We've mentioned before our love of Bright Light, Bright Light and indeed we've had Rod down to the club to DJ twice before. But this (aside from the two DJ sets at our club of course) is his finest moment to date. A Disco Moment. Ingredients for a Disco Moment: -Take one Robyn -Dance On Your Own for a bit -Marinade in sadness -Add a dash of euphoria -Mix with tears -But serve warm-hearted Enjoy your serving, for this is [...]

A New Word To Say is the new single from Bright Light Bright Light , aka Rod Thomas and supporting players. Produced with Neon Neon's Boom Bip, it's a slice of unashamedly sincere electro-pop, full of breathless rhythms, nice vocal hooks and a real reach-for-the-lasers chorus. Where I find BLBL's previous numbers occasionally smacking of simplicity, this latest effort is much more artful - epitomised by the nice jangly melody thrown in amid the final skirmishes, and by the layered vocals that accompany it. In the end, it's a tune that gives you two distinct options: sing along, or have a shit time. Bright Light Bright Light is playing The [...]

Escuchen y [...]
Through stormy of the glitz and glamour that is the current whirlwind of instant fame. The hardworking and in-it-for-the-love-it one man bands are being left to dry out, forgotten about on the roadside. However, once in a while a reminder is served, showing up the now norm contrasting ability of someone like Londoner Rod Thomas. [...]

I don't think the artist named himself after photic sneeze reflex , but it might be taken from a famous quote from the movie Gremlins . Bright Light Bright Light is Welsh songwriter, producer, remixer and multi-instrumentalist Rod Thomas who, over the last year or so has moved swiftly from bedroom producing to appearing at Glastonbury, Latitude, Camp Bestival, Green Man, Innocent Village Fete and Summer Sundae festivals. Interestingly enough, I was just contacted By Rod Thomas after I posted his remix of [...]

[Rod Thomas] [Rod Thomas] Ever since I talked about this then-busker from London two years ago, I've been hoping to catch Rod Thomas do his one man wonder sometime during this South By. Little did I know that I would find this opportunity at the Hilton lobby. Oddly enough, the large, grand lobby of this hotel made for a decent stage, and the constant hustle through the room only brought Rod to more people's attention as he literally stopped people in their [...]

With the festival season looming, its time to scan the line up's and make a decision on where you'll be heading if you haven't already. As always, my heart lies with Bestival and if you're contemplating it too then how about I give you an example of an artist playing that should be high on your must watch list. James Yuill released his brilliant debut album 'Turning Down Water For Air' through Moshi Moshi last October, if you don't own it yet, I suggest you hook yourself up with a copy, here . Packed [...]

The People to Get Excited About if You're Going to SXSW But Would Like Anyway Even if You Weren't Going Mix You're probably wondering what the hell all those letters mean. Kicking off my South By Southwest coverage this year is a massive mix for a massive fest. There's been quite a bit of material I could have covered before the fest officially goes down, and the operative phrase there is "could have." Undoubtedly, it's a gargantuan amount, and the time I've had lately has been minuscule...and I've been lazy. When situations [...]

To those who are attending SXSW '09: Oh, you lucky bastards. I will never get see such a large-scale music event being held in Singapore, not in my lifetime anyway. Unless our local music scene evolves at a crazy speed, and the government decides to spend tonnes of money bringing in talented musicians from overseas and we reclaim more land and convert our void decks, rooftops and public parks into spanking new music venues... ...otherwise I should just save up to visit Austin, Texas. But I digress. So I checked [...]

An SXSW performer, playing March 18, 20 and 21, who I unfortunately left out of my mini-series: Rod Thomas , singer/songwriter out of the UK, not to be confused with Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20. His songs all sound pretty similar to each other, but nothing wrong with that when that sound is awesome! On his recently released (March 2) mini-album, Until Something Fits , he blends some folk with the overriding pop to create a bunch of little gems. Catchy stuff for sure, appealing to both the ultimate hipsters and mainstreamers alike. Which is, obviously, [...]

Thanks to Indiecater. The Very Most - The Only Pretty Ring Time (Rod Thomas 4 Seasons Remix)

Again I feel the need to apologize for not updating in so long, but as a Christmas-treat there are two updates today and maybe another one tomorrow with a review of Ben Kweller in Cologne. (no promises though...) Well, I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and provide you with a few more christmas songs (I know, that's a bit late, but you can still use them for next year): [mp3] Rod Thomas [...]

Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman. ~ Ludwig van Beethoven ~ What is the essence of adept or good music? Is it the mere ability to catch people's attention or has it had to do with the virtuoso style of creating the songs which somehow makes it unique from other pieces? +/- I couldn't answer that. In some ways, music has its own relativity. For almost 500 posts here in Play which 6 months later [...]
Instead of just posting Band Aid or something, I got sent a cover of 'Winter Wonderland' by James Yuille with Rod Thomas on the backing vocals! Sorry it's posted so close to Christmas but I simply havn't had the time to be blogging away! Anyway, have a brilliant Christmas everyone! Winter Wonderland - James Yuill Feat Rod Thomas
