Tonight after work I went down and pushed my fingers through the dark, rich-smelling soil in my little garden plot and breathed in the smell of newness on its way. I turned over the black soil with a vengeance, and added some organic fertilizer/compost stuff into it, even planting a few swaths of seeds before the sun slipped behind the peak and the wind grew cold on my damp and dirty skin. I have never ever had a garden before. Other than one notable exception, I've never even had much luck growing anything, ever. I feel I've always [...]

"...leaving better folks than us in the cold rain." It has apparently been years since I've last written about Chapel Hill's Roman Candle (but only days since I've either thought about, listened to, or probably spoken of the 3 piece). T he Wee Hours Revue , released back in the days of my precious youth - 2006, has followed me around for the past 3 years. I can't shake it. [...]
I'm a Roman Candle. My head is full of flames.I've always wondered if Roman Candle named themselves after the Elliott Smith album. Probably not. I suppose it's more likely that they're named after...y... Continue reading "Fresh Track: Roman Candle Hit the Road With Deep Vibration, Give Us a Free Tune" >
Through the window and across the street, seventeen buses solemnly sleep. This Monday has me feeling out of place. This world of tense anticipation cautioned by restless uncertainty. You know the one I speak of. That world in between seasons, where the mercury may rise 60 degrees fahrenheit, but the crusty patches of smokey colored [...]

[Timshel, Skip, and Logan Matheny of Roman Candle ] I gotta say I'm excited to hear the news that Roman Candle will be releasing a brand new album, Oh Tall Tree in the Ear , on May 12. The forthcoming record will be the band's third album to-date and its first for the Nashville-based label Carnival Recording. You can count me among those that were taken in by the roots rock charms of Roman Candle's second full-length album The Wee Hours Revue (V2) from back [...]

Oh Tall Tree In the Ear will hit the streets May 12th.The album was recorded in Nashville and produced by Jason Lehning (Allison Krauss) and Chris Stamey (Whiskeytown). What I've heard is catchy and twangy. Can you think of anything better than getting out on the classic American two lane highways and taking a road trip? There are many reasons to hit the road these days. Over the weekend a United States Astronaut had a reason and she hit the road. In this case it may have been a little different reason than Dean Moriarty's. It turns out that Lisa Nowak had the hots for another one of her fellow rocketeer spacemen. Well, when you're married this is what you do. You get in your car, throw on a wig [...]

Roman Candle: " New York This Morning " " Winterlight " (from The Wee Hours Revue 2006. Buy / download .) Well, another week of ridiculous busyness, and consequently, little time for blog business. But there is this: You may recall my enthusiasm when Roman Candle 's Wee Hours Revue was released earlier this year. Apart from the saga of its convoluted route to finding [...]

"The things you've done have made me what I am." I've found your new favorite band. Roman Candle , from Chapel Hill, does absolutely everything right. They're the perfect blend of pop, alt-country, and even a little bit of jazz. I'm in love. Collectively, the band has a ton of experience under their belt. Regardless of the fact that they've released only one album previously, they've collaborated with my obvious favorite Ryan Adams, Patrick Park, and various others. [...]
