Until just recently I had decided that I was now too old to go to music festivals, the thought of waking up in a tent just really didn't appeal to me anymore. In short I was starting to think along the same lines as this grumpy old sod . However, when Randolph's Leap offered me one of their 'plus ones' for this years Wickerman Festival, I found myself changing my mind somewhat. I used to be the kind of person who looked to see who the headliners would be, this time round though I found myself looking at the [...]
Roddy Woomble has changed a great deal since the early days of Idlewild. Having watched one of the band's final pre-hiatus shows back in May 2010, there was a real sense that the band were reaching backwards to find their heavier moments: a melancholy had descended, and the anger of the 100 Broken Windows / Hope Is Important era seemed to be rocking on its last legs. What emerged from the wreckage is perhaps a better representation of Roddy's true character. The man who was once a symbol of Scottish rock music now resides on a [...]

He might start with the lyric "Abandon your traditions/watch them disappear one by one" but on his third solo effort, The Impossible Song & Other Songs , Idlewild front man Roderick 'Roddy' Woomble walks a familiar path, albeit with brand new shoes. The Impossible Song & Other Songs For those of you new to fourforty4, the idea of InReview is for the writer to listen to a record, make his/her notes, and then put his thoughts on the record to its creator, giving the reader [...]

Richard Dumas A number of words serve as accurate descriptors of Nottingham's Tindersticks - "smoky", "noirish", "soulful" all work - but if you had to narrow it down to just one, then "cinematic" would be as good as any. Their ability to create, define and enhance an atmosphere or mood makes them an ideal choice to provide the sounds to moving pictures, and for French director Claire Denis , that's what they've done. Tindersticks, either as a group or as individuals, have scored six of Denis' films and now those soundtracks have been [...]

Sparrow and the Workshop recorded one of our first ever Toad Sessions. In fact, they were the first band I ever recorded all on my lonesome and, after a few rather panicked emails to my little brother who knows about this shit, it all seemed to go pretty well. So, not content with merely asking Meursault to join them on their next tour of England, they upped the level of niceness by offering to come round the house and record a sort of album preview podcast for their next record. Spitting Daggers comes out in a [...]

Roddy Woomble 's second album The Impossible Song & Other Songs was recorded at An Tobar, a local art gallery/cafe/performance space in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. From this piece of information, you can more or less figure Woomble out. The former front man of Idlewild has stuck to his Scottish roots – after stints of living in London, Edinburgh and New York the singer relocated to the Western Isles and enjoys walking (even writing a magazine column entitled 'Woomble's Way' about his rambles) and exploring Scotland's countryside. With the day job on indefinite hiatus, it'd be lamentable were the Scotch-stained brogue of Idlewild mouthpiece Roddy Woomble concealed by uncertain lull. The Impossible Song & Other Songs, Woomble's second solo outing, devoid of tracks insinuating the trials and tribulations linked with its conception is as easy a listen as they come, a collaborative effort effectively documenting six months in an Hebridean arts centre that's as quintessentially Celtic as the crisp wind breezing gayly beneath emerald kilt blustering atop glen ridge. Woomble's songwriting capacity has been honed, finely attuned to melodramatic indie whipped up by tumbledown strings [...]

We have had a few technical issues with the Scotland on Tour database recently but that has now been resolved and a quick glance shows that Teenage Fanclub, Fangs, The Cinematics, Fran Healy and Isobel Campbell all have gigs abroad this week. Another smooth-sailing but softer effort from these veteran Scottish rockers.

Scotlands very own Three Wise Men will play Oran Mor on the 16th of December, so that's another gig in the lead up to Christmas, it's going to be one hell of an expensive month by the looks of things. For all of you (myself included) who missed out on tickets for The Twilight Sad at Sleazys this might be the next best option for a night on the tiles. Tickets for this one are a whopping £15 + bf, but then again I suppose you can't grumble too much, Jnr Woombles don't come cheap you know. Buy them [...]
