I can remember fast forwarding over this track back in the 802s and 902s as I listened to the two or three tracks I really enjoyed and then the other day on Spotify, I let this one play and it blew me away. So haunting with goth elements that I had no idea Romeo Void had delved into. Turn the lights down, pour yourself a glass of red wine and let this one swim around you a couple of times. It is really quite beautiful...and that sax solo is unbelievable. Rome Void - I Mean It [...]
Romeo Void, Human Hands, Wild Kingdom The Country Club, Reseda, CA 1981 (exact date unknown) Admission? Time: 8:00 PM Human Hands Shortly after meeting David Wiley at Moby Disc the week before, I somehow convinced my dad to take me to see this show for my Birthday. We got seated, and ordered a couple of sodas, and I noticed David Wiley walking around the audience chatting with half the crowd, and then he makes his way over and starts talking with me and my dad; I [...]

Amanda Blank is an American singer and rapper, who is not afraid to speak her mind and do whatever she wishes. Her biggest hit is "Might Like You Better", which is a cover of the 80's classic "Never Say Never" by Romeo Void, the band of the super dynamic, lovely and proud not to be skinny Debora Iyall. Excellent choice! Enjoy an interview with Miss Amanda, that we took for Curt Magazine. LS: It's so refreshing to see more and more women getting into rap and hip-hop. Did growing up in Philadelphia have any profound influence? [...]

Meet Jessie Malakouti . Having already established herself as a Xenomania songwriter, opened on tour for The Saturdays , and sung back-up on the Pet Shop Boys ' latest record, Yes , it's hard to say that Malakouti requires an "Introduucing" post. It's her latest musical endeavor, Jessie and the Toy Boys , however, that merits the formal welcoming. As evidenced in the snippets posted on her newly created website , Jessie's got a knack for sugar coated, '80's-inspired electro pop confections; her voice and sound lying somewhere [...]

"High on a Mountain Top" - Loretta Lynn, Van Lear Rose , LP, 2004 For Valentine's Day, I prepared a women-only mix tape for Rebecca. I admit it wasn't the easiest exercise. 34 songs, all performed by women artists or bands with female leads. The mix coincided with R's favorite dance night in D.C. - an all-women-identified DJ night called She.Rex, where the DJs spin tracks by women artists. Not surprisingly, my mix included a hefty helping of new wave and punk tracks by bands like Romeo Void, X-Ray Spex and Siouxsie [...]

Romeo Void - White Sweater MP3

The biggest comeback of this decade hasn't been by any one band, but by the entirety of the 1980s. It's not exactly a news bulletin that the post-punk, new wave and electro that announced itself in the '80s has wielded a huge influence on the current landscape. On Thursday at the Knitting Factory, a nice slice of that decade will reappear — a 415 Records reunion show featuring Wire Train , Translator and Debora Iyall of Romeo Void . Here's a quick history lesson: 415 Records was an independent label in San Francisco [...]

From Philadelphia, Amanda Blank is a breakthrough female hip hop artist. Best known for her musical collaborations with M.I.A., Spank Rock, Diplo, Santigold, Ghostface Killah, and even Britney Spears, Amanda has been adding her own saavy and unique style for years. On August 4, 2009, Amanda Blank released her debut solo album called I Love You, produced by XXXChange and released on Downtown Records. Her first single is Might Like You Better , taking a partial refrain reminiscent from the 1980's [...]

After many years of musical obsession completely removed from a record player, my pile of vinyl now grows incrementally, aided by the quality LP sellers of New York City. Baubles from the treasure chest will be posted here whenever it seems appropriate... Romeo Void was a post-punk/new-wave line-straddling four-piece from San Francisco, whose sole enduring 1982 hit"Never Say Never" also gives name to the EP I poached from the "new arrivals" bin at a local Brooklyn wax merchant. While I fondly remembered the song immediately from name, I [...]
I'm actually early posting this week's mix. Mostly because I'm doing an extra radio show tomorrow-9:30 PM EST at bsrlive.com if you care-and probably won't have time to do this then. The mix mostly sprung from the Stone Roses track because I was reading the chapter about them in the 33 1/3 anthology that came out last fall. Also on this mix: lots of other English men, an original version of a song made popular by the Lemonheads, a cheesy 80's saxophone, and what may be the single silliest song to have [...]

I've restored the links to the most recent posts. I'm using a different file sharing service, so please let me know if you encounter any worries. Ahhh Labor Day, are you here already? I guess it's time put away all my white outfits. Err, wait. I don't actually OWN any white outfits. Hmmm, so I guess I'm safe then. When I was in school we usually looked at Labor Day with dread. After all, if it was Labor Day Weekend then summer was coming to an end and school was right around the corner (when you go to school in a small town and have 'unusual' tastes in film, music & literature, you don't really look forward to going back). Well, school is long [...]

Room with a View, Toronto, 21/11/06 Hello, Dear Friends! I'm back from Back East, and am glad that I am. Oh yes. From a functional perspective, the trip was a success. Business was concluded. Faces were put to names. Nice people were met. Relationships were nurtured, both in office settings and over expense-account meals in chi-chi restaurants. Indeed, I filled my annual red meat quota with some lovely venison at Bistro & Bakery Thuet and a very nice filet mignon at the [...]
Today is National One-Hit Wonder Day in the U.S., though affection for the one-hit wonder isn't unique to the States. Just this month, New Zealand music television station C4 dedicated an episode of its program, U Choose 40 to One Hit Wonders. A viewer poll on the C4 website determined the 40 songs. Viewers were given 60 options, though "write-in votes" could be sent via e-mail. The Kiwis'
