It's time for another edition of Commercial Watch , where I again highlight some of the hippest, indiest songs that are out there soundtracking commercials for cars, mobile phones, chewing gums and national football leagues. Since I know all of you are the Hulu / DVR / next-day-on-youtube type, here's a few of the best tunes that the modern day Don Drapers and Peggy Olsons have been digging up. The commercials are embedded below with MP3s included. Make sure to click the continue reading link to double the pleasure, double the fun, and uh... see the full post. [...]

It's hard to believe that it's a true coincidence each and every one of us here at The Wounded Jukebox used to DJ for the same radio station. For all six of us, the memories of WUSO 89.1 The Berg are one of the biggest parts of our college lives. It provided a slip n' [...]

Last week (AKA: The Best Week Ever! ), Kristin and I got ourselves a new little kitten, and per Logan's suggestion, I've put together a short playlist to celebrate. It's made up of a songs about cats, some explicitly, and others not so much. Like the Mountain Goats song, for example, is pretty impressionistic in its suggestion of a feline, with lines like "in your arms, I am a wild creature" and "white carpet thick with pet hair"; while both The Weakerthans tracks actually follow the heartbreaking story of Virtute the cat, one of the single saddest [...]

The lesser known of those citywide music conferences, Noise Pop is a spiraling six-day celebration of indie artists, music and culture that takes place throughout various San Francisco music venues, cinema houses and boutiques every February. Between the Northern & Southern Stages [ Lollapalooza has rocked Chicago for six straight years as the reincarnation of a '90s music festival founded by Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell. Last weekend, Chi-town native Marisa Ptak soaked in Lollapalooza 2010: three days of music, heat, rain, and fashion. Below, her dispatch from the festival, with enough new tunes to last the rest of the summer.] FRIDAY - Day 1 - Get your [...]

1. Soft - Droppin' - I don't know much about this band other than this song is really freakin' good. Hi-hats are singing in the streets tonight. [from Gone Faded | buy ] 2. Slaid Cleaves - This Morning I Am Born Again (Woody Guthrie) - There are few things dirtier, more desolate, more hallowed, than a properly executed bluegrass song. Woody Guthrie was the man and Cleaves brings out the best in it. [from Broke Down | buy ] 3. Rogue Wave [...]
Whether it's the melody or lyrics, the catchiness or repeatability, the party starter or the emotive heart tugger, a song has to make a connection with you. It has to stop your mind whirling and say -- rather, demand -- "Stop and listen!". Of the hundreds of tracks we posted (and hundreds more we listened to) this year, these were the ones we most connected with. The ones that made us stop and listen every time. A quick note on the rules we followed. Basically, like last year, nearly everything released in the year - whether from [...]
So many great tunes and such a tough task to narrow all of them down to my top 10 of 2010. Johnny, Chuck, Deuce and myself have picked so many fantastic tunes this year that even though this is the third list so far this week, maybe some of your favorites haven't shown up yet. If not, maybe mine will change that, so with out further ado, My Top 10 of 2010 :#?. "New People {Empire Way Remix}"/Blue
Before letting you scroll through my Top 10, I wanted to take a moment to tell you all that my cheater pick for best of the album of 2010 is Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More. Somehow that feels cheap because it was released in 2009 in the U.K. (this is why I call it my cheater pick). Outside of that my personal pick for album of the year, non-cheater style, would probably go to Delta Spirit for their

Fresh from performing at the Midi Festival on the French Riviera at the weekend, Still Corners are giving away their beautiful rendition of the classic Rogue Wave song 'Eyes'. Already a staple in Still Corners' live set, the cover seems fitting as the band announce their new single (due early 2011) will be released via Sub Pop - the label that Rogue Wave were signed to when the track was originally released in 2005. Still Corners will appear at the TLOBF co-curated Shhh! Festival , taking place at Cecil Sharp House, London on January 22. Other [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Some tracks on our list of the best songs of 2010 were so gorgeous they gave us goose bumps; others rocked our freaking faces off. Some left us blissed out or melancholy, while others propelled us onto the dance floor. The common thread? Each speaks to the kaleidoscopic nature of the musical landscape today, and we're embracing the beautiful chaos with [...]

London's Still Corners sent over this dreamily bittersweet, reverb-soaked new cover of Rogue Wave 's " Eyes ," a song they've been mixing into their recent live sets (the original version of which you might have heard a few hundred times lately on this ). The group will make their U.S. debut in March 2011 with a show at Glasslands in Brooklyn, with a trip to Texas for SXSW hopefully to follow? mp3: Still Corners :: Eyes [...]

It is unprofessional to reveal a bias, but if you are a quality artist from New Jersey then you are certainly likely to get my attention. It helps even more if you perform regularly at The Stone Pony, a trademark Jersey venue that my parents frequented when they were in their teens. My teenage self [...]
