Religion has been used in numerous films as a symbol for what is good and what is evil. When used effectively, religion can make a film very uplifting or extremely chilling. Charles Laughton's thrilling film, The Night of the Hunter , falls into the latter category. Laughton's film features two characters that have dutifully follows the teaching of The Bible, but interpret it in vastly different ways. Based on the novel by Davis Grubb, and set in 1930s West Virgin, The Night of the Hunter is a cautionary tale of the [...]

It's Robert Mitchum's birthday today, a perfect excuse to indulge my predilection for cheese both edible and audible. While this collection of rum soaked self deprecation is more goofy fun than a stab at commercial success or artistic integrity Mitchum's no slouch in the vocal department. His own voice was used whenever a roll called for him to sing, including Rachel and the Stranger, River of No Return and The Night of the Hunter . He discovered the sultry tones of calypso while filming Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison on location in the Caribbean on the [...]
![At Long Last, Idolator Pays Tribute To Moonshinin' Music [Videodrone Extra]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1493563_lg.jpg)
Lost in the shuffle over a whether or not Mark Mudd was threatening the life of Paula Abdul was the fact that someone auditioned for American Idol with a George Jones song about moonshine. And the related fact that Randy Jackson said it was a "great song." Sure, Simon Cowell might not understand the appeal of music outside the Whitney Houston catalog, but there's an entire segment of our American populace that enjoys hearing songs about backwoods distilleries, and that segment includes this part-time blogger. The greatest thing about having this space is that the only deadlines are those I place on myself. That said, I am constantly wavering between the desire to do longer, more thoughtful pieces which take a whole lot of time and result in fewer posts or, doing those, yet augmenting the place with shorter, more immediate daily updates. I'm leaning heavily, though, toward the former. Although I flatter myself thinking that there are regular readers that stop by here I have no idea if that's true or not. All I know is that I don't want 24HourPartyPooper to be another [...]
We like to think Robert Mitchum's dubious accent on this song proves he was the Collie Buddz of his day.

I hate to disappoint the 1600 or so lost souls that stop by in a given day a th this URL but folks, I'm outta here this weekend, and on the road to Pepperland. I don't mean new mexico green chiles either. I'll have a bit of net access here and there I suppose from hotels & whatnot, but don't count on any dastardly daily updates until I venture back north. I'll be heading down to la La Landia, and on the agenda is my 1st visit to it's renowned Hollywood Bowl to catch a [...]

Well, It's a story as old as the hills. Or at least as old as the Bible. The wolf in sheep's clothing. The false prophet. The devil in disguise. Okay, you get the picture. Karl and Harty sing about " a preacher with a cane and a long-tailed coat, he does all his preachin' with his eye on the women-folk." He then proceeds to hustle, get drunk, steal, and carry on with Brother Jackson's wife. Enjoy. [...]
