During my freshman year of college, I was constantly strapped for cash. It wasn't like I was poor—money had been set aside for my first semester that was to be used for food and books—but my mother made the mistake of telling me that I could spend whatever money I had left over at the [...]
![[The Past Presents] Post-Rock Revisited, Part 1: Rodan – "Rusty"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3467654_lg.jpg)
The Past Presents revisits revered albums from the past 20-25 years to ask the question, "Is this album still a classic, or has it lost its edge over the years?". Was it a great record for that particular time and place, or is it something we'll be passing on to our kids? It also looks at the "lost classics" – countless albums that should have earned more attention but for one reason or another fell through the cracks. The first half of the 1990s was undeniably a high point in [...]

My man Jeff Mueller has had three seminal bands that were/are all vastly unappreciated: Rodan, June of 44, and the still-active Shipping News. Each of these groups had their own individual sound, but in a way one can trace the evolution of common member Mueller from one to the next. Save Everything, Shipping News' excellent [...]

afternoon! well, this is a bit of a surprise! a good surprise at that, but still a surprise. louisville's shipping news is putting out a new record this novemeber 16 called one less heartless to fear which features 7 new tracks and two older tracks recorded live. for the uninitiated, shipping news and their various offshoots and relations which include rodan, slint, the four carnation, june of 44, etc are pretty much responsible for the whole math rock, post punk explosion that happened in the 902s and continues today. me thinks you would be hard press to find [...]

of course they can also be prone to pretentiousness and a general air of self-importance, but sometimes you need that in a band, you know? ::: godspeed you! black emperor - storm ::: ganger - cats, dogs and babies jaws ::: maserati - 12 16 ::: rodan - tooth fairy retribution manifesto ::: dianogah - eating cake ::: god is an astronaut - radau ::: the mercury program - over this land ::: shipping news - the march song ::: emery reel - his hammer is my axe ::: set fire to flames - steal compass / drive [...]
Varsity Drag 's fiery Friday night headlining set at PA's Lounge was notable for a number of reasons. First, the Cambridge, Mass.-based indie punk stalwarts have maintained the edge to their live show that brought back from their fall UK tour. Second, the band has apparently fully integrated charming cellist Aliah Rosenthal into its stage show, adding a surprising new dimension to songs we'd never heard him play on. And for fans afraid that the addition of electric cello can only portend ill, un-rocking things for Varsity Drag : fear not. Mr. Rosenthal most certainly rocks. It [...]

Rodan, Gastr [...]
Sorry, I'm too busy watching Ichi The Killer with Nate and Nicci to post some kind of witty introduction to this week's mix tape. Better luck next time! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week's [...]

Celebrate fall and it's darkness at the monthly takeover of 'Rumble Lounge' at Rodan, Chicago, where minimal, subtle and moody sides of dubstep and techno and the increasing overlap between the two are explored. A night for casual listeners, aficionados, and the curious alike to enjoy a relaxing environment and appreciate the texture in the more subdued stylings of dubstep, dub-techno, uk funky, minimal house and techno with DJs Olin and akademy . Last month was fantastic, this month should be even better. Nuff said. Peep aKademy's mix below for an array of deep dub step/future dub/deep [...]
Okay so I'm a little jealous of Axl and Vince manning up and scalping CL tix to go see the always-magnificent TOOL play later today in smelly Jersey.....fumes/Aquanet/festi val crowds aside, that shiz is clearly gonna rip. And in reminiscing back to when that particular band started, I can't help but think about some other under-the-radar groups [...]

A Weird and twisted tale from San Francisco Telegraph Hill He was a tough, fat, bald guy—a character right out of Hollywood central casting. Back in the early 1950's an itinerant San Francisco journalist, former OSS operative and then Federal Bureau of Narcotics agent named George Hunter White, aka Morgan Hall, was assigned by his boss Harry Anslinger to team up with the CIA. Together they created Operation Midnight Climax. White's assignment: explore and record how a new drug called LSD affects behavior when consumed by unsuspecting male johns in the company of drug addicted [...]

Sigh/ Dies Irae-The Master Malice Goatsnake/ Easy Greasy Rodan/ Sangre Sunn O)))/ It Took the Night To Believe Dinosaur Jr/ I Want You To Know Wavves/ Beach Demon DIAL/ Always At The Border Torche/ Grenades Thrones/ Ephraim Black Flag/ Wound Up Isis/ 20 Minutes-40 Years to be enjoyed as a playlist…in prescribed order… [...]

There's something about Louisville that produces adventurous female songwriters who completely eschew traditional (i.e. bland) folk leanings for massive, beautiful soundscapes and experimental song structures. Perhaps it's the high grade weed that passes through here, who knows. Last week, you were introduced to the graceful Cheyenne Mize, who collaborated with Will Oldham on his Among the Gold EP. I suppose you could classify her and other similar artists as part of the New Weird America camp. But Tara Jane O'Neil , who recently relocated to Portland, is not new and not easy to pinpoint. She's a longstanding [...]

sup peoples? so, on sunday i am leaving for herndon, va for a week - which i hope will lead to a shitload of posting cause i am going to have a lot of solo hotel time to myself. i used to be a huge fan of june of '44 and here they are playing on 6.27.95 @ butchertown pub in louisville. its a super nice recording, although the vocals are buried for the most part. june of 44 were never really about the vocal anyway, in my opinion. dont know who june of 44 is? read the [...]

2007 2008 Edition Hey, SXSW starts today. Maybe that's why it feels like the entire blog-o-sphere is dead. In any event, this is the perfect time to revisit a top-ten list from last year that I dedicated to the massively-corporate-sponsored "indie" music festival. Without further ado, the first "repost" in the history of this website. Hey, it had to happen eventually... There's no shame in coming to terms with one's nerd-ish tendencies. For example, I like to catch up on what's happening in the music world, so I read a lot of music [...]
