Or, if nothing else, at least his most productive. Formerly the lone constant of Guided By Voices (a band that released 16 albums, as many EPs, and four box sets in 17 years), the man of 1,000 songs seems to be dead-set on making 2007 his most productive year yet. Thus far, the year has seen Robert Pollard releasing the symphonic, ambitious Silverfish Trivia concept EP (Prom Is Coming), the second installment of his Asshole standup comedy series, Meet the King [...]

"Seven Curses" by BOB DYLAN: One of the darkest, most powerful Dylan songs I've ever discovered was included in the 3 CD box set The Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3 , the same release from which I previously cribbed "I'll Keep it With Mine." "Seven Curses" tells the story of a man named Old Reilly who goes to jail for stealing a horse and is sentenced to hang. Reilly's daughter hears news of her father and comes bearing riches to free him, but the judge gives her only one option: you must sleep with me to free your dad. [...]
Released by Luna Music, Crickets: The Best of The Fading Captain Series compiles fifty six of Pollards self-released solo joints throughout the years in a (kinda) tidy two-disc set. This is huge, personally, as a) it's a nice set to play in the car, b) I never bought all those records, and c) I [...]

This is way late, but better late than never. Things have been crazy this week. Lots of noteworthy new releases. I've got about 10 of these already, but there are a few more I need to pick up. By the way, Matador recently reissued the first three Pavement albums on LP. Top Five New Releases: All Smiles : Ten Readings of a Warning (Dangerbird) – Former LA resident, Jim Fairechild was the guitarist in Grandaddy (and Earlimart for a bit too). He does the indie singer-songwriter thing on this new album. He and his band are [...]

This week is haunted by what didn't make it into Rhapsody (see below,) but we're still blessed with some sturdy releases from Arctic Monkeys, Dntel and the star-studded Joni Mitchell tribute album . Playlist: New Releases 04.24.07 ------------------------------ ---------------- Album: A Tribute to Joni Mitchell While the album leads off with a bang ( Sufjan Stevens doing "Free Man In Paris" ,) it's not until you [...]
One of the many things that I missed over the last month, as I was going crazy trying to wind down my affairs as a lawyer, was news of Robert Pollard's new mini-LP, Silverfish Trivia. The 7-track, 22 minute disc comes out this Tuesday, April 24th, and is available for pre-order now. The lead track, "Circle Saw Boys Club", is making the rounds, and it's damn good if I say so myself. Very

Robert Pollard - Normal Happiness ( Merge ) A forgettable attempt at guitar pop that shows Pollard going through the motions while providing little to disprove that his best days ended with Guided by Voices.

The opportunity to look back on all of the music released in a given year usually helps to put things into perspective. In years past, there were clear-cut winners, a few also rans and the rest. Last year , for example, My Morning Jacket was my top pick, with all others a distant second and beyond. This year, things were different. It took a couple of weeks to really nail down this list of 25 top discs. The good news is that I was afforded another chance to really listen to a lot of great music. The [...]

Part Two of our Year In Review... Part One can be found HERE. The following list is comprised of my favorite 12 albums released in 2006. Take note that this list is in flux, and could be very different a month from now. For example, last year I declared Sufjan Steven's Illinois as my top [...]

In House #1727: Jeremy Enigk's World Waits ; New Robert Pollard T his week sees the return of Jeremy Enigk , whose previous solo effort Return of the Frog Queen came out a decade ago. World Waits is the new release from the former voice of Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft , and it finds Enigk in a decidedly more mature frame [...]

Robert Pollard - Normal Happiness Robert Pollard - Moon After getting his prog on earlier this year with a sprawling double album (From A Compound Eye), Robert Pollard 's second post-GBV solo album finds him focusing on the tightly crafted pop gems that made him an indie rock icon. Only three of the sixteen songs on Normal Happiness clock in at over 2 1/2 minutes, and the longest track on the album only exceeds that mark by 62 seconds. Aided [...]
Now that I work in a record store, I'm finally realizing when albums are released. I'm trying to narrow down my "Staff Pick" choice, and Robert Pollard's Normal Happiness is definitely in the running. Well I tried to get this week's Graboid up on it's usual Wednesday but ezarchive was pretty much down most of the night. As I was about to give up and just call it a night, voilà ! it starts to work again. So here I am still awake at 5 a.m. finishing up on it. I'm starting to get back into the swing of things here and starting to listen to a lot of the music that has been piling in my email and at home. During my little on/off hiatus I managed to go back [...]

Even with the end of Guided By Voices , frontman Robert Pollard remains more then prolific in his output. Normal Happiness represents his second solo album released this year (the first being From a Compound Eye ) on top of albums from side projects Pyscho and the Birds, The Takeover, and Keene Brothers (with Tommy Keene .) Normal Happiness , however, represents a change.... or perhaps an [...]
The Awkward Stage - Heaven is For Easy Girls (buy it) Vancouver pop ace Abram Nelken, who's worked with A.C. Newman and Sparrow, debuts on Mint with an album full of throwback pop hooks and melodies and desperation aplenty. Not quite as busy as Newman's Pornographers, this is fine songwriting wrapped in bittersweet cotton candy, somewhere in the Shins' zip code. MP3: The Awkward Stage - Heaven
