We all have musical guilty pleasures. Mine happens to be cover songs. Yes, there are some absolutely awful cover tracks out there. But, every once in a while there is a total gem. So kick back and enjoy some time with your covers. Billy Bragg - That's Entertainment (The Jam cover) Rock Plaza Central - SexyBack (Justin Timberlake cover) The Strokes - Mercy Mercy Me (Marvin Gaye cover) The Arcade Fire - Maps (Yeah [...]

Photo by Jalapeno, taken at South Street Seaport, New York City, 20 July 2007 Since I was impatient and already posted my Rock Plaza Central set from the last time they were in town, I thought I'd give you a bit of a taste of a bunch of different live RPC that I've collected from here [...]

Here's a hypothetical: say you're walking down the street, you look down, and laying there before you is a single glove. It's just there, discarded or forgotten. It's a nice glove. No, it's a hell of a nice glove: suede soft as a billowing cloud, stitching precise and ambrosial, tinted in the richest of browns. Touching it makes your fingerprints engorge with blood. Simply looking at it is costing you a week's salary. It's quite simply the most exquisite glove you've ever seen. But inside the glove is a severed hand. [...]

Photo by Frank Yang My snow boots make for truly lousy concert-going footwear. But the 30 cm of crap dumped on the city from Friday through Saturday night made then a necessity - thankfully, I had gotten my fill of club hopping the previous two nights and with the exception of one early stop, was planning on spending the whole evening camped out at the Palace of Lee. But first, a stop at one of the venues in town I'd never been to before - the Annex Wreckroom. I'd never graced the [...]
Chris Eaton of RPC at Barrymore's, 27 June 2007 (part of the Capital Idea! Festival) by Menomena. Those of you who have been reading my little site for a while may know that I am rather fond of Toronto's Rock Plaza Central, who I talked about here and posted a live set here. My 2007 [...]

I had another incident with my Infiniti and an animal, this one not as bad as last year's deer accident , although worse for my conscience since the animal in question this time probably had an owner. I will say that the chances of me avoiding contact with said animal in question after it leapt over the barrier on Route 1 - at that point a 6-lane highway - right in front of my car, were minimal at best. And my swerving into the center lane to avoid the animal could have caused a much more serious [...]

Kate Nash 's Made of Bricks is getting is U.S. release this week, after a year out in the UK in which she became quite a critical darling (and even got play on CBC Radio 3 in Canada). But even the USA Today gave her debut album a glowing review, so it leaves me to wonder whether it's as good as the first couple songs I've heard are. I don't know. Check out "Foundations" and let me know. Buy the album here . Download [...]

(CMJ marathon: Gowns; High Places; Jay Reatard; The Mall; Health; Mika Miko; Japanther; Double Dagger; Black Kids; The Apes; Art Goblin; Yeasayer; The Coathangers; Big A Little A) I am currently in St Louis checking up on the final phase of the Miss Rockaway Armada, and taking a break after CMJ . It was a bit tough to see a lot of the shows without a badge, but the real problem was just so many things overlapping. Regardless it was fun, and thanks to those friends who lent a hand getting me in [...]
Sometimes a song is so good, it doesn't need an explanation or a review. It just speaks for itself. "I want to be your shining example." Enjoy Buy / Download : How Shall I To Heaven Aspire?

Zookeeper - I Live in The Mess Your Are [highly rec'd!] Zookeeper - Tax Collector Chaos has overtaken not any physical space so much as my life, and my roommate / bff has had to put up with the mess the most. The phone rings, the hill-billy country takes over with jingles and jangles and a thumping baseline, accompanied by drums. "I live in the mess you are" has become something of an anthem for me lately: sharing someone's craziness is part of what makes sharing your life (or room) [...]

We had three members of the Toronto-based seven-piece, Rock Plaza Central , in for a MOKB SIRIUS Blog Radio / 91.7 WEEM session late last week. Chris, John and Jason played some really great, modified versions of four songs from their latest album Are We Not Horses . Are We Not Horses is available for just $9.99 at Yep Roc Records . I was a [...]

De Canadese band Rock Plaza Central heeft een conceptalbum gemaakt over robotpaarden die zich afvragen of ze échte paarden zijn. Are We Not Horses?
Whoop! The NFL season is upon us and that means it's time to oil up the ol' MOKB NFL Recap gears, cogs, nuts and bolts. I'm going to try to make it the whole season this year. I suffered some severe burnout around week 13 or 14 last season. I've hit the cream and the clear hard in the off-season, hired Drew Rosenhaus to rework my contract and am feeling pretty pumped. Well, we gotta get it all start off with the AFC South. The Colts ruled the division last year [...]

Ok, I actually got this album by accident (I was looking for Scotland Yard Gospel Choir) but I’m not upset because Are We Not Horses is pretty cool. If I’m not mistaken the album features the accordion, trumpet, mandolin and violin along with typical rock band instruments. I definitely hear some Will Oldham in this album, people say there are also Neutral Milk Hotel influences but those are harder to spot I think. The album is mixed in an interesting way so that I keep glancing over my shoulder and slipping off my headphones to see if some sounds are [...]

While I was visiting NYC this summer there was a show I had planned on attending. Bishop Allen was headlining while Rock Plaza Central was the opening act. In all honesty, I was more attracted to Rock Plaza Central partly because I had previously seen Bishop Allen but mostly due to their unique sound. Then I was offered free tickets to catch my beloved Yankees - missing the show to make my inaugural trip to Yankee Stadium. That experience lacks in music relativity, but my enjoyment of Rock Plaza Central steadily continues. Their latest [...]
Midwest Ho! The Pygmalion Music Festival is taking place this year from Sept. 19th - 22nd in Champaign-Urbana, IL. It will feature over 70 national and regional independent artists this year and will be headlined by Andrew Bird and Okkervill River. This is the Pygmalion Music Festival's 3rd year and will be the first year it's added a third day...a growing trend it seems. Pygmalion Pre-Parties: Thurs. Sept. 6th - KRANNERT ART MUSEUM - Poster Children w/ Headlights Fri. Sept. 7th [...]

I've prepared this little thing about a Canadian band for my return to blogging, so here we go. I've read about Rock Plaza Central in a forum recently, where someone mentioned it to be his album of the year. And this was in July! So of course I got curious and did a bit of research. I've found out that the band resides in Toronto, consists of 7 members and has already released three albums, the latest one - Are We Not Horses - in 2006. Apart from that, information about the band is rather scarce. [...]
