The Blues, the beginning of Rock and Rock as we now know it. It's a musical genre, a feeling, a philosophy, and for some, a way of life. The Blues can lift you up one day only to describe an awful feeling inside the next. From 'Blues Power' to 'Folsom Prison Blues' the music is a powerful medium through which many men and women have articulated the highs and lows of life on earth. Below are my top ten Blues musicians of all time ranging from the originator Robert Johnson to the modern day shredder Jack White. 1. [...]

Here's a very decent 1992 doc about the mysterious Robert Johnson . No original Johnson recordings are used, but narrator John Hammond does a good job in his renditions. "Honeyboy" Edwards and Johnny Shines also appear, as well as Eric Clapton and Keith Richards. Thanks to T. Tex Edwards for this one.

"Bukka White, Son House, Robert Johnson...for a town with two street lights, it was pretty amazing that you could find those records." Daniel Lefkowitz and Jared Elmore 's space-folk project Futur Primitif tour Europe at the end of the Summer including a stop-off at The G-Man's favourite little festival End of the Road . No stranger to the delightful Dorset setting (Lefkowitz is a former member of Low Anthem who have played the festival more times than [...]

The quartet Marrakech , hailing from Umeå, have taken their band name from a song by Crosby, Stills & Nash, "Marrakech Express". And even if CSN is not exactly what comes to my mind, when I listen to Marrakech's first single, I land somewhere in that era. What I hear is psyckadelic rock and blues rock, flavoured with the fact that they sing in Swedish. In the song "Mitt Liv" ("My Life") I'm reminded at first of Cream but soon I feel quite a few Led Zeppelin vibes. That feeling remains to some extent when I listen to the second [...]

Wading into the history of the Delta Blues can get as murky as wading into the Mississippi itself. Case in point being someone like Willie Brown. On paper Willie Brown would not be considered an important Delta Blues musician. His entire recording career consisted of only 6 songs recorded for Paramount Records in 1930. Of these, only two songs have ever been found. He may have recorded as or with an artist named Kid Bailey. He probably recorded the song “ Make Me a Pallet on the Floor ” for blues historian Alan Lomax in 1941. However, one can never [...]

Showtime: 10pm Price: $7 Performing on this fine evening at the Crossroads (721 Clinton Avenue) in Huntsville, Alabama.

Nostalgic blues act, Gary Clark Jr. , who we introduced over two years ago has finally announced his 13-song major label debut, Blak and Blu , to be released October 22nd via Warner Bros. The blues singer/guitarist switches up his usual Robert Johnson style and goes electric for the album's first single, "Ain't Messin' 'Round" , which takes a page out of The Black Keys book in it's riff and delivery, though freshening it up with a [...]

The life and death of bluesman Robert Johnson is one of the major myths in American music. Not only he sold his soul to the devil, but he was (allegedly) poisoned to death at the age of 27. At the time, the death of a black musician did not deserve to be investigated and therefore [...]

Not only is there something quite nice about 33.22, and it falling on 07/06 (unless you are American), but this is also the 666th published post on Aye Tunes. That doesn't count quite a lot of crap ones that have been published in the past that I've pulled for one reason or another - main reason being they were crap - but as of now there's 666 bits of nonsense by me* on here. That's probably quite a poor return for four years work, but whatever. So, yes, songs. I resisted temptation to make it all metal [...]

Filed under: The Hit List Getty | WireImage | Getty May 29, 2012 marked the 15th anniversary of Jeff Buckley 's accidental drowning. For whatever reason, some people believe that the singer-songwriter's death was "mysterious," possibly suicide, but the facts don't support this in any way: Buckley was there with a friend, had gone swimming there, wasn't intoxicated, etc. But that got us thinking about musicians who actually died under mysterious circumstances. Whether [...]
