Today I really felt like doing one of those reverse Sample Sundays with Foster's Mystic Brew, but because I've already posted Tribe's Electric Relaxation which samples Mystic Brew on a previews post, I decided to give you guys a list all the tracks I know that sample Foster's epic tune. The list is made up by both Hip-Hop and R&B tracks, each managing to sample the track in a completely unique way. Enjoy Ronnie Foster - Mystic Brew Download audio file (07-Mystic-Brew.mp3) [...]

Download audio file (01-Autumns-Evening-Breeze.mp3 ) The first time we decided to collaborate on a compilation it was for Grimey , which was three volumes of hardcore hip hop. And during the process of selecting songs, we discovered that our individual musical tastes were very similar and complemented each other well. We have some dope compilation ideas for the future but for now we proudly present... All That Jazz Vol. 1. Some of the songs are strictly jazz, while others just have the smooth vibe like "Autumn's Evening [...]

Here's another Tribe Called Quest track that samples some more of those precious Blue Note Records tracks. Now this sample is probably the craziest Tribe sample of all time because not only is it the track that originally got me into Tribe back in the day, but these guys manage to keep the flow on a 3 bar loop track.. meaning the sampled loop is only 3 bars long (1234, 1234, 1234). This shows just how rhythmically talented these fuckers are. Back to the original track, Mystic Brew.... Ronnie Foster is the man when it comes to organ music... and [...]

Spring and summer are the best mornings in life. A bit cool and a bit warm and a bit quiet and a bit alive and full of an easy slice of wonder. Always nice to ease into a day this way. The Tits : Ronnie Foster - Mystic Brew (don lowed) Tripple Nipple : Madlib - Mystic Bounce (don lowed) --

Today it's all about those songs that fall down from the city through the night. Less is Mo... There are many interesting things about Devendra Branhart and you can read a few of them in this Fader interview . Ok, so the dude is eccentric, with the whole penis belt/skirt shit, and megapuss is still cool tho. Still got to bone Natalie Portman for a while... not that I would go out of my way for that. So what I'm saying is, I wouldn't trust him with my girlfriend, but his music does [...]

Some posts can be like the 'Hoff working on a Baconator after hours - slow, difficult, and you sort of lose your appetite halfway through. I was working on this one to showcase Diplo as the classy international tastemaker that he is (obvs), including the sample lineage of a few joints such as Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew" (Ronnie>Tribe>Madlib>Diplo) and Marlena Shaw's "California Soul" as it weaves through DJ Premier in the 90s and back to Dip in 2K times. But that was more than two months ago, so, FAIL. Enjoy these at least. [...]

very cool to see dave post that questlove sample montage earlier today, taken from gilles peterson's radio one program back in 2005...thought i'd one up him though, & post the same mix, only broken up...obviously, audiophiles like dg don't require the extra help, but for the rest of us, the separate tracks make the playlist a little easier to follow...i also included full length versions of a few of my favorites from the mix below, so make sure to check those out as well. download: questlove - the lesson.zip [...]

O contraire, this isn't just any stupid Diplo song, this is a re-working of A Tribe Called Quest's "Electric Relaxation." No Baile funk. No M.I.A. telling you she's going to get your money and then re-distribute it to Third World Orphans Who Want to Learn to Dress Good and Do Other Stuff Good Too. Just a lift of Phife Dawg's, "I like 'em brown, yellow, Puerto Rican and Haitian" line, the sped-up and slick glide of Ronnie Forster's "Mystic Brew," and some fierce, clapping drums. It's called "Brew Barrymore." I know. That doesn't change the fact that it deserves to [...]

Lou Donaldson: It's Your Thing From Hot Dog (Blue Note, 1969)Ronnie Foster: Mystic Brew From Two-Headed Freap (Blue Note, 1972)Both on Droppin' Science (Blue Note, 2008) Back in the mid-1990s, Blue Note Records, astutely noting how popular their catalog was becoming amongst hip-hop producers, began to release a series of anthologies in 1993 called Blue Break Breaks . Each featured about a dozen or so songs that had gotten the sample treatment - the first two or three sets included songs directly from Blue Note but by [...]
