The lineup for the 2011 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival has been unveiled, and as always, it's a doozy. Like previous years, the classic bluegrass/folk is well-represented in the form of Gillian Welch , Steve Earle (as well as son Justin Townes Earle ), Emmylou Harris , Earl Scruggs , Bela Fleck and many more. And as expected, plenty of non-bluegrass acts are peppered throughout the lineup, including Robert Plant , Thurston Moore , Broken Social Scene , Bright Eyes , Mekons , [...]
San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival will once again provide broke festival fanatics with one last chance for a weekend full of music before the harsh reality of winter sets in. Set for September 30 - October 2 at Golden Gate Park, this year's edition offers Robert Plant & the Band of Joy, Bright Eyes, Bob Mould, Broken Social Scene, and Buckethead for the price of your attendance - aka, it's free. Other notable acts include John Prine, Bill Kirchen, Gomez, DeVotchKa, Gillian Welch, Dr. John & the [...]

Rival Sons is a band that isn't playing around when it plays. Pressure And Time (Earache), their second studio album is some serious 702s-style hard rock that brings to mind Led Zeppelin, Foghat and even a bit of Ram Jam a la their "Black Betty" cover fame. They've opened for AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Kid Rock and other older, hard rock acts. Without question, Rival Sons is one opening band that can close the deal and become its own headliner. There is a palpable commitment with them to pull out some rock from its proper roots - the manlier [...]
Blues history, three-chord pop and some damn good hard rock fun make up this week's collection.
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Antonio Calanni, AP/PA Robert Plant has the reputation of being one of the nicest people in rock for good reason. The erstwhile Led Zeppelin frontman paid tribute to his former producer -- by playing a charity gig to just 200 people in a village hall. The one-time Golden God joined three local musicians on July 11 to revisit his Led Zeppelin back catalogue and [...]
KLCS PBS television in Los Angeles airs Sun Studio Sessions tonight at 10:00pm, just before Austin City Limits. This week's episode features Backyard Tire Fire. As we've said before, we've been fans of these guys for years now and they're super musicians and plain good people. Relentless road warriors whose music has a "storyteller's touch and a guitar god's muscle" (Paste Magazine), Back Yard

Chuck Klosterman, a New York Times bestselling author of six books, recently devoted blog space to a lengthy analysis of Led Zeppelin's 1979 performance of 'In the Evening' at Knebworth. It's insightful, detailed, and incredibly amusing. In fact, I think Klosterman missed only one point. He acknowledges the reported heroin problems that essentially rendered Jimmy Page and John Bonham as

Sully Erna - Avalon Sully Erna, front man for the band Godsmack has released his new album "Avalon" into the world. This is a collection of music put perfectly together after many years in the making. Track by track each song more powerful then the next, stretching his musical talent to new places. Different from the Godsmack style and sound, this album has a Pink Floyd trippy vibe, with a mix of tribal chanting and maybe even some Led Zep tossed into the mix. Very difficult to classify, in the words of Sully "If you listen [...]

This is Robert Plant's touring band Priory Of Brion who undertook a good number of gigs between July 23rd 1999 through until Dec 21st 2000. This is the band live at The Beaufort Theatre, Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent, Wales, back on the 11th February 2000. During this phase of live concerts the venues tended to be smaller in size and as can be heard from this concert recording the atmosphere was warm and included some fine banter with the audience. Excerpted from ROOTS magazine, Aug/Sep 2000 [...]

Sunday at Bonnaroo held some mixed feelings for me. On one hand I was extremely sad that this magical weekend was coming to an end and trying to figure out if I could still function in 'normal' society again. On the other hand, I was getting pretty tired of waking up with the damned sun and I smelled so badly I don't think showers wanted me to get in them! But the show must go on... Highlights for Sunday included legendary Allman Brothers Singer/Organ player Gregg Allman, who did his own take on [...]

Photos by G. Art by Jeanne Wilkinson . Jeanne Wilkinson's art June 15, 2011 was a night of Video Alchemy. Literally! Artists Jeanne Wilkinson and Elizabeth Riley presented new works for a special one-night only pop-up art show called "Video Alchemy" at the Creon Gallery in New York. Both artists showcased new video projects that were a treat for the eyes. These short films were shown outside as the sun was setting, which enhanced the viewing experience. The imagery was also extremely trippy and definitely gave [...]
It was VERY cool seeing Robert Plant - can't believe I've lived almost 40 years and have never seen one of my favorite singers. But, in a way, I'm sort of glad I didn't see the "Heaven Knows" , "Little By Little" , "Tall Cool One" -era Robert Plant because while I like those songs (actually, quite a bit), that feels more like Plant's attempt and becoming a pop-rock (maybe pop's not the right word, maybe "radio-friendly" is what I'm looking for) star. He seems to be in his element now as he's gone back [...]
Luther and Cody Dickinson were born with instruments in their hands and their dad, legendary music producer Jim Dickinson (Big Star, The Replacements, etc.), probably would have been disappointed had his sons grown up to be doctors or lawyers. Fortunately, the two continued on the family's musical legacy by forming the North Mississippi Allstars , along with bassist Chris Chew, back in 1996. With Robert Plant's relatively recent dedication to revisiting old blues, folk and country songs, it makes total sense that he's invited the Dickinson brothers (under the name [...]

That's like, a lot of people, man. Outside of surprisingly tame Warped Tour (2004) and Lollapalooza (2006) experiences, I am pretty unlearned in the way of big-time festivals. I like wireless internet. I like duvets. Hell, I love long showers. But, against my better judgment and my body's wishes, I will be making the roughly 700 mile trek this Wednesday evening with 75,000 other junkies, goons, hippies, hipsters, hoopsters, blipsters, eagle scouts and everyone else in-between to the muggy fields of Manchester, Tenn. All joking aside, Bonnaroo is about the music, and we have [...]
