The second round of artists have been announced for Wakarusa 2012. Joining Pretty Lights on the headliner slot will be Primus as they're gearing up for tons of dates still supporting their last effort, Green Naugahyde, and Umphrey's McGee, Girl Talk, Big Gigantic and more have all been added as support. This will be a [...]

***My first several posts here don't have time and date stamps on them for some reason... but I'm pretty sure that today (or possibly yesterday... sometime this week for sure) is the one year anniversary of A Fifty Cent Lighter & A Whiskey Buzz . Now that we're 150+ posts and nearly 55,000 visitors into this thing, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has stopped by, commented, and (most importantly) enjoyed the music over the past year. Hopefully, a lot of you have found something new here that you have then gone out and purchased for [...]
Somewhere near the crossroads of the sun, the sea, the dust and a fiercely guarded isolation is the essence of this tiny Seri village on the Sonoran coast of Mexico.Desemboque is a wild study in contradictions, both rich and subtle, starting with its thudding juxtapositon of desert and sea. As well as I know and love the Sonoran Desert, it seemed inconcievable to stand on the edge of a low-tide

We're in Cleveland. It is the NBA playoffs. I'm writing this before game two, which pits our Cavaliers against the reprehensible and asinine Orlando Magic. (If there was any justice in the world, somebody would punch Dwight Howard in the mouth. I'm tired of that dude's "charisma.") My Pops and I are scalping tickets to get in the door tonight and I'm in full pre-sporting event tune mode. For me, to a large degree, that means old-school hardcore punk and rap music. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but Fugazi and Jay-Z get me in the mood for playoff hoop. I'm feeling [...]

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers (RCPM) rode into the Thunderbird Cafe Wednesday night with guitars blazing and a brand of southwest-flavored rock that rarely passes through Pittsburgh. RCPM had been on my lengthy list of "bands to check out" for a couple of years. I'd read rave reviews of their 2004 release, ¡Americano! , and RCPM fans who I'd spoken with had been adamant that Clyne and Co. put on a show unlike any other (a frequent claim that proved to be right on the dinero). But most intriguing for me was that Clyne and drummer P.H. Naffah's [...]
1. Iron & Wine - Jesus The Mexican Boy - Tour EPThis CDR was the only recorded music available at the start of Iron & Wine's 2002 tour and featured demos not included on the debut Sub Pop album The Creek Drank The Cradle, which came out that fall. Three songs later found their way onto The Sea & Rhythm EP, while two more were re-recorded for the joint Calexico album. This is a fantastic song, as
It's the first day of spring, the 'Cats are playing in their 25th consecutive NCAA tournament today, and it feels like the perfect day to just kick back and enjoy life. And here's a perfect song for just that: Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers - Easy (live)
1. East River Pipe - Axl Or Iggy - Shining Hours In A CanI think I came to this album about 10 years late, but it fight right in with that Flaming Lips/Modest Mouse/Wilco surge I was on. This song is on my Time & Space Lounge mix, right in between Clem Snide and Low. Great shimmering indie rock guitars, and it opens one of the best lines I've ever heard: "You thought you were Axl, or Iggy, but
I didn't read through the lengthy Obamicon.Me terms and conditions, but I doubt you're supposed to use it for classic album covers... but c'mon, what else is a music blogger to do? Here are some favorites: Any other great Obamicon album covers? DOWNLOAD: Bob Dylan - Let Me Die In My Footsteps (outtake) Bruce Springsteen - Rosalita (live 1974) Nirvana - Lithium (live) Ween - Spinal
At the Calexico show a couple weeks ago, the band threw a few lines from Bob Dylan's Silvio into the middle of "Victor Jara's Hands," turning the song a little sideways with a borrowed and entirely new vibe. It's a trick I've always liked - not exactly a cover song, but a bit of an homage. Calexico just borrowed the "Silvio" chorus, weaving it seamlessly with their own song. I've seen other

I can't believe I haven't done this one yet! The indie and indie-minded love to cover some Petty. He may be terrible at taxes, but he's great at writing songs. The zip file does NOT have the direct-linked ez archive songs in it; just the savefile ones. A is for Tom's most famous song . . . American Girl-Melora Creager B is for Backyard Tire Fire's tribute to this great songwriter . . . Tom Petty-Backyard Tire Fire C is for Change the Locks-Keller [...]

(Photo courtesy of the beloved and esteemed Chip .) I've taped Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers somewhere around 40 times now, so it's a little hard for me to get psyched about yet another set on tape. :) However, I'm sure there will be plenty of fans wanting to get their hands on this. Every time the Peacemakers play The Gothic, a healthy helping of new faces turns out for the show. It's great to see the word about their live acts continually spreading to reach a wider audience. [...]
The new trailer for The Incredible Hulk debuted this week, giving audiences a first look at the Jade Giant, Abomination, and a flick that will probably be more about smashing stuff than Ang Lee's cinematic meditation on emotional repression. What do you think? Can the Not-So-Jolly Green Giant compete with ...

This news just made my day - The Alternate Routes have just announced a fall tour with another Fuel/Friends favorite, Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers ! This is most excellent news. I have been waiting to spring on an Alternate Routes tour since I first learned about them a few months ago, and have been listening to their Good and Reckless and True album non-stop ever since. I'm sold on their expansive, golden, rootsy-rock sound and [...]

I'm going to come right out and say it and consequences be damned. Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers remind me of an updated version of a cross between Neil Diamond and Jimmy Buffet . There, I said it. Strike this blog from your list of blogs to visit while killing time at work if you will. Now that I've got that out in the open, I'll continue in my confessional manner. Growing up, my favorite musician was Neil Diamond. That's right. Going through my father's record collection, [...]

(I did an image search for "title" and this came up!?!) More than you probably have time to listen to… but these great songs have been in my inbox for awhile now. Check on it! We All Have Hooks For Hands ~ Hold On, C'mon (best 9-piece band from Sioux Falls, ever. A Midwest Broken Social Scene, perhaps?) Kristoffer Ragnstam ~ Breakfast By The Mattress (sorta kids music meets Scissor Sisters) Thomas Lunch ~ Tator [...]

While not as insanely hilarious as ThingsMyBoyfriendSays.com , this site fills that same voyeuristic niche of eavesdropping into the (unintentionally funny) things people say with no regard for who is listening. OverheardinNewYork .com solicits contributions from New Yorkers with good ears, and the result is a site that I regularly lose track of time on: Hobo: Go shorty, it's your birthday... Drunk black woman, joining in: Yeah! Go, go! Hobo: Shorty, it's your shorty... Drunk black woman: You singing [...]
Fuel readers may remember that my first interview in this forum was a lovely conversation with the articulate and musically passionate Roger Clyne (of The Peacemakers and The Refreshments fame). I wanted to pass along an update email from Clyne with news of a new album and their wonderful bi-annual (or is it semi-annual? two times a year) Mexico show coming up next weekend . I think you can still get tickets ( anyo ne up for a spontaneous Mexico trip? [...]
