Though it's only been a year since he released his last fine record ( Makers ), Rocky Votolato is already back with a brand new full-length, the brag & cuss , that Barsuk will be putting out on June 19th. They recently made a track from that record, "Postcard from Kentucky", available for free download. Upon first listen, it doesn't grab me as strongly as either "White Daisy Passing" or "Portland is Leaving" , but it still has [...]

My wife and I have been big Rocky Votolato fans from the first time we saw him perform at Chicago's Fireside Bowl back in 2003 when we were instantly drawn to his earnest working-class brand of country-tinged acoustic rock. Now about to release his fifth solo album , The Brag & Cuss , Votolato has (if anything) added a little more twang what was already a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. Now recently Dodge from My Old Kentucky Blog referred to Votolato's music as "Whiskeytown light" and "diet [...]
The slow, Americana, Rocky Votolato shuffle returns on June 19th with The Brag and Cuss. Votolato has a gift for the understatement, sometimes adding in a harmonica or the brush of a drum alongside his acoustic guitar. It's the perfect...
Each weekday, My Morning Download introduces you to some of the coolest new music on the web. We clear through the noise so you don't have to. Meet Rocky Votolato Seattle singer-songwriter Rocky Votolato is best known for his emotionally intense, acoustic based songs. His new album The Brag And The Cuss will be released on June 19th on Barsuk Records. It's his fifth and finest record to date on

Traditional folk songwriters have always played a large role in the life of Rocky Votolato . The Texas-based singer/songwriter has long admired highly influential artists in the vein of Springsteen, Willie Nelson, and Steve Earle, with the story of Votolato's early childhood sounding much like the lyrics to an Earle song in itself. Growing up on a barren fifty-acre farm in rural Texas, Votolato's father was a member of one of the country's fiercest motorcycle gangs - the Scorpions. After living the traditional lifestyle of a farmhand for the first few years of his life, Votolato's mother moved the [...]

I want to like Rocky Votolato . I mean, I do, but I think I just want more from him. I think he's a great songwriter, I like that he isn't overly heart-on-the-sleeve. My issue is, I really was looking forward to 2006 album, Makers , but I ended up a little disappointed as I felt it only really had a few great songs on it. Anyone should be happy with the fact that they wrote and recorded a few great songs, but felt like [...]

"The Wrong Side Of Reno" Votolato has become a master at the rootsy blue-folk from the days of old. The Brag & Cuss , his follow up to last years excellent Makers , makes no attempt to fix what ain't broke. It offers up the same brand of down-trodden, country tinged, self-deprecating sweetness you'd expect from a farm raised Texan (Now that I think about it, most of the people I know from Texas are the opposite of self-deprecating, but whatever). "I [...]
MP3: ROCKY VOTOLATO "Postcard from Kentucky" ( Barsuk ) From his upcoming release The Brag and Cuss , singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato succeeds once again at creating the perfect soundtrack for drunken depression around the campfire. Let me start by saying this: I've never been more than a casual fan of Rocky Votolato , so when the alt.country/pop troubadour's new record arrived today from Barsuk I went in with "meh" expectations. I would like to say next that I was completely wrong in my pre-conceived notions of the pacific north westerner's brand of country tinged pop. Where Makers got a little less Tupelo and a little more top 40 strum-along and alienated some people (like me), this one, The Brag & Cuss , is a bottle-in-hand, chain [...]

Barsuk artist Rocky Votolato consistently flies under the radar. Despite the fact Makers was (yet another) a terrific album and one he made great strides as an artist, he still gets little to no attention from the bloggers or, at times, his label. His new record, The Bragg & Cuss , is out on Barsuk on June 19th and there's been almost no mention of it anywhere. Even after one listen, you are hit by the obvious change of style for Rocky. The songs on this record are much more country tinged, and step [...]

The Broken West Play Spaceland Tonight This is one of those crappy nights in LA when there's too much to choose from. Four great choices...I'll be going to the Silverlake Lounge, but I'd be perfectly happy at the other recommended shows. Tivo Alert: Silversun Pickups on Jimmy Kimmel Tonight's [...]

Kurtis Blow – Basketball One of the bookshelves in my bedroom is dedicated to the New Jersey Nets. It's a remnant of my middle school years, when I was proud to be the only Nets fan in Westport to enjoy their rise from perennial losers to kings of the tri-state area. Six years later, being the best NBA team in New York/New Jersey/CT about as exciting a distinction as being the best Rec Intramural team in Fisher/Ware/Riepe (a title the Delicious Corn [...]

I love making Mix-Tapes, or more appropriately, Mix-CD's. I made quite a few last year, and feel they are a good way of recapping last year's goings on in the blogs, (since that's how most of the tracks came to my attention). Below you'll see 12 out of the 20 tracks that were on the first one I made. It starts with the voice of Colin Roberts, former editor of Drowned in Sound . The mix-tape is fairly subdued and peaceful, although No Scrubs is great for novelty's sake, and each track stands up on its own two feet. [...]

In an attempt to both educate ourselves as well as some readers, we are going to start profiling labels that have helped mold the indie music scene into what it is today. We hope you find something interesting out of it. Our first label is Barsuk Records (pronounced: BAR-SOOK) and here are some of the basics: Created in 1994 by members of the band This Busy Monste r Calls Seattle, Washington home Named after their dog, who is also the basis for [...]

Between his former Waxwing duties and his current solo career, Seattle singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato has been releasing a steady stream of records since the late 1990s. Last year's Makers was both a fifth and a first for the musician; it was his fifth overall record and his first for hometown label Barsuk . The album was also his most successful to date- it spawned the powerful, O.C. approved single 'White Daisy Passing'- but, if we may expose our bias, we still have a secret preference for [...]
