These youngsters from Perth have really stepped up on this release. "Awkward" is fun, dance-pop track full of boy-girl sexual tension and bright guitars. Drummer Scarlett Stevens makes her debut on vocals and it's a winner, yet distinct departure from their last hit, "Golden Revolver", which was a hazy, party pop tune we featured a year ago . The second preview from the Awkward EP , "Rocket Ship" , is the next hazy, party pop tune. Pretty good stuff from a band that was toiling away [...]

Official video for Blaze P's "Rocketship", taken off No Dress Rehearsal . Directed by Raf Moses iTunes: No Dress Rehearsal - Blaze P Boston, MA based emcee / producer Blaze P (@blazep23) has been garnering attention in the underground hip-hop circuit over the course of the last year and a half. The frequent Showoff Records collaborator has been the recipient of a growing buzz and much praise thanks to tracks such as; "Heaven Repair Us" featuring hardcore emcee REKS, [...]
I drug a few early Rocketship singles out of the archive this last week, I had forgotten how much I loved this incarnation of Dustin Reske's long running but reclusive pop project. The boy-girl vocals, humming Farfisa organs and vintage Association inspired bass tones bowled me over the first time I heard this first 7" from the tiny Bus Stop label in the early 90's. Later output, including the fantastic A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness LP on Slumberland, dipped into more shoegaze and Stereolab-inspired territory, but these early tracks have a vintage pop sound that [...]

transmittens From: Lawrence, Kansas, United States With a name like transmittens and tracks called Balloons in the Sky and Meet Me At The Swings it doesn't take a genius to guess that the Kansas based duo are a little bit twee. Their special brand of tinny-beated, moog-enhanced light and airy pocket pop wouldn't sound out of place on a Sarah Records retrospective or a Slumberland [...]

Your new boyfriend - Rocketship Perfect, from the bass intro to the vibrato organ entering and overbearing everything, to the backing oohs of the chorus, made with the most perfect of mouth forms and pushed through with the most perfect of effort and intent. Repetition of love, of relationship, showcased in a song just as repetitive and derivative of pop tradition. The same things done, the same things done perhaps better. Claiming originality, accusing a crime, appealing yours, is an act of futility. It [...]

I love you like the way i used to do - Rocketship Like with Break Down The Walls and a drum kit, hand me a guitar and i'll automatically play the opening to this song. This, or Our Love Is Heavenly by Heavenly. Unlike the drums (or like the drums, but more so), i am so terrible at guitar that it is not so much a test pattern as it is playing something simple that sounds good. And it does [...]

It wouldn't be hyperbolic to say we've had some shakeups at the Girlpants offices. When I say offices, I mean offices: we had some pretty nice ones, but we lost them in an ill-considered card game that big time hustlers Joel and Mike initiated against a rival blogful of poker-shark web journalists. Then several hard, unmusical years passed, and we could nary afford a seven-inch as we lived on oatmeal packets, the paltry nickels from our freelance stump grinding, and whatever Ben could scare up spanging by the highway on-ramp with his "Opinions: 25 Cents" sign. But our hard work [...]

Friendships and love - Rocketship To offer another example of the kind of closing song i was talking about yesterday. This might be the most heartbreaking and arresting of them all. These are the songs that you sit with long after they've played through. They are the last songs. You don't reach for the next record, you don't get up and move on to something else - it affects you, it keeps with you, turning still in your head with all compulsive reflection and [...]

Venerable indie pop label Slumberland Records marks its 20th anniversary with special shows in Washington, D.C. Friday night and Brooklyn Saturday night. Full details and links to tickets can be accessed right here . We recall early on in the buzz for these events discussion of secret guests or special guests or some such, but looking at those line-ups, well we think it would be hard to do better than early Slumberland stalwarts The Ropers and Lorelei , who are already slated to play. The latter band, in particular, is near and dear for us, because [...]

![Review: The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart | Self-titled [MP3s]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1452859_lg.jpg)
In our estimation the classic Slumberland sound is a product of just the right proportions of melody and distortion, dreampop and shoegaze. Certainly, there are exceptions and outliers: the first period of work from the amazing, phenomenal, superlative (and so forth) act Rocketship hardly relied on distortion at all, while in places on its self-titled EP Henry's Dress buries melody almost completely under a narcotic, face-melting sonic (c)rumble. As we stated previously here, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart 's music bears the hallmarks of the classic Slumberland sound, and so it [...]

Until yesterday when I stumbled upon their deserted MySpace page by chance, I had never heard of Japan's Cyclon86 . An amazing band by any pop-loving boy/girl's standards, Cyclon86 work jangling guitars, buzzing organs and synths, and super sweet vocals together is a way that just makes me want to scream "perfect!". It sounds somewhere between Rocketship and Stereolab to me, but head over to the MySpace page and listen for yourself. Being that their website is almost 100% in Japanese, I'm having a tough time learning too much about them or where I can find [...]

Ég minntist um daginn á Slumberland Records, en sú ágæta útgáfa gefur brátt út smáskífu og breiðskífu The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Eitthvað hlýtur þá að vera varið í útgáfuna, og ekki sakar að slagorð þeirra er "Keeping it foolish since 1989". Ykkur til hægðarauka fylgir hér texti af vefsíður þeirra, og svo glás af MP3: Slumberland began operations in 1989 as a collective effort consisting of members of DC area bands Velocity Girl, Big Jesus Trash Can/Whorl, Black Tambourine and Powderburns. We were inspired by such musical happenings as C-86, early [...]
