OK so any day that features anything pertaining to Rodney Hylton Smith is, in our eyes and ears, a really good day, and this mixtape, compiled by his own moniker Roots Manuva and Banana Klan for the Big Dada gang (who, come July 23, head to the Queen Of Hoxton venue for "Dub College," a [...]
The Herbaliser have been around for a minute. Since 1994 in fact. And, just by being on the legendary Ninja Tune label in London, you know that they have pedigree. Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry have... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
The Ninjatune label is twenty years ago this year, and in September are releasing a slick 6 CD boxset with favorites and rarities. The artwork for the project has been done by openmind. Additionally a book, Ninja Tune: 20 Years of Beats and Pieces written by music journalist Stevie Chick will be available in August. [...]

Yesterday saw Zack de la Rocha's mob of anti-establishment rap metallers Rage Against The Machine stay true to their word, hosting a free(ish) show in North London's Finsbury Park. Bathed in a sea of irony. Not wanting to appear entirely out of place and desperately hoping to come away with at worst a minor hobble, black was to be the order of the day. A Justice For All Metallica T-shirt rescued from the rubble of a post-apocalyptic northern chain of Borders in exchange for shrapnel and pseudo-military boots ought do the trick. Although scrambling through the Gestapo gates [...]
Believe it or not, I actually tried quite hard to avoid making this month's mix too current - starting with Wanda Jackson 's incredible haunting 1961 country/rock "Funnel of Love," as well as including a few 90s tracks that I think are just as good now as they were 15 years ago. RIP ( Gaunt frontman) Jerry Wick . But alas, I couldn't help myself. The Future Islands album is too good not to point out, and "Vireo's Eye" is an example of why I like it so much. I was out of [...]

SAVE BBC ASIAN NETWORK (AND 6 MUSIC TOO) Another delayed post featuring some of my musical favourites from the last few weeks. Hurriedly put up (in unfinished form) simply because its the last chance to fill in the BBC's online questionnaire registering your objection to the closure of The Asian Network & 6 Music. Visit here to register your objection with the BBC Trust (they make the decisions) The Asian Network recently picked up a couple of Sony Awards for its output. Nihal won Best Speech [...]

Dubstep and drum & bass extraordinaire James Boyle, aka Breakage, makes his Essential Mix debut. Hailing from Croyden in the UK, Breakage has been making tunes since the ripe age of eleven. His second album Foundation was recently released on Digital Soundboy, and we highly recommend picking it up. He's also just remixed Florence & The Machine's "Dog Days Are Over". Listen out for tunes from Benga, Skream, Deadmau5, MJ Cole and AC Slater, and click through to check out Breakage's video with Roots Manuva and to see the tracklist. Rage Against The Machine's free victory show in the U.K has some pretty kick-ass openers. Sadly, one of them is not Susan Boyle . RATM is celebrating after their victory for having the number one album at Christmastime last year in the United Kingdom. Their song, "Killing In The Name", sold more copies than X-Factor contestant Joe McElderry's cover of the Miley Cyrus song "The Climb". So who will celebrating on stage at what's been now dubbed The Rage Factor ? The band selected gypsy-rock act Gogol [...]
Realistically, this post could go on forever. I've been a long term lover and admirer of all things Ninja. Ever since I was 10 or 11 years old I've been listening to this label and still... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
Last Christmas, Rage Against the Machine re-gifted its 1992 feel-good single "Killing In The Name Of" into the hearts and homes of families across the United Kingdom. Due in no small part to a yet another Facebook grassroots campaign, RATM wound up selling 502,000 copies of that holiday classic, earning the #1 Christmas single in the U.K., and, as promised by the band, a free show. That's one for the annals, son. Now that show, entitled The Rage Factor , just got a whole ton of icing on that cake, as Gogol [...]

Is this the hardest thing Roots has been on since Witness The Fitness ? I've only given his last couple of albums cursory listens, so perhaps not. It's a right biggun though, that's for sure. He must've summoned up the power of Banana Klan.

"When I drink Tea, It's usually Tetley" The Busking Champions of the South West, Hedluv & Passman are back with that difficult 2nd LP. Having confused/delighted/irritated audiences near and far, from Brazil to a string of 40th birthday parties " Dreckly " is the first taster of their new material. Its everything you'd expect from Hedluv, ie. is it bad, is it good? Have Morris Minor & The Majors reformed? Daft, unabashed and embarrassment free as Hedluv lays his rhymes over Casio keyboard loops. As many people will hate this as love [...]
roots manuva - "inna" It's just over 10 years since Roots Manuva released Brand New Second Hand, and I just wanted to remind people what a great and fine album that was. One of the great things about Rodney Smith is- as this track clearly demonstrates- that he's at his most on point when he's most wandering off-point. Kick ass rhythm track on this one too. Inna... buy brand new second hand brand new [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , UK The concept of the guest appearance is one that virtual band Gorillaz hold dear to their hearts. Their previous albums -- the eponymous debut and 'Demon Days' --- have seen turns from the likes of Happy Monday singer Shaun Ryder and Brit rapper Roots Manuva . Their latest collection, 'Plastic Beach,' is choc full of collaborators including Lou Reed , the Fall 's Mark E. Smith and Mos Def . Now, as [...]

Not content with injecting the streets of Camden with a fair old smattering of acts across the indie spectrum taking in the likes of Teenage Fanclub, The Drums, Dead Meadow and The Chapman Family a splendid shot has just been added to the lethal musical concoction that's sure to crumble a fair few crawlers come May. Leading the line up additions to this year's Camden Crawl are Roundhouse headliners and respective sweethearts of mascara-masked emo pop and girl group major politicians, Lostprophets and, quite bizarrely, Sugababes . Whacked-out American punksters We Are [...]

photo cred: Banksy & Art is my Religion Hailing from South London, Breakage has been throwing down beats for almost a decade. Evolving from d'n'b through to jungle and dubstep, he's shown himself to be an extremely versatile producer and inspiration for London's Scientific drum & bass movement. Lately his work's been more dubstep oriented. Check out his new downtempo [...]
