Totally went off last night at Nate's birthday party. There was a gnarly stripper in a LOST replica DHARMA Initiative jumpsuit, way too much Flip Cup, a 4:00am Dance Dance Revolution competition, and the cops only showed up twice investigating noise complaints! I'd say we successfully dragged the birthday boy into the first hours of his 27th year with style. So, I'm gonna get some rest. How's about a mix tape for you. RULES for uninitiated noobs : I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods [...]
The Phil Spector -penned / Ronettes -performed “Be My Baby” intro is probably the most iconic drum beat in pop music history and we here at Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good can't get enough of that classic "Boom! Boom boom, cha!". This spring I posted two mixes with about 40 songs worth of "Be My Baby" drum beats and since then I've been hearing it everywhere (twee-poppers and lo-fi bands like Waaves and Best Coast seem to have a particular affinity for the beat). For version 3.0 of this mix, I've [...]

The last time I saw Ted Leo was at Pitchfork Fest, where he swung a microphone into his forehead and had blood streaming down his face for the last song. There wasn't any bleeding this time around, but Ted Leo did put on a solid opening set to the last day of Pygmalion Festival. The Krannert Center seems like a strange place for the punk rocker to play, given that all the other days of the year the venue plays host to classical and jazz orchestras, but the crowd had no problem in moving away from the seats to [...]

Honestly, how did I ever get through these Ohio winters WITHOUT the netflix watch instantly option? In my quest to watch at least one foreign movie a week until the boredom ceases, tonight I treated myself to a good old fashioned Norwegian-made Nazi zombie flick. Imagine 'Evil Dead' meets 'Saving Private Ryan'....if you can. And I mean that in the best possible sense, the movie was a blast. Granted, after my last adventure in foreign film outing, Japan's 'Maid Droid', the bar was set pretty low, but I think this one is a winner no matter what. Thank [...]

New Year's Eve in New York City is quite possibly the craziest night of the year around these parts. People go absolutely nuts whether they are penned in like cattle in Times Square or celebrating a casual, drunken New Year with friends somewhere closer to home, people do not hold back for this holiday. Fittingly it is one of the busiest days of the year for the music venues of the city, booking acts and charging exorbitant amounts to allow people to pay even more for booze. It may not be my favorite night of the year to go out, [...]

given what we know about roky erickson’s history before, during and after hospitalisation it’s hard to separate his music from the mental illness that pushed him to the brink, kicked him off, beat him with shitty sticks on the way down then dragged him around by the hair for twenty years. it’s a sad fucking story anyway. one i won’t repeat, that’s well documented in you’re gonna miss me . but one (much the same as daniel johnston) with some semblance of a happy ending, since illness is being contained, songs are being written and [...]

The idea that Earth has been visited by aliens at some point in the distant past is not a new one. In Sumer, the alien Gods were known as the Anunnaki. While in Greece, they are known as Annodoti and in the Celtic lore, the Tuatha de Danaan. Tthe Semetic scriptures (Torah, Talmud, Old Testament, and other Apocryphal texts like the Book of Enoch), call them The Nephilim, The Sons of God, or The Watchers. We are told the gods themselves had their own monarchy, with laws of succession similar to our own, and they built a [...]

If you have ghosts, you have everything... Halloween never interested me all that much, but it´s everywhere these days, so what can a poor boy do? Compile a halloween-themed Roky Erickson six pack for ya I guess... So here goes. Featuring a zombie, a creature, some demons and ghosts, and last but not least a two-headed dog. "Winds quiet in the night, her body just blows messiah, sickening sweet sight left and right... is all right does not please my appetite..." Right [...]

Who are the scariest dudes in rock and/or roll? The first one that popped into my head was Nick Cave . Not only does he look like the spawn of Dracula, but his music sometimes freaks me out too. According to our friends at Wikipedia , the Aussie and his band are, "renowned for its highly dark, challenging lyrics and violent sound." That's putting it nicely! Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - I'm Gonna Kill That Woman.mp3 Buy (MP3 only): [...]

