Following up on the As the Poets Affirm post from last weekend, I wanted to talk a bit about the headliner for the second day (this saturday) of MockingMusic Weekend Showcase : Rock Central Plaza . When a copy of their new album "Are We Not Horses" fell into my hands I didn't really know anything about Rock Central Plaza. Upon the first listen, I was confused (robot horses???Whaa???) but hooked nevertheless. It took a while to figure out what they are going on about (a post-apocalyptic future where robotic horses, who think they are real, [...]
Currently Digging Miss me? Sorry for the slow updates, I'll try harder this year. Rock Plaza Central Are We Not Horses According to their myspace page , [...]
Saw this one over at Brooklynvegan... if you haven't heard of Rock Central Plaza, they're a Toronto band that sounds kind of like the Fembots mixed with Mountain Goats and Bonnie Prince Billy. I like how their dark take on Justin Timberlake (seriously though, every top 40 song has an indie-band chomping at the bit to cover it) is combined with the actual video... it gives the clip quite a

Rock Plaza Central are, indeed, horses: gift horses for Ottawa's low wintertime touring band rate, hyuk hyuk. This week in Ottawa, maybe some snow will come. It would be handy to serve as a reminder that there is a reason not many bands are coming through town right now, as opposed to just feeling left alone. But it's not like things are all that desparate: Toronto band Rock Plaza Central play on Saturday as the nonlocal exception to a 2-night showcase of local music at Zaphod's, brought to you by [...]

Toronto, ON Honestly, I hadn't listened to Are We Not Horses from Rock Plaza Central all that much until a friend of mine declared it one of his favorites of 2006. It's a refreshing change for me and I suggest it for anyone who is a big fan of Magnolia Electric Co. "How Shall I To Heaven Aspire" Rock Plaza [...]
and too tired to talk about any of it. Um, here is a song... Rock Plaza Central - When we go, How we go .

If compiling my thirty favorite singles wasn't hard enough, culling a list of my thirty favorite songs proved near impossible. Every entry that was edged off the countdown was given a more drawn-out goodbye than an airport sendoff. With so many standouts in a crowded field, I had to make some very, very tough calls. But with that sonic surgery accomplished, I can happily say that these songs are the ones that have generously defined my year, soundtracked it and vastly improved it. Here are my picks: 30) [...]

Do we need another cover of SexyBack? Maybe we do. God, this song is getting all the cover attention it doesn't deserve. I mean, it's a good, not great song (though it does manage to get in your head for a while), but there are tons of better songs waiting to be covered out there, and this just seems to be the obvious ironic choice to go with. Anyway, this cover of the Canadian indie rock band 'Rock Central Plaza' is pretty interesting. It's different from those that I've posted before. Way different. Let's say there's a country-twang feel to [...]
Is it a bird? Is it an (In The) Aeroplane (over the Sea)? No sir. It?s the equine-stomp marchin? romp of Are We Not Horses? by Rock Plaza Central. Rock Plaza Central is the Toronto-based band, led by novelist/songwriter Chris Eaton. The album is a concept album about: ?Robotic horses who [...]
It'll be a year this January that I started writing for Mocking Music and, by extension, the Ottawa music scene, and so to celebrate I'll be hosting a huge weekend concert extravaganza at Zaphod Beeblebrox the weekend of January 12th and 13th . And because I'm such a nice guy, tickets for this event are being sold for the low, low price of $6 ! Night One - Friday, January 12th : Daiquiri w/Black Actors & Fucked Corpse Three of my favourite local bands come together on one bill for [...]

I have to give credit where credit is due. I first heard of Rock Plaza Central after reading Pitchfork's review and was intrigued. Had a hell of a time finding the album, but eventually tracked it down on Zunior.com , Canada's indie music download haven. At first I didn't know what to make of Are We Not Horses . Essentially its a concept album about mechanical horses that are programmed to believe that they are real horses. Uh, okay... Throughout the course of the album, the robot horses give up on trying to [...]

If your tastes drift towards traditional, organic sounds evoking a past time i can highly recommend the following 2 releases. Are We Not Horses - Rock Plaza Central is another Canadian release which promises greatness, evoking Neutral Milk Hotel with its use of brass and chris eaton's off-kilter voice, the band swells to produce a unique concoction. Head Home - O'death . I came to this release via the excellent Perm & the Skullet , this band hails from New York, but you would guess it was recorded on a mountain somewhere [...]

Before I begin this week's segment, I feel like I should note- if you've sent me an email asking me to check out your band already...I've read it, and there's a high percentage chance that you'll be featured on an upcoming edition of SIGN THIS BAND. So no, you don't need to re-send the email. Rest assured, I've gotten it, and bands will be featured in the order of emails received. Hang tight, for most of you it'll be a few weeks before I get to you. Just know that if I had the time, I'd make a post about [...]
So we are taking the week off here. There will be no more posts on WaterCoolerGossip until after Thanksgiving. To tide you over until then, here is a mix of bands/artists I think you should be paying attention to right now. These are mostly new tracks. Maybe there will be some informative posts when we return but for now one sentence explanations will have to do. Get them now because they will be gone when we return. Rock Plaza Central - "I Am An Excellent Steel Horse" I see a lone horse, standing in front a barn, picking his guitar and starting this song. As each instrument is introduced, their player walks slowly out of the barn and lines up beside the horse. Once everyone is there, the literally start dragging the barn across the field, into the sunny part, where the hayloft can get warm, and the mice and spiders can finally see each other. When they get there, the cymbals are already cheersing. I suppose work is the only good reason to celebrate. [order off [...]

Chance can be a wonderful thing and many times things work out for the best. At a music festival yesterday I decided to switch shows at the last minute to be able to stay outside in the sun. Luckily one of the acts that was going to perform inside, switched to outside and I was able to discover Rock Plaza Central in a stripped down form. RPC is built around the lyrics and vocals of Chris Eaton, who is originally from Sackville, New Brunswick, and he played solo on acoustic guitar at Sappyfest . "A Town at [...]
