On the surface 'Born Under A Bad Sign' hardly reflects the hardship you might expect in a song with such a gloomy title. Distilling the essence of Of Montreal's lighter moments (who The Rollercoaster Project aka Johnny White has supported in the past) it appears carefree and nonchalant, bowling along in a haze of delicate strings and spry drums. Delve deeper into the story though and it becomes a tale of homesickness and denial, thickening the fluffy comforting blanket of sound as White relays "I remember thinking about my home. I tried to put it [...]

Sound Team's greatest achievement was undoubtedly their 'Work' EP. A couple of years of bright invention like that should have seen them ride into the sunset. As it turned out that's exactly what happened and Bill and company are probably much happier with that ongoing conclusion. The Rollercoaster Project remind me of Sound Team except that in this case it is a band of one, consisting of Johnny White from Sheffield. 'What Happened' is a track from his debut album and I was immediately, and quite curiously it must be said, drawn back to ' It's Obvious What's Happening Here [...]

"Hoods Up" - Rollercoaster Project Churning, robotic electro-goth, with a heart of pure pop. I'm oddly entranced by the buried, electronic vocals, which hint only intermittently, only ever so slightly, at their human origin; it's kind of like "Kid A" funneled through a lush carnival of soaring synth pop, on a bed of electronic nails. The wistful, almost heartbreaking melody of the chorus is icing on the electro-cake. Note how the electronic artifice fades into nature noises for the last minute of the track. It's not a half hour of crickets (see Neko [...]

Remove some of the Donnie Darko irony from M83, and you've got The Rollercoaster Project, a one-man project created by Sheffield, England's Johnny White . Weaned on a four-track, White believes in the experience of media through second- and third-hand encounters, as found on worn-out cassette tapes and videotapes; staples of his childhood. The wandering murkiness of this track has a distinctive clarity towards the end, as if he's drawn what he needs from it, and wishes to express what he's discovered. The Rollercoaster Project - "What Happened" The [...]

Not too many moons into the near future the good people at Absolutely Kosher will be releasing Revenge, The Rollercoaster Project's debut album which has seriously knocked us all for sixxx. A positively awesome mindmelt of crystal chamber compositions, bleeding wire computer balladry, and shards of black metal noise filtered ...

( flickr , CC ) What Happened builds quickly, step by step, to a puzzling break. A clever slight of sound. Spunky and melodic. The Rollercoaster Project, What Happened download: What Happened From Dreamboat Records 2008 (label sampler). myspace / label

MP3: The Rollercoaster Project - What Happened Anthemaic drone digs amongst the diamonds, snow and leaves and finds some soil. For a moment metallic drills of synths driven by a rising tide of electricity give way to all those working to get down on their hands and knees and dig - it's the most comfortable way - and in a panic it seems like the fastest. There cold hands find the soil, and the Rollercoaster Projects finds a voice. And they celebrate. I've been really enjoying (digging?) The [...]
