[Another installment of the new L.A. sounds series ...] L.A. five-piece Vanaprasta is working on its debut album, "Healthy Geometry," and what I've heard so far points to a familiar but welcome take on 1990s indie rock — gnarly guitar interplay from Collin Desha and Cameron Dmytryk, arresting rhythms courtesy of Taylor Brown and Ben Smiley, tastefully done atmospherics and a vocalist, Stephen Wilkin, who can really deliver the goods. No firm release plans yet, but the quintet has a busy April show-wise. [...]

i've never really been a fan of space. not keen on red dwarf, and the closest i ever came to star wars or star trek was being forced to play princess leia during countless 'wet playtimes' at infant school. if they let us outside i would head straight for the fence...anyway, i have no idea which one princess leia originates from and i don't care. i liked pigs in space though. and button moon rocked 'home lunchtimes' once a week, with its blatant product placement for heinz and fairy liquid. you would have thought they could have stumped up a couple of [...]

The sole release by the band that would become Crazy Horse . While it may be a bit unfocused, there's a lot of stellar, inventive material here. Lead vocalist Danny Whitten and guitarist Leon Whitshell each wrote about half of the songs. Traces of embryonic country-rock can be heard, but they mostly cling to a tougher blues-rock sound with interesting psych touches. If anything, it certainly earns originality points for Bobby Notkoff's innovative use of the electric violin, which ranges from traditional country breakdowns ("Hands in my Pocket") to some intense bow-slashing that sounds something like a steel-shed being [...]

Trying to help make the start of your week a little easier: Sunnpimp Everyone needs a track like this to start their Monday mornings. Dave swears this isn't the Polyphonic Spree (Editor's Note: Barring some unforeseen circumstances before next week, this marks the last Summer Songs post for 2007 and we're going to end with a spectacular flourish courtesy music writer Dave Tompkins, one of my most favoritest people in the world. Look for his upcoming book on the history of the Vocoder . For those too lazy to read, Dave says "Overlord Ice Dog is going to recite the whole book in Auto-Tune." --O.W.) CONTINUE READING... [...]

The FTP issues are now sorted so onwards with the blogging. After Tony Wilson passed away on Friday night I think it's important to mention Rob Gretton too. Hannett has had plenty of press regarding who he was and what he could do behind the desk but Gretton tends to play a less well known role to the average music lover compared to Wilson and the prodigiously talented producer. Gretton, in a bid to save his own job as Joy Division's manager actually thought up the idea of staying fully independent because there was no way [...]

rockets - space rock (mp3) top, top track from the bizarre alien esque french rockers, the rockets. taking their influences from disco, prog, rock and space/alien mystique, these guys were, how shall i put this, a bit mental. after changing their names more times than necessary, these guys settled on the rockets moniker after previously being called rocket men, rocketeers and crystal...
