We're happy to see that perennially knit-capped, Mercury Prize-winning Brit singer/songwriter Damon Gough -- aka Badly Drawn Boy -- is back for his first new recordings since 2006's Born In the U.K. Similar to his acclaimed songcycle/score for the '03 Nick Hornby film About A Boy , new album is Is There Nothing We Could Do" a collection of 15 new songs "from and inspired by" the upcoming British TV film The Fattest Man In Britain starring busy character actor Timothy Spall. New project arrives overseas on December 14 -- hopefully we'll see [...]

"For a bunch of good looking people, you sure are boring and I can't hang around with that certainty because it dies with the day. A peculiar assessment, She said. Maybe, I continued, Yet even those that don't like me expect a lot. You think you deserve something, and you're mad, she said again and again. I was mad with the desire to believe in an absolute, and fingering the perils of such belief in my mind all day. Of course I deserved something, a million dollars an ounce and I couldn't give this much heart away. I thought that [...]

Frank Yang Q: Without a new record to promote - Mr. Love & Justice has been out for close to two years - what reason did Billy Bragg have for staging an ambitious cross-Canada tour ? A: Who cares? Any time you get the opportunity to see Billy Bragg live, you take it, no questions asked. Of course, I say that having missed his last three appearances in Toronto - the September 2006 show at the Music Hall for not one but two weddings, [...]

The savory indie-pop goodness of Rogue Wave have announced that they will have a new album called Permalight coming out March 2, 2010 and they have announced some new tour dates in support of said album, including a stop here at the Loft in Dallas. I have caught these guys 3 times before and while they certainly fall into the easy-going indie-pop category, they have some damn good songs and some very hook-y hooks that you can't deny. Last night, PBS/Independent Lens presented D Tour , a documentary about Pat Spurgeon from Rogue Wave. He was born with only one kidney, and was lucky enough to get a kidney transplant only to have it fail as well. The doc focuses on his struggles to live the life of a touring drummer, all while administering dialysis to himself twice a day while on the road, not to mention his search for a new kidney donor. I learned about this doc through Adam from Beggar's Banquet, as he's friends with Pat and helped produce the documentary. Tying [...]
The independent music documentary " D Tour " (Dialysis Tour) is about Rogue Wave drummer Pat Spurgeon's struggle with a failing kidney, a search for a donor, while still trying to still pursue the music that is so vital to his existence. I watched it one warm evening this summer and found it both inspiring and challenging - punctuated throughout with terrific musical moments. In addition to being a compelling look at the organ donation system in the US today, the pitfalls that can trip up [...]

Gunnar Bjorling I am convinced that somewhere within the Labrador Records offices in Stockholm, there exists a magical machine that issues mandates to bands on the roster as to what their next albums must sound like. For example, The Radio Dept drew "Belle & Sebastian meets the Jesus & Mary Chain" for their debut and then "depressed Pet Shop Boys" for the follow-up and The Mary Onettes , it seems, were told to make their new record Puzzles sound like "the Shout Out Louds covering Echo & The [...]

We were thinking today about "Lake Michigan" when we learned that Zach Rogue and Rogue Wave had completed their fourth as-yet-untitled album for a scheduled release on Jack Johnson's Brushfire label March 2. Recorded in Oxford, Mississippi this past spring, the project is certainly near the top of our "Can't Wait" list for the new year. For now -- we'll revisit one of the best tracks from their 2007 album Asleep at Heaven's Gate . Myspace Artist Site

Reviews of Sunparlour Players, The Grass and Dinosaur Jr. Over the past couple of months, secular work and concerts have pretty much taken over the bulk of my life, meaning that I haven't had much of an opportunity to tell you about some of the CD's that I've been enjoying lately. So, why don't I do that now: Sunparlour Players - Wave North I'm kinda weird sometimes. There are times where I look just as forward [...]
Was working on a pitch last week, trying to find songs similar to this one for an indie film. My recommendations where apparently close, but I didn't get the cigar. However, I was reminded how beautiful this song is. Eyes by Rogue Wave .
I was wading deep through the depths of my music collection this weekend when I stumbled about this foursome of awesome covers by San Francisco's Rogue Wave. Their pretty well known around the Bay, but even if you've never heard of them chances are you've heard of the artists they are covering: so this might be a good place to start if you want to check them out. Afterwards, if you like what you hear, I'd recommend heading over to Insound where you can pick up Rogue Wave's fantastic debut album Out of the Shadow [...]
