So many local bands come and go so quickly, it's sometimes easy to forget how much you miss something until you're confronted with a definitive reminder. In this case, the missed band in question is Roman Photos and the definitive reminder comes in the form of new electronic trio Kolossi , which just happens to be made up of former members of (you guessed it) Roman Photos. Call it a reincarnation, if you will. The band has just released their first EP, entitled The Chase , via Double Phantom Digital , and [...]

Three quarters of the recently disbanded Roman Photos have continued on under a new moniker, Kolossi , and they just released the first taste of this new incarnation. It's a five song record called The Chase , which deals in atmospheric dance music not dissimilar from Roman Photos . Here's a track, and you can get it for free below. ![[Guest Mixtape] David Mansfield of Double Phantom Records](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3536976_lg.jpg)
Being a huge fan of mixtapes, I decided it would be fun to have musicians, bloggers, labels, etc contribute mixes to Ohmpark this summer. For the second installment of this series, David Mansfield of Double Phantom Records and the now defunct Roman Photos has put together a summer mixtape for us. Double Phantom has been around roughly as long as this blog, and in that time, it's become an institution in Atlanta's independent music scene. My favourite thing about DP is that it features a wide range of diversity. Not only are there so many aesthetically different artists [...]

Last week Roman Photos released their final EP before disbanding after losing bassist Chris Daresta. The three remaining members plan to continue making music together under a different moniker, and each is working on solo material. Before I even had a chance to blog about that last record, RP 's Allen Taylor dropped a new release from his project Feast Of Violet . The five song EP features guests spots that include Featureless Ghost , Ominous Castle , The Voice Of Saturn , and Seth Bolton ( Living Rooms, Young Again [...]

Warning Light , the project of Roman Photos member Drew Haddon, just dropped a new release, a five song free EP called New Pilgrimage . It's a collection of atmospheric pieces that are often beautiful, frequently haunting, and occasionally uncomfortable, exactly the way I like my drone. So if you're a fan of that sort of stuff, you'll definitely want to check it out: Warning Light : "Europa by Rail" Download New Pilgrimage EP [...]

If you're a fan of archival sock hop and/or classic American Bandstand -type footage, man, are you ever in luck. Roman Photos have just posted a video for "Ribcage" taken from last year's 7-inch released on Army of Bad Luck Records . I'm not sure what vintage '50s flicks editor Will Lewis pulled this from, but he's done an admirable job of tying it to the band's rumbling electronic synth grooves. The dichotomy between the two is sometimes a little clumsy, but much like the song, the video is blissfully buoyant and tons of fun. [...]

Well, let's face it, things round these parts have been a wee bit quiet of late. This has been caused mainly by the fact that 'Proper Work' got mad hectic, baby daughter became increasingly all-encompassing and well, Christmas kinda happened upon me... Anyways, excuses out of the way, the upshot meant that there has not really been much time dedicated round these blogging parts over the last few weeks, which has meant that we missed out on quite a few decent little single/EP releases... [...]

Roman Photos “Decline” b/w “These Arms” Double Phantom Records, 2010 With their second 7-inch release in almost as many weeks, Roman Photos continue to explore the dark electronic path they've been traveling down for most of this year. It's a circuitous journey, one that stretches back a couple of decades to tap into the pulsing dance floor grooves and lavish arrangements of '80s dance music before circling back to cozy up against the insistent beats and ambient stylings of modern house and electropop. When I posted A-side track, "Decline," last [...]

On the heels of their “Ribcage” b/w “Closer” 7-inch released just two weeks ago on Army of Bad Luck , Roman Photos will release another pair of tracks on wax, this time via local imprint Double Phantom Records which has been on point all yearlong with their releases— Living Rooms, Qurious, The N.E.C., Carnivores, Abby Gogo, and the list goes on. The “Decline” b/w “These Arms” 7-inch will be out next Tuesday, December 7th, and will come with a CD-R that includes a Qurious remix of the B-side track, "These [...]

Allen Taylor of Roman Photos has his own solo project called Feast Of Violet , and he dropped a 5-track EP under that moniker earlier this year called Botany Charm . It's ambient and loopy, but goes in and out of these tribal sort of grooves. I'm enjoying it thoroughly right now, so go grab it for free via Double Phantom Digital . Feast Of Violet : "Night Hours" Download/Stream Botany Charm EP [...]

Roman Photos "Ribcage" b/w "Closer" Army of Bad Luck, 2010 "Ribcage," the A-side of Roman Photos' debut 73 for Army of Bad Luck , wastes no time in making its demands known. That thumping beat, so immediate and insistent, comes rumbling out of the gate and practically dares you to stand still. It's wildly infectious but deliberately rock-steady, allowing the band to layer the track with a hypnotic dub bass line, skittering percussion and washed-out vocals. It's blissfully buoyant and almost coy in it's nonchalance, but then out the blue the [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Grinderman w/ Armen Ra Thursday, November 18 Variety Playhouse - 1099 Euclid Avenue NE in Atlanta 30307 Admission is $35 ADV / $40 DOS / Purchase Tickets Even the most ardent Grinderman supporter needs to be willing to suspend at least a little disbelief. The Nick Cave -led, Bad Seeds -backed band writes perilously dark, libidinous rock that is as filthy dirty and trashy as it comes. That such a feral, primal squall of [...]

Atlanta seems to have a lot of unnoticed talent, and that being the case, I was fortunate enough to find an email including some sweet bedroom dance tunes from Roman Photos , who have a killer design aesthetic to go with their killer tuneage. They've got a few 73s coming out in the next few months, one on Double Phantom Records . The track hear has some soft vocal traits, but don't think of this as some sort of downtrodden affair; there's an underlying beauty incorporated beneath layers of synth haze. [...]

If you're searching for something a little "minimal" in your rock-steady diet, you may want to check out the band Roman Photos . The group has a brand new 7" coming out on small boutique label Double Phantom (Selmanaires, Carnivores) on December 7th of this year, and has opened for acts like Philadelphia's Cold Cave....Drew Haddon also plays in his own project "Warning Light". The name of this group, however, is apparently a play on the title of a track by now defunct-French cold-wave artist Ruth . The download track "Decline" from [...]

David from the Atlanta, Georgia dance/synth laden electro outfit Roman Photos just sent over the title track from their upcoming Ribcage 7 inch which is about to be put out by Army Of Bad Luck very soon. The vinyl includes Ribcage and Closer on the backside, and comes with a CDr of remixes of both tracks. You can stream everything already on their bandcamp . The tune is a pretty awesome dancefloor filler, with a heavy bassline and a reduced rhythm section quite reminiscent of the DFA squad, and [...]
