Over ten years ago, millions of pre-teen girls began their crush on a young actor/musician playing prince to Anne Hathaway's princess. Tonight, in a dark bar in Silverlake, Los Angeles, those same girls – now women – are wanting a lot more from that prince than a peck on the cheek... His name is Robert Schwartzman, and he is currently smack dab in the middle of a month's residency at the Satellite, a local venue tucked into the Silverlake hills offering free Monday night resident acts. Schwartzman (formerly of the band Rooney, and of Coppola royalty), has gained [...]
Filed under: Video , Exclusive California Dreamin' Records We've heard plenty of songs about the financial crisis, with singers as rich as Bruce Springsteen declaring their allegiance to the working man. Rarely have we heard a song about the recession from the point of someone who's lost money in the stock market. That's where Rooney frontman Robert Schwartzman comes in: His solo song, "Funny Money," represents that other side with perspective, not [...]

The spring weather has finally arrived here in Toronto. Everywhere you look, people have taken their favourite t-shirts out of storage, are riding their bikes around happily, and are generally in a really good mood. For me, the sunny weather doesn't just involved a change in clothes, but also signals a change in music. While there are some artists that I like to listen to year round, others represent a particular type of weather to me and are only played during specific months. Matt Pond PA and [...]
On the surface, Taylor Locke does not have it rough. He's poster-boy handsome, dispenses guitar licks with the best of ’em and has played with Rooney for a decade or so. But Locke does wear his heart on his sleeve, and there lies the source material for the music of Taylor Locke & the Roughs , his foursome with Chris Price, Joe Seiders and Mikey Perez. Seemingly out of nowhere, the Roughs released two albums in 2010, "Grain & Grape" and "Marathon," and around his duties in Rooney he's spent the better part of the last year spreading his [...]

Voxhaul Broadcast is one Los Angeles’ finer musical offerings who offer up a tight package of bluesy rock with melody and grit. Earlier this year they released “Timing Is Everything” (their debut full-length album which boasts the passionate “Leaving on the 5 th ” and the funky punk of “Cheetah”) and now the boys are taking it out on the road for a co-headlining tour with New Jersey’s pop/rock outfit Ocean Grove and special guest Robert Schwartzman (of Rooney ). Yes, L.A., they have a date just for you: October 23 rd [...]
Rooney frontman hits the ground running with his California sun soaked solo project.
LA loves the power pop/rock of Taylor Locke & the Roughs and you’ll love seeing them for FREE!
We take a look at several up-and-coming acts from this year's Outside Lands that may have been overshadowed by headliners like Arcade Fire and Phish. Their reputations for infectious and enthusiastic live performances is what earned them their time on stage, and also the reason for their surges in exposure after the festival ended less than two weeks ago. Look inside for audio clips.
The Rozzes are a very young band with an extra dose of talent and vigor, similar in mold to recent youthful power-pop successes like Cloud Nothings. Similarly, they possess a musical intellect that presents talent well beyond their years. They are a band to watch closely as they develop into stars. Even if comparisons to [...]

Tweet Here's a bizarre visual stimulant from a guy named Teddy Briggs, who apparently played drums in the original lineup of Rooney, but this has nothing to do with that, though. The song itself is a mix of novelty sing-song/spoken word verses and a droning chillwave-esque chorus, all over the same drum sample. It's interesting, at the very least. The lyrical cadence is off-step, more repetitive than inventive. It's not a rap song, that's for sure. The video is one of the most [...]
Lots and lots to start your weekend: ► Rooney and Voxhaul Broadcast team up at the El Rey Theatre. Rooney's latest batch of power-pop "Eureka" is edgier than their first two albums; Voxhaul's debut "Timing Is Everything" came out in March. ► Black Lips and Cerebral Ballzy bring the party to the Music Box. Black Lips' "Arabia Mountain" is their sixth album. Hard to believe. ► Amy Kuney (that's her video for "Gasoline Rainbows," above) plays the Bootleg Theater. ► [...]
Rooney is back for a local tour date! You can see Rooney in their Los Angeles stop at the El Rey Theatre this Friday, June 24 in support of last year's release, Eureka. Joining Rooney this weekend will be Scenestar...
Your summer soundtrack just got a jump start with The Demos!
The fleeting guitar-pop of The Demos presents itself like a smörgåsbord of indie-rock influences. Pop pioneers like The Beatles and Brian Wilson can be heard in much of today’s music, but the prevalence of contrived imitation over infused creativity now prevents listeners from fully grasping their impact on a variety of pop/rock styles. The Demos’ [...]

I have been a fan of the site Daytrotter for several years now. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Daytrotter, it is a music site that has a little studio they call The Horseshack in downtown Rock Island, IL. They invite bands to stop by in between shows while they are on tour to record a short little session, which is then put up on the site for free download along with a cartoon drawing of the artist and a short essay on the band and their music. Often the sessions are nothing more than spontaneous re-workings of [...]

“Fast-rising soul-pop quartet” (LA Times) VOXHAUL BROADCAST release the first video from their debut full-length, Timing Is Everything as AOL Spinner premieres the video for “Leaving On The 5th” today. Cameron Matthews from Spinner says, “The album's opener, 'Leaving on the Fifth,' is a melodic opus to serendipitous love and chance meetings. The band layers sonically balanced thumping bass behind the icy-hot melody line and singer David Dennis' yearning vocals.” The video for 'Leaving on the Fifth' [...]
The video for Voxhaul Broadcast's single "Leaving on the 5th" was inspired by "Thomas Edison's' ‘Serpentine Dance’ on hand-tinted film," director Ryan Franklin tell Spinner , where the clip debuted today. It works, especially with the song's pin-prick guitar line and grandiose yearning. The L.A. quartet's debut "Timing Is Everything," came out last month after a lot of dues-paying on the quartet's part, and this spring they're getting a chance to back up that titular truth. Voxhaul does a two-week stint this month supporting Rooney, then hops aboard the Airborne Toxic Event's tour for 22 [...]
