You Don't Know Me, premiering today at USA Today, is Cash's contribution to the all-star recording of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County , a musical featuring libretto by King, music and lyrics by Mellencamp and production from Burnett. The album is set for a June 4 release. Listen to the song HERE .

First, after being on two different labels for her previous four albums, she signed on with Yep Roc Records, which is based in her native state of North Carolina. Second, Merritt sonically went for a rootsy approach on the new album (which comes out today) [...]

Double lives don’t get much better than John Wesley Harding’s. Billed as John Wesley Harding, he is a folk-pop singer-songwriter boasting a resume of 18 albums and collaborations with members of the Decemberists, Peter Buck, and Rosanne Cash. Under his real name Wesley Stace, he is an award-winning novelist. Just in case your not clued into to this thought I'd post a few videos featuring a trio of great artists from The 78 Project. "The 78 Project is a documentary and recording journey inspired by Alan Lomax and his quest to capture music where it lived throughout the early 20th century. Our project brings the spirit of his work into the present as we pair breakthrough musicians with the songs and the fascinating recording technology of the past. With just one microphone, one authentic 1930′s PRESTO direct-to-disc recorder, and one blank lacquer [...]

I've written about my father several times here on Cover Lay Down, citing him as a friend and fellow folkfan whose companionship I cherish, especially now that I have children of my own. I've written about my wife, too, and my children, when the occasion warranted it. But other than a 2008 feature on Mothers of the Folkworld , we've skipped over Mother's Day for four years running - leaving my own mother conspicuously absent from these virtual pages. If I've avoided taking the time to parse the particulars of our often volatile [...]

With Easter approaching, here's a third mix of songs that relate in some way or another to the Christian faith, following the Saved! 1 and Saved! 2 mixes. The first drew from verious ages and genres of music, the second comprised soul musicians doing God music. This lot comes from rock, folk, country and indie backgrounds. Some artists featured here are devout believers, some are sceptics, some are people one wouldn't necessarily have down as being even remotely religious (Cave, Waits). Most are original songs, a few are covers (for example, Wilco covers Woody [...]

Rosanne Cash: Forty Shades of Green [ purchase (Johnny Cash original) ] The song "Forty Shades of Green" is not native to Ireland. Arkansas-born Johnny Cash, of English and Scot descent, wrote it in the United States, after returning from a 1959 visit to the Emerald Isle. In his travelogue, Cash recalls the sights of Ireland and the lyrical town names he encountered -- among them Dingle, Donaghadee, Skibbereen and Tipperary. That Cash is a visitor, rather than a native, is underscored as he recalls, "The breeze is sweet as Shalimar." [...]
