Lucky Seven – Live and Unreleased!

Lucky Seven – Live and Unreleased! Got to thinking about a couple of the self-deprecating comments I made in the last post, and thought "I'll put a couple of them right at least…" So here's the first Lucky Seven for a good while, and it's made up of some of the recordings I made during 2011, which are currently languishing unattended on my hard-drive. Summer Holiday – Wild Nothing Chinatown– Destroyer Undegpedwar – Y Niwl BatteryKinzie - Fleet Foxes Queen of Eyes – Robyn Hitchcock Don't Want Love – Antlers [...]

Seven Records I'm Proud to Have Bought in 2011

Seven Records I'm Proud to Have Bought in 2011 Here's to Taking It Easy – Phosphorescent Pride saw arch finger-pointer Matthew Hauk and pals sound a bit Bon Iver-y, which was OK but 2010's follow up was a much more ballsy, countrified affair, with brass, slide guitars and riffs all over the shop –terrific value. I think I've already posted a video of my favourite track ( "God damn, Amanda, God damn it all"), so here's the opener – Bah bah badda ba badda bah! [...]

Interview: Mike Viola (opening for Rachael Yamagata @ The Basement, Sunday night)

Interview: Mike Viola (opening for Rachael Yamagata @ The Basement, Sunday night) It seemed like a strange billing - one of the most criminally underrated power-pop songwriters of our lifetime opening for a young, up-and-coming female singer-songwriter - a tour that makes a stop in Columbus, at The Basement, on Sunday night. But, as Mike Viola explained when I talked to him on the phone from Alabama last week, it all makes sense. Viola is currently on tour promoting his latest release, Electro De Perfecto , which came out in October. If I'm doing my math correctly, this is Viola's 11th release [...]

Review of We Were Promised Jetpacks' In The Pit Of The Stomach

Review of We Were Promised Jetpacks' In The Pit Of The Stomach Nic Shonfeld Alongside labelmates and countrymen The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit , Glasgow-via-Edinburgh's We Were Promised Jetpacks should have formed a 21st century dream team of new Scottish acts, dispensing their peoples' distinctive brand of angst through their respective brands of rock. And yet while those other two won and maintain places in my heart, Jetpacks' 2009 debut These Four Walls did't quite win me over. The specifics of why aren't entirely clear, but I suspect that it was just a little too [...]

Robyn Hitchcock: Chronolology

Robyn Hitchcock: Chronolology Robyn Hitchcock: Chronology Robyn Rowan Hitchcock is a cult. For 35 years, he's wandered a singular road, building a reputation but avoiding regimentation despite being signed by two US majors. His talent has been allowed to develop like a long-bubbling goulash, a strange chemistry that's taken him from a punkoid Syd Barrett to a weirdly visionary character like a Home Counties David Lynch. He's performed solo and in various configurations [...]

And Bands: So You Think You're In Love

And Bands: So You Think You're In Love Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians : So You Think You're In Love [ purchase ] You probably have never heard of Dennis and the Experts. I certainly hadn't until I did research for this post. Formed in 1976, they soon changed their name to The Soft Boys. The Soft Boys included Robyn Hitchcock, Morris Windsor, and Andy Metcalfe, plus one of three guitarists, depending on when you asked. It was only in the last year the band was together that Metcalfe left, to be replaced by Matthew Selligman. The band broke [...]

List 'Em Carefully: 10 Artists with the 15-Plus-Year Itch

List 'Em Carefully: 10 Artists with the 15-Plus-Year Itch It's remarkable when a band or artist sticks around creating new music for more than 15 years. The hard work involved in doing that under the auspices of mainstream or indie labels is something that should be recognized and applauded. It's all more impressive still when a band or artist's excellence is underrated- or virtually unrecognized by the critical and/or listener mainstream. The most impressive? The band/artist doesn't get frustrated, doesn't complain. It soldiers on, not giving one fuck, just doing its thing, even as the music it influences gets more recognition. This new edition of [...]

Update On YepRoc Soft Boys Underwater Moonlight Reissue

Some time ago I posted news that YepRoc would be reissuing the Soft Boys' 1980 classic album, Underwater Moonlight , on LP. At the time I passed along information in good faith that was provided by YepRoc via email that turned out to be inaccurate, and I feel a responsibility to set the record straight. At the time of my original post in November of 2010, the LP release had been delayed, and YepRoc passed along news from Robyn Hitchcock that explained the delay and described the recut version. After having purchased the LP, it [...]
