Live music picks for TUESDAY MAY 15 through SATURDAY MAY 19, 2012. TUESDAY MAY 15 / PS I LOVE YOU / THE GARRISON / 1197 DUNDAS W / $10.50 / 19+ This is as polarizing a band as you're ever going to find, and on a personal level, I'm not even entirely sure what I think of them. On the one hand, PS I Love You is made up of two clearly talented musicians. And they're from Kingston, which is only a stone's throw away from Toronto, so [...]

May 5: ► Hard to imagine there is a more Angeleno way to observe today's "holiday" than with L.A. icons Los Lobos . They headline Cinco de Mayo Festival at the Greek Theatre, joined by Neko Case, Alejandro Escovedo and Flaco Jimenez, with guests X and Mariachi El Bronx opening. Doors open at 3 p.m., with three local bands performing on the plaza outside the Greek: La Santa Cecelia, Ollin and 44s with Kid Ramos. ► Seattle folk singer Rocky Votolato headlines the Troubadour behind his fine new [...]
With such a copacetic approach to music-making, it's unlikely that Votolato will be doing anything but preaching to the converted for quite some time. Rocky Votolato grew up in rural Frost, Texas, the son of a member of local motorcycle gang the Scorpions. Though he grew up on a steady diet of country music, his mother moved the family to Seattle in Votolato's early teens, and he began playing in various punk and indie groups before forming the Fugazi-indebted Waxwing with his younger brother Cody (also of erstwhile spazz-rockers the Blood Brothers). While Waxwing was still active, Rocky [...]

Rocky Votolato - Little Spring

Spring has its own special brand of fidgetiness. I start to feel slowly like there are little invisible crawly things on my skin, in a picnic sort of way, and I get all these ideas about exploring and adventures. Combine that with the calescent glow of things warming up all around us, and I spend a noticeably increased amount of time staring out the window lost in daydreams. As with any other season for the last few years, I've stitched up a soundtrack of twenty songs that are compelling me in these days, wafting out my opened windows [...]

Rocky Votolato – Television of Saints | CD Vinyl MP3 It's no secret that I'm a fan of Rocky Votolato. Makers made my list of favorite albums of 2006. And I've written short story reviews of that album and 2007's...

The Graboid is back and here we are once again with the week's new album releases. Still getting back into the swing of things so I haven't listened to many of these in their entirety, but I have sampled each of these and a couple I would recommend include Bear in Heaven's I Love You, It's Cool , Great Lake Swimmers' New Wild Everywhere , and Raven & Chimes' Holiday Life . - The Graboid is an on-going weekly feature here at The Yellow Stereo since its [...]
Another singer-songwriter comes out with a release you never saw coming.

Can you be believe the wait is finally over? We've been playing the Icelandic release of My Head Is an Animal , the debut from Of Monsters and Men , since we last visited them in October, but today the U.S. release hits record store shelves across the country. And while you may think you've already heard every song on the album, think again: the domestic release features two new songs and new album art. Well, what are you waiting for? We'll be here when you get back... but hold on... there's much more awaiting for [...]
Here are a few MP3s of songs from some of the better albums released this week: Hollis Brown – "Gypsy Black Cat" and "Ride on the Train" from Nothing & The Famous No One [EP] MxPx – "Far Away" from...

Ward , Chromatics , Bear in Heaven y el LP en vivo de The Chemical Brothers . También compartimos flamantes lanzamientos discográficos de Daniel Rossen ( Grizzly Bear ), Rocky Votolato [...]

Rocky Votolato does simple well. He proved it since his breakthrough Barsuk-released album in 2006 with Makers, and he's working with the format again on his ultra-lean new album, Television of Saints. The album marks the first time Votolato's been without a label since he joined with Barsuk, with the 10-track, 33-minute album receiving funds by the way of Kickstarter donations to the singer. The album was funded Dec. 15, and to date Votolato has received $38,225 for the album from backers. While Votolato's Television of Saints won't be out until April 3, you can stream the [...]
Sixe years after breaking through with his acclaimed '06 debut Makers , Seattle's Rocky Votolato returns with his fourth album of unpretentious, tuneful folk/pop on the fan-funded, self-released Television of Saints (April 3). Votolato called upon long time friend and producer Casey Foubert ( Sufjan Stevens) and some accomplished player support -- including his brothers Sonny (Slender Means) and Cody (The Blood Brothers, Telekinesis) -- for an assured celebration [...]

I like to think that I do a pretty good job on keeping up with all the doings and moving that occur in the work of music, but no one is perfect and even I'm prone to letting a few slip through the cracks. With that said you can imagine my joy and excitement when I learned that Striker Bill favorite Rocky Votolato was prepping the release of a new LP, and my personal frustration in not knowing about it sooner. Like so many artists right now, Votolato utilized Kickstarter in order to make his newest effort a [...]
