While it is wonderful that the BBC continues to spend the money to bring high-quality American drama to the poor TV screens of Airstrip One , it is rather embarrassing to be starting on a series a month after the season finale has been shown across the pond, not to mention the temptation to skip the wait with a torrent. Still, Heroes is sterling stuff, and I'm glad to finally be able to watch it. And, best of all, it has a plot that is actually going somewhere ; a mercy after two years of Lost. [...]

I'm heading out in, oh, 20 minutes for a two week tour with my band, and this is the first of many mixes I have made for this trek amongst the stars. I really like having mix tapes in the van when stuck within its walls for four to ten hours a day. It brings a sort of focus to the drive that makes it that much more deliberate: if the soundtrack is cool, the drive is cool. Expect another mix soon! Download: Albert Hammond Jr. - "In Transit" Download: Interpol - "All Fired [...]
It was a dark and stormy night in May (all the best stories start with dark and stormy) when I got a phone call from a friend: "Hey, I'm heading out to Rogue Wave 's Oakland studio for a huge jam session for their new album!" Along with thirty of their friends, ranging in age from teensy to old, experienced musican to absolute novice, Rogue Wave staged a melodic cacophony for in their song "Own Your Own Home" on their newest album Asleep At Heaven's Gate. It sounded like an insufferably cool idea [...]

I ignored Rogue Wave's latest sub pop release, Descend Like Vultures , for the better part of a year-and-a-half, which was a complete mistake on my part. One particular track, California , has been glued to the walls of my brain for the past few days. It's a perfect song for driving in the summer with the windows down: breezy, sparse, and fun. A lightly picked and way too catchy guitar melody is picked with the occasional string swell and Zach Rogue's voice is in the finest of forms. I have been looking [...]

News reaches us that Rogue Wave are to return on September 18th with their third release entitled Asleep At Heaven's Gate . The albums birth came after a rather traumatic year for the band, that saw the drummer having a kidney transplant and the keyboardist losing his father. The new album was produced by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney, Elvis Costello) with Zach Rogue and also features John Vanderslice and Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws. Rogue Wave formed five years ago when Rogue self-recorded his debut Out of the Shadow , later enlisting a full [...]
Earthworm – The Statics I saw these guys the other night and loved it. This was always guaranteed to be the case, seeing as they’re headed by the legendary Patrick Clayton (affectionately known as the K-man), but I was doubly impressed when they turned up and played some great music. This song is a REALLY old demo off their myspace, but it still gives a good idea of what to expect. The Taste In My Mouth – Shapes and Sizes I don’t know what it is about this [...]
Rogue Wave have had an interesting two years since their last album Descended Like Vultures was released. Drummer Pat Spurgeon had a kidney transplant, keyboardist Gram Lebron's father passed away, singer Zach Rogue fathered a daughter and the band recruited a new bass player, Patrick Abernethy (formerly of Beulah ). The band's contract with Sub Pop also expired and they were picked up by none other than Jack Johnson as the fifth act on his Brushfire Records label. Despite what must have been a hectic couple of years, to say the [...]

A wistful (or confused) Imogen Heap While Caleb was on the road between Nashville and Champaign, IL, today, I was spending a melancholy day on the couch, watching way too much sports for a guy whose jobs are to blog every few days and read the news over the radio once every couple of weeks. (I did, however, get to see a college baseball player from my hometown hit a huge two-run homer to put the UNC Tarheels up for good against the South Carolina Gamecocks (terrific mascot name), sending them [...]
So I did get the iPod/Zune/MP3 auxiliary input installed in the car last night and it sounds pretty good. Here is an abbreviated shuffle mix of what was playing last night as I removed the center console and disconnected the negative battery terminal. Maybe we'll replay it at the garage sale this morning. And then there was the scuffle between Chicago Cubs catcher Michael Barrett and pitcher Carlos Zambrano. Well, since the Cubs (in my book) have officially begun their implosion, at least they are proving to be somewhat entertaining. I just wonder [...]

Nirvana is one of those bands who only certain people can cover well, but that doesn't stop many of them from trying. I'd venture to say that they are the most covered 90's era band. Although I don't have the data to back that up, I do have some examples. Which one is your favorite? Talk to me or I stop posting. (not really) 1 Animal Collective - Polly (Nirvana cover) 2 Cibo Matto - About A Girl (Nirvana cover) 3 Rogue Wave - On [...]

I've been home for a little under an hour, just long enough to absorb the season finale to my favorite show on TV via DVR. Anyone that's been following the plot line(s) of Heroes this season has been witnessing some great television, no doubt. I'm sorting through some mail, unpacking, and wondering why there aren't more USA towns like Asheville, North Carolina. [MP3] Rogue Wave - Eyes

Nothing has more potential to amaze and infuriate than a cover song. No matter what you do, someone will be angry that their favorite song was desecrated by the hands of a lesser musician. On the other hand, someone will be saying, "It's even better than the original!" In any case, I always like a good cover that dares to stray from the sound of the original and bring a little something of its own to the table. So here they are, a few covers I've always loved, from Dismemberment Plan's tragic reworking of the 80's pop hit [...]

It's Friday, which must mean a contest or something, right? Spiderman 3 came out last week and it's, well, a Spiderman movie - all villains and stunts and improbable choices. The thing that makes it notable is the dope soundtrack, which features folks like Rogue Wave, Wolfmother, The Killers, JET, The Walkmen and recent Fuel favorite Coconut Records . I have one Spiderman prize pack to give away, and it kind of cracks me up because it would be a total bonanza especially for a 12-year-old male reader [...]
Copyright infringement, like identity theft, affects millions of people every year! So I guess that is why the powers that be at Spiderman 3 Inc . decided to make the promo discs for the new soundtrack harder to get into than Donna Martin’s knickers. Seriously. Before I can even open this promo slab, I have to agree to some crazy restricted release jibber jabber about express written consent like I’m thinking about illegally broadcasting MLB games. The CD has my name and company printed on it, and is watermarked so I can’t sell it. Couple that with [...]

According to various reports California, if it were an independent nation, would be the fifth largest economy in the world. A state of infinite possibilities, it has always seemed to me to be lacking in musical highlights. Since those kings of slacker rock Pavement burst out of Stockton and gave their musical genius to the world, I have found myself looking to other US states for my musical experiences. Grandaddy shone briefly for a while but states like New York (obviously), Washington, Oregon and of course Texas have provided great artists that have delighted me and the musical world. Even [...]

I'm going to try to get through this post without comparing Rogue Wave to The Shins, since they seem to get that a lot. From Oakland CA, Rogue Wave creates a signature sound of light guitar strokes/drum beats, and applies it to relaxed and upbeat tempos. Lead singer Zach Rogue has a delicate voice that melts into the instrumentals. These guys kind of sound like The Shins. Dammit! Add this Band on Myspace [...]
