Ron Sexsmith's 2013 album, Forever Endeavour BY JORDAN MAINZER With a name like Sexsmith, how can you not be noticed? Singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith has existed just outside of the popular singer-songwriter circle for virtually his entire career. As trends came and went, Sexsmith relentlessly produced Seventies-ish schmaltzy, Davies, Newman, and Nilsson-like pop songs at a remarkably consistent pace and of remarkably consistent quality, perhaps only bested by someone like Guided By Voices' Robert Pollard. From 20022s excellent (and perhaps career best) Cobblestone Runway to his most recent effort, [...]
I Am Kloot, Ed Harcourt et Ron Sexsmith : les underdogs de la pop sur DLF

Friday afternoon I spent hanging around on Sixth Street, which is probably the best advice I could give anyone attending SXSW for the first time. Four days in and you're tired. You're rough from all the alcohol you've been drinking, and most likely, your body is screaming because it hasn't gotten enough sleep. This year I made a pledge to myself to sleep as much as possible, which worked mostly, except I missed out on the Irish breakfast at Irish pub B.D. Riley's. I had it last year and it [...]
Multi-instrumentalist Aidan Baker performs in the First Unitarian Church Side Chapel tonight. Working both as a solo musician and as a member of Nadja, ARC and Mnemosyne, Baker is an incredibly prolific composer of experimental / drone post-rock and often improvises during live shows. On April 15th Baker will release Already Drowning via Gizeh Records. ... Continue reading
Reunited with Mitchell Froom, the songsmith Sexsmith produces another beguiling release. "I'm a 35-year-old guy from Canada and I don't write groove-oriented music. I can't expect too much," Ron Sexsmith was quoted as saying in 1999, when quizzed on the commercial prospects and potential of his work. Well, Sexsmith is now a 49-year-old guy from Canada who's still not writing groove-oriented music but who's nonetheless proved to be an enduring artist: critically feted, often covered, though not, as he sagely predicted, a household name. That position...

As a follow-up to last year's album "What Kind of World," singer-songwriter Brendan Benson has embarked on a single-per-month project that he plans to wrap with a vinyl release later this year. Benson's January effort, "Swimming," is one of 28 songs on a free SXSW sampler assembled by HGTV and Paste and available through Noisetrade . If you're not fully in the mood for next week's South by Southwest Music Festival (or if you're going to miss it), maybe this mix will help — there are songs from Leagues, City and Colour, Allah-Las, Josh Rouse, Billy Bragg, [...]

Ron Sexsmith is in a difficult spot: Despite his well-structured pop songs and praise from the likes of Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney, his music has been confined to critical darling status. It's a shame, because Sexsmith's music comprises orchestral, Brian Wilson-esque love odes at times, and at others, contemplative, Sea Change- era Beck tunes. His newest album, Forever Endeavour , fuses those elements into an album of tightly-packed pop goodness. Sexsmith is at his best when he doesn't try to do too much. Songs like the jaunty “Nowhere Is” and the slow-rolling “Lost in [...]

Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith is revered among the cognoscenti and rightly so. Forever Endeavour is his 13th album and the first to feature orchestrated stings and woodwinds. Sexmith has demoed the songs for his new album when he ran into producer Mitchell Froom who convinced him to go for a richer sound. Froom had produced four his previous albums and they hit it off immediately, recording at Froom's Santa Monica studio. The new approach could have ruined the intimacy of his songs, but the added instrumentation is an enhancement of the emotions that are flowing through [...]

by Tiana Feng Rating: Release Date: February 5th, 2013 Label: Warner Ron Sexsmith delved into pop territory with Bob Rock (producer of Aerosmith, Metallica) in 20112s Long Player Late Bloomer . While it was an okay album, it was forgettable and lost some of that Sexsmith charm. It was missing honesty and the [...]

The first time I heard Ron Sexsmith 's " These Days " (about a decade ago), I was tucked away in the back room and of a not-to-be-named medical software company. The song (a bit of a departure from his previous works apparently) hit me like a breath of fresh air flowing through the plain manilla air ducting located directly right above my head. Compared to what I was hearing most of the time back then, the stylings of the songs on Cobblestone Runway coupled with Sexsmith's casual way [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Ron Sexsmith Facebook In 2011, Ron Sexsmith raised more than a few eyebrows with Long Player Late Bloomer , a bombastic Bob Rock -produced pop album that put a critical darling into commercial consciousness. Nominated for both the Polaris Music Prize and a Juno, it was a breakthrough album for Sexsmith. The singer/songwriter could have played it safe [...]
IT SOUNDS like songsmith Ron Sexsmith's latest effort, Forever Endeavour, was a labour of love - he really should shout about it. Because the folky Canadian singer songwriter's new album is a bittersweet sounding collection, relaying tales of mortality and of love lost, but not in a melodramatic way. Now Sexsmith's songs are all well-crafted, stripped down, full of clever wordplay and delicate musical ornamentation. The problem here is that because of this soft approach, he rarely grabs the listener's attention - this is highlighted by the few songs where he does, such as adding the New [...]

Yesterday, Dermot O'Leary (pictured above in a turtleneck, naturally) had four lovely singing ladies, dubbed his "Choir of Angels", to spread the holiday cheers on his last radio show before Christmas. Rumer, Ren Harvieu, Emily Baker and Kristina Train (a Radio 2 super girl group right there) joined the host for a chat, then each offered their take on a holiday classic. Disney-noir songstress Ren Harvieu picked Joni Mitchell's not-so-cheery "River" , which she pulled it off beautifully. MP3: Ren Harvieu - River (Joni Mitchell Cover) [...]
