This sink measures 33 by 27 by 7 inches. The kitchen sink. I could do this for another month and still barely scratch the surface of stuff I want to post. I won't though. Instead I'm going to throw a big ole pile of songs at you. All of this is stuff I love, and most of it is stuff I'd never get a chance to blog about normally. Just press play. AC Acoustics - I Messiah, Am Jailer [...]

While San Diego Satan-surf band Mrs. Magician continues to morph from an initially mysterious thrill into an illuminated, deceptively feel-good garage pop group, there has been apparently little activity on the release front since last Fall's There is No God 73 and this past Spring's The Spells 73 . While tripped-out music videos for "Get Bent" and "Tabloids" have randomly popped up in the past several months, their then-forthcoming debut full-length Pity Party Animal - though scheduled for release in June 2011 - never saw the [...]
San Diego rock band Rocket From The Crypt , active from 1989 to 2005, recently reunited for an episode of the Nickelodeon children's show Yo Gabba Gabba , for the upcoming season. The reunion included frontman John Reis, who has a recurring role on the show as The Swami, and drummer Atom Willard ( The Offspring , Social Distortion , Angels and Airwaves ). Unfortunately for fans, Reis posted on Facebook that the group is "only interested in playing to audiences of 5 to 10 people between the ages of 3 to 6" [...]
Nothing did more to further the cause of Alternative Nation-building than 120 Minutes, MTV's Sunday-night video showcase of non-mainstream acts. For nearly two decades, the program spanned musical eras from '80s college rock to '00s indie, with grunge, Britpop, punk, industrial, electronica and more in between. MAGNET raids the vaults to resurrect our 120 favorite [...]

in terms of debut records, me thinks there arent many more awesome than drive like jehu's 1991 self titled debut. from beginning to end, john reis, rick froberg and the rest of the gang set out to do one thing, kick your proverbial ass and it does on so many levels. its really a hot mess, but in the best sort of ways. it reminds me of a loud and obnoxious slanted and enchanted at least in the hot mess sort of way. influential? hell yeah it is. one listen to actually both of the drive like jehu [...]

Here is part 2 of 2 of Barryfest's report on the 2011 South By Southwest Festival. Part 1 can be found here: Barryfest at South By Southwest, Part 1: SXSW Is Decadent and Depraved . I'm generally not the kind of guy that notices, asks for, or even cares about American politics at rock shows. In fact, there was a time, somewhere between Rage Against the Machine’s second album Evil Empire and, not ironically, when Bono started begging George W. Bush for money on behalf of all 3rd World countries, that I wanted every [...]
If you have 6.5 minutes, you need to watch this. Well, let me revise that - watch the first minute or so to get some flavor, then skip to about 3:45 and watch to the end. Complete and utter spectacularity. I have to assume this is what a CHIRP dance would look like.

If you were into punk in the 19902s you may have heard of an all-girl 4 piece with the name The Red Aunts. As with most of those bands they disbanded after a few years, all going their seperate ways. One of the girls, Kerry Davis, however, kept going. She played alongside Mick Collins in The Screws and then in Beehive and the Barracudas with former members of Rocket From the Crypt and The Hot Snakes. Eventually she reinvented herself and is now recording under a new, raw garage-punk incarnation - The Two Tears. With Kerry on guitar [...]
Raise your hand if you like ska, punk, or ska-punk music? If you did, then the songs here are for you. It's just a little something to cheer you up as the temperature (especially here in Chicago) drops. Right now, all I want for Christmas is a Chicago Bears win over the New England Patriots today. Here are the links to Day 1 , Day 2 , Day 3 , Day 4 , Day 5 , Day 6 , Day 7 , and Day 8 of this series. [...]

In a lot of ways, I look at my youth . . . my days in high school, that is, as a very blessed time. Sure, I went through my various growing pains like any adolescent, but I was fortunate to have a soundtrack to accompany me through some of those tougher times. I was even more fortunate to have that soundtrack come from a home grown place. In the late 80’s/early 90’s, sleepy coast town San Diego was home to a vibrant, eclectic, and passionate group of musicians. It was a time when genre borders were crossed with nary [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Once upon a time, the radio disc jockey was king, a trusted voice floating across the airwaves to bring fresh sounds to eager ears. But the corporate takeover of radio reduced the once proud DJ to a meek voice introducing overplayed tracks between endless beer commercials. The emergence of online and satellite 'radio,' along with public and [...]

Punk Rock has suffered from a decline in quality, plain and simple. In an era were most bands main concern is merch and record sales and every band sounds derivative, its nice to see guys from the old guard came back and kick some namby pamby ass. OFF! features Keith Morris of Black flag/Circle Jerks, Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes Mario Rubalcaba, Dimitri Coats from Burning Brides and Steven MCdonald of Red Kross. The songs have an urgency and energy that is missing from most music today. These veterans are making angry music. While it is not groundbreaking or anything new, it is great [...]
"Hey Vince..." "Yeah, Kip?" "Remember when we saw Earthless open for Baroness and one nob in the whole place claimed to not like them for no apparent reason?" "Yes I do, and I will never understand that..." "Me neither. Thanks for the fictional yet accurate quotes." "My pleasure. You rule." After seeing the almighty California [...]
We're not huge punk-lovers here at Metalisbad but this certainly seems worthy of mention... The (anti?) super group OFF! is made up of Keith Morris (Circle Jerks, Black Flag) with Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), Dmitri Coats (Burning Brides) and Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes). Vice Records is putting out four EPs [...]
OFF! (members of Circle Jerks, Red Kross, Hot Snakes) in-store at Generation Records -10/22

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive , Television On Friday night's episode of ' Last Call With Carson Daly ,' hardcore throwback Off! will make late-night television history by performing their debut EP in its entirety. Granted, the intense four-song '1st EP' clocks in at just over four minutes but still, no other band has done it. This is the television debut for the group, which is fronted by [...]
Kurt Ballou is the guitarist for Converge and runs/is Godcity Recording Studio. In both of these capacities he has been a big part of making some of my favorite music ever. Screw the commonly used term “arguably” – Converge’s last record is their best/hardest record yet. And Kurt’s recording style presents live-sounding documents of aggressive [...]
