Welcome to my late-night/early-morning post inspired by the purchases I made earlier today (technically yesterday) for $1 or less at the used record store: Paul Young "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (Joy Division cover) I feel over the years I've divulged a lot of personal information about my past with music of a somewhat embarrassing nature. I believe what I'm about to admit far surpasses all previous embarrassment. You ready? Okay, here goes: This is the first version of this song that I ever heard. Oh, god. And I [...]

Robert Palmer: Not a Second Time Robert Palmer covering some fellow Brits. Buy Robert Palmer here .
Robert Palmer - Sneakin' Sally Thru The Alley Now many people - possibly "every kind of people" indeed - are gonna be thinking "What the hell is ROBERT PALMER doing on Dilate.Choonz? Since when did this become a retirement home for the worst of 80s pop-rock excess?" (So excessive in fact that the man collapsed with a heart attack in 2003 aged only 54...) But the strange fact is that in 1974 Palmer managed to record a classic white-boy soul funk LP, Sneakin' Sally Thru [...]

On the few occasions when my devout atheism wobbles, I call to mind the fact that a just and fair God would not allow Shaun Ryder and Shane McGowan to still be walking among us when Robert Palmer is six feet under. This isn't a value judgement on their music (though I've never understood the appeal of The Pogues); merely an observation about the relative health of all concerned. Shaun and Shane, who've been responsible for a large percentage of the GDP of Afghanistan, Bolivia and Dublin between them, are still dragging their cadaverous frames around the circuit. Palmer, on [...]

Robert Palmer: Riptide [1985] Robert Palmer: I Didn't Mean To Turn You On [1985] Palmer took a plunge to find the wonderful Riptide , which was composed by the songwriting team of Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn . I Didn't Mean To Turn You On was composed by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis . I suggest listening to I Didn't Mean To Turn You On immediately after Riptide ends. Riptide makes a nice intro to the light [...]

Robert Palmer: Johnny and Mary [1980] When Emmett first explained the concept of this blog to me, this is the song that popped into my head. Not that rare, but I love it. During my darkest moments, I understand this song. Earlier I posted another song from Clues, which should be in everyone's collection .
This week's funky Friday is dedicated to Robert Palmer. Possessed of a unique voice and a willingness to experiment, Robert's career began in 1970 when he joined jazz-rock fusion band Dada, which also featured singer Elkie Brooks. A year later the two of them formed the r'n'b group Vinegar Joe, who went on to release three albums. In 1973 Robert went solo, and his debut LP Sneakin' Sally Through

American Psycho , starring Christian Bale as a yuppy working on Wall Street in 1987 who spends much of his free time murdering people, is not what you would call a movie for everyone. Nor is the Bret Easton Ellis book it was based upon. I haven't gotten around to reading the book, so I can't comment on how the film compared. I did like the film, and especially Bale's performance as the psychotic Patrick Bateman. I first saw it with a former professor, and good friend, when it first came out and I [...]
