Roberto Carlos Lange is the South Florida born and raised son Ecuadorian immigrants and grand master of Helado Negro. A band that has been exploring new corners of "psyhe-folk" or better said, a band that can not be defined by any one genre. I was fortunate enough to ask Lange a few questions that have been brewing in my mind since listening to Awe Owe. I hope this gives us all a bit of insight to what we are listening to and what will come from Helado Negro. For more on Roberto Carlos Lange go to: asthmatickitty.com and [...]

Woodwinds, bagpipes, cell phone vibrations – Lange culls an imaginative array of sounds into a single compelling package. Moving from dancefloor beats to sheer ethereal ambience, with some nods to jazz and classical influences along the way, Music for Memory is a stunning and memorable achievement, an organic trip across electronic landscapes. Asthmatic Kitty Records has some pretty cool stuff going on with their catalog series that includes a number of popular artists playing instrumental music based on certain themes (Insomnia, Tropical Savagery, Memory). Their hope is that this music will eventually play as background music for when you're doing dishes, commuting, cooking, sleeping (or trying [...]
If my understanding of roman numerals is correct, this week's Friday Mixtape marks out 80th edition! 80... that's a big number! So big in fact that we felt it was necessary to celebrate by piecing together one hell of a mix of new singles, remixes, covers, and mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. Enjoy! NEW Singles: "I Don't Like Your Band" by Annie "Tiger Tamer" by Arms [...]

Asthmatic Kitty , the label home and Michigan outpost of Sufjan Stevens, has an interesting record series called Library Catalog devoted to music basically prepped for a utilitarian role. What that is, or turns out to be seems ambiguous. They write of series: "for possible use in films and television, background sounds for home or office, or personal needs, such as relaxation, stimulation, meditation, concentration, or elevation," or more specifically as "accompaniment to cooking, eating, sculpting, exercising, high stakes poker, soaking, panoramic landscapes, cuddling, car chases, drawing, knitting, bandaging, romance, playing chess, or planning the rest of your [...]
Few musicians have the ability to turn on and off their creative juices as easily as Sufjan Stevens. After all, following what was essentially a year-plus of silence, the acclaimed singer/songwriter has returned with three, count 'em three, studio releases. We already told you about Run Rabbit Run and The BQE ; now let us share details regarding Stevens brand new collaborative effort with his stepfather/Asthmatic Kitty owner Lowell Brams. On December 8th, Asthmatic Kitty will offer three more releases from its Library Catalog series, [...]

It has taken snail mail, multiple recommendations and a few reminders but I have finally laid down and soaked in Helado Negro 's Awe Owe (out 8/4 on Asthmatic Kitty ). What I've found rooted in these expressions is a valuable documentation of how Roberto Carlos Lange understands sound and its incorporation into forming intended music. The character of "Dos Sueños" forms waves which remain at a constant bar, as the sounds of a guitar fade under the horizon a subtle and almost lullaby vocal melody rises in acknowledgment of where to keep focus. [MP3] Helado Negro - Deja [MP3] Helado Negro - Jellyfish
