October means we're happily knee-deep in baseball, surrounded by seasonal pumpkin ales, and, regrettably, wrist-deep in the slimy insides of jack-o-lanterns. Music has been my quiet oasis. I figure it's high time I stop futzing over my autumn mix and share it already. The fall mix is one of my favorites to make. In addition to being generally hyperaware of everything around me in life, especially subtexts and undercurrents, I notice an acute sharpening of my senses every time the seasons change. It's why I make you guys these seasonal mixes: as everything in the natural world [...]
So, here commences a busy weekend of giggery, with Oxjam's Edinburgh Takeover kicking off tonight (beware Toads bearing flyers!) and then Rob St. John's album launch at Pilrig St. Paul's tomorrow, with Meursault, eagleowl and Viking Moses. In the meantime, for me at least, there is an increasingly chilly office to sit in, although thankfully today seems pretty mild. It's a bit like when you're sitting at your desk in increasing need of a piss - I have just been sitting here getting colder and colder and wondering just how uncomfortable I will have to get before I [...]

Fall means at least two things to me: football and listening to music at a different temperature. Walking outside first thing in the morning and hearing Zola Jesus when it's 57 degrees out is entirely different than when it's a milky 93 degrees. (Sorry, southern California. Ya'll got blackouts and heat waves now?). Where warm weather lifts the burden of a song, cold weather adds gravity to it. Summer songs are trickling off now, and whilst I enjoy that fiscal freedom where there's no heat or air conditioning bills, I'm beginning to dust off those [...]
Video: Robin Pecknold - “I Let You” Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold turned in another memorable solo encore performance last night in Seattle, capping off the band’s set with a song he hadn’t performed publicly before: “I Let You”,” a new folk ballad, finger-picked lightly under a bare spotlight and adorned solely by Pecknold’s voice filling the Paramount Theater. 107.7 The End have a decent recording of the performance, but I think the long-distance angle and steady shot in the above clip captures the poignant mood quite beautifully. Robin Pecknold & Alela Diane Cover “These Days”
Two nights ago in Milan, Italy's Teatro Smeraldo, Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold joined the evening's opener, Portland-based Rough Trade singer-songwriter Alela Diane, for a pretty pass at Jackson Browne's oft-covered stone-cold classic "These Days." It's a folk take, of course, fingerpicked and harmonized and doing justice the song's enduring introspective pangs of overcast mopery. It's somewhere between Nico and Jackon's recorded versions of it, with a touch Pac-Northwest plaid. Watch it, grab it: Read More...
