Slim Harpo (1924 -1970) was the man alright. A Louisiana swamp blues king if ever there was one, he never worked full-time as a musician. The trucking business was probably a safer bet. Nevertheless, many of his songs have long since become immortal, and were covered by the Stones, the Yardbirds, Them, and Alex Chilton amongst many others. His old friend and admirer Robert Pete Williams, a legendary bluesman in his own right, paid the 'original King Bee' an impressive tribute on the heartfelt Goodbye Slim Harpo . "Goodbye poor Slim, I see you again..." [...]

Robert Pete Williams - Levee Camp Blues ( buy ) Harry Oster, an ethnomusicologist from LSU, went to Angola Prison in 1958 to record inmates, just like Peter Lomax did in 1933. And just like Lomax discovered Leadbelly there, Oster found Robert Pete Williams, sentenced to life for murder in 1956. Robert Pete is one of the most fascinating bluesmen of the blues revival. Like Lightnin' Hopkins, he sang stream of consciousness blues, and never sang the same song twice the same way. Like Oster says in the liner notes, if you [...]

Long live the weekend, the weekend is here. And it´s gonna be another wild one... My iPod shuffle function picks the tunes, and we´ll just have to wait and see what comes up. Ready, set, go. Let´s get this show on the road with some intense blues from the inimitable Robert Pete Williams. Recorded live in Angola Prison , where the guitarist was doing time for fatally shooting a (white) man in what was probably self-defence. "Some got six months, but me and my buddies got a lifetime here..." These ´59 [...]

And in the evening, when the sun´s gone down and it´s cooled off a bit, I love to play me some of that old blues. There´s nothing better than sitting on your porch late at night, drink in hand and stars overhead, listening to the masters from the Delta or the windy city. So here´s another tenpack, filled to the brim with blues treasures I´ve been digging recently. First one who writes in to tell me which famous band stole That´s No Way To Get Along gets the For The Sake Of The Song Crossroads award... [...]
I found this track Angola Patience Blues - Robert Pete Williams Even more desperately I found Serenity

i looked for this record, originally recorded for Prestige Records in 1961, for many years, having had it loaned to me by a professor of mine while at school. between that prof and a harp-blowing friend i made during my brief residence in Ottawa, i was introduced to the whole world of the blues. all of the tapes i made of those records were long ago played right out, or left in a box of obsolete technologies. eventually i gave up the active search and was overjoyed last night to discover it all zipped up and ready for download at [...]

mp3: captain beefheart & the magic band - i'm glad mp3: the black keys - i'm glad another captain beefheart cover this week. the black keys recorded and then posted this cover of "i'm glad" to their myspace last week and that is, to my knowledge, the only release the song will see. if that's true, it's a shame because "i'm glad" is the best cover the band has ever recorded, at least in the mind of this casual black keys fan, and i'm sure there's [...]