"[The angel] carried my spirit away to the desert. I saw the Scarlet Woman sitting on the Beast with seven heads and ten horns, covered with blasphemous names. The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and gilded with gold and precious stones and pearls, with a colden cup in her hand filled with the abominations and the unclean things of her fornication. On her forehead a name had been written, a mystery: Babalon the Great, the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the Earth. I saw the woman was drunk from the blood of the Saints, and [...]

My musical obsessed mind has forced me into posting once more today. When I was listening to Roky Erickson earlier I was reminded of just how much fun his stuff is(be it solo or with the 13th Floor Elevators) ...so I wanted to share a couple more of my favorites. The first one was immortalized in movie mix tape from thanks to John Cusack, and the second one is my all time favorite Roky song...rock on. 13th Floor Elevators - 'You're Gonna Miss Me' MP3 [...]

A couple photos from Sunday night's Roky Erickson show at Maxwell's in Hoboken NJ. Roky and his band The Explosions blistered through a set of songs that made him the legend he is today. Opening with A Cold Night For Alligators and tearing through a set of his classics like You're Gonna Miss Me , Bermuda ,Two Headed Dog , Starry Eyes and more.

I had mixed feelings about the show. First off, I'd heard from several people that the recent London show was shit. Just awful. But I'd also heard reports that he'd played great at both that gig and others. Anyone that expects for Rok and crew to get up on stage and blast out some Elevators songs with the same passion, mysticism and fury that they had in the 60's is just retarded. First off, it's a different band with different playing styles and those songs aren't exactly easy to "paint by numbers" with. [...]
So These New Puritans have been getting all the buzz lately, only problem is they only had that short little EP to whet our appetites with. Well, not anymore now that Beat Pyramid has hit the webs! This infectious dance punk music is all the rage right now and this British boys are doing it just about as well as anyone else out there. Listen to the tunes below, see for yourself, but trust me when

I'm sure something's crossed your mind today. What are you thinking about ? 1 : The Red Button - Can't Stop Thinking About Her Buy She's About To Cross My Mind 2 : Laura Cantrell - Do You Ever Think Of Me ? Buy Not The Trembling Kind 3 : Sebadoh - Think (Let Tomorrow Bee) [...]

Jarvis Cocker reading "Rats" Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Stagger Lee (live) Roky - I Walked With A Zombie
Is there any holiday that you get more excited for than Halloween? Sure when you were a kid it was all about the gifts of Christmas, but now that we're all grownd up we usually spend more on Christmas then we reap. Easter is freakin' gay. Valentine's sucks balls even if you're in a relationship. I'm not a mother or a father. So I guess for me its between Thanksgiving and Halloween. Eating vs. Getting Dressed Up Like an Asshole. Hmmm, tough call really but I'll give a slight edge to getting dressed up like an asshole, because then you [...]
Fifty years ago today, the Soviet Union launched the world's first artificial satellite, the Sputnik, which in turn started the space race that led to cool things like the computer you're reading this on. It also helped usher in the arms race between the United States and the USSR, since Sputnik's rocket could also deliver nuclear bombs. Here's some interesting bits and pieces I've come across researching Sputnik: Sputnik program The Sputnik program was a series of unmanned space missions launched by the Soviet Union in late 1957 to demonstrate the viability [...]

Outside Austin, Texas, a 53-year-old man sleeps to the melody of four radios, three televisions, two amps, a radio scanner, and a Casio keyboard, all screeching at the same time. Loudly. He has three teeth and his hair is matted into one huge dreadlock. This is the story of Roky Erickson: manic frontman for the legendary band The 13th Floor Elevators, creators of psychedelic music and muse to Janis Joplin. Known for his colossal heroin & LSD binges, struggles with schizophrenia, and an unthinkable term at Rusk Hospital for the Criminally Insane, Roky went missing from the world. [...]
