George Wright With most of his recent releases being of the archival sort - two box sets in the last two years in the form of I Wanna Go Backwards and Luminous Groove and with more to come - you might be forgiven for thinking that Robyn Hitchcock had his hands full reflecting on an enormous and impressive career. You would also, of course, be wrong. Even while supervising the extensive retrospective project, Hitchcock found the time to regroup with the Venus 3 - [...]

All things considered, there really is nothing surprising about The Hazards of Love, the newest release from Portland, Oregon's The Decemberists. Colin Meloy has been singing about rakes and rastabouts, corn crakes, villains[...]

Throughout 1979 and 1980 Thomas Dolby had gained experience touring with a number of bands doing sound, had recorded with Bruce Woolley & the Camera Club and even recorded his own single, "Urges"/"Leipzig", with the help of Andy Partridge. Following on a spell with the short-lived Fallout Club, he decided, at the start of 1981, to put together his own band. First up was his friend and bassist Matt Seligman, who had played alongside Dolby in both the Fallout Club and Camera Club. (What's up with all these clubs anyway?) Dolby went along to a gig at the [...]

This song came on The Loft the other day. I had forgotten that back in 2004 Robyn Hitchcock made an album with Late Greats fav Gillian Welch and David Rawlings called Spooked. A truly great collection of songs, including this Dylan cover. I remember discovering the joys of Robyn Hitchcock in 1988 when Globe of Frogs was released. I was sixteen. Of course, my reason for giving it a spin in the first place was solely because R.E.M.'s Peter Buck played on it.

Seattle sci-f pop genii Hotels continue to receive glowing praise for their latest masterpiece Where Hearts Go Broke . The love continues from wonderful Seattle-based radio station KEXP, where the Hotels' track 'Kite Fight' has been included on the Music That Matters podcast Vol. 137 put together by the very awesome Kevin Cole. Just to add a thick layer of delicious cream to that cake, the track has also been bestowed with the prestigious title of Track Of The Day on Friday's show, which means it'll be available for free download from this [...]

What level of ego is sufficiently necessary to distinguish our individuality - how much is too much? Societal mores teach us that we should put others ahead of ourselves, but for a myraid reasons, that proves to be an irrelevant task for those with an inflated sense of self. These are the special people the universe and our theme revolves around, the silly solipsistic amongst us. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was cursed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Luckily, not bound by spell, modern day narcissists freely decide to indulge in [...]

Autumn de Wilde Ask yourself, "what is the smoothest record I've heard this year?" Now if the answer is anything except The Bird & The Bee's new record Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future , then you simply haven't heard Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future . The sophomore effort from the duo of Inara George and Greg Kurstin is effortlessly stylish and slick, in the very best sense of the word, blending lounge, jazz, tropicalia and, most importantly, Bacharachian pop into a blend that's unabashedly [...]
