after all it is filthy as hell; I will hold my hand up and say that I kinda forgot all about him. Until the other day that is. For some reason the tune popped into my head so I sought him out on Facebook, had a listen and clicked 'like' on the page. Boy am I glad I did because this morning a link popped up to a new mix called Blah Blah Blah. It didn't [...]
