Things I would do immediately if elected president: 1.) Deport Bob Costas, preferably to someplace really unpleasant. His smarminess at the Olympics reflects badly on all of us. A vote for me (in a fictional presidential election) would be a vote against Bob Costas, professional douchebag. 2.) Posthumously appoint Richard Prior as Minister of Education. (Gainin' on ya!) 3.) Buy several more suits, hopefully at a steep presidential discount. You've got to look right for those state dinners and what not. 4.) Use Pentagon slush fund to buy (wait for [...]

Ra Ra Riot 's singer Wes Miles and Vampire Weekend 's keyboardist/guitarist/singer Rostam Batmanglij combined their indie rock/pop musical powers to create Discovery , a quasi-grungy electronic side project. Discovery's "LP" came out over the summer and included, reportedly by coincidence, a cover of Michael Jackson 's (ok, the Jackson5's) "I want you back." When the weird one died, Discovery boomed. That said, I think the attention is relatively well deserved. Their music fit the lingering heat of summer perfectly, and I continue to tap my toes to their beats amidst this thunder/lightening/rain [...]

Vampire Weekend bring down the house in the Bronx

Two GSL writers go head to head and review the new Vampire Weekend.

Vampire Weekend open up about their influences, opinions and process in creating their newest album, "Contra," in these recently released Song Notes.

Is it Vampire Weekend time again?

Today earmilk says hello to Discovery , an electro pop and R&B duo. Discovery is the brainchild of Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles . XL records released a debut LP entitled LP back in July (sorry for the lateness). The album also features Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, and Angel Deradoorian of the Dirty Projectors. The songs are really fun to listen to and make dope summer jams (once again, sorry). Rostam and Wes find a way to mesh their inner 90's R&B artist with their [...]

I was going to post the original version of Can You Tell but I ran into this forgotten gem of a remix while looking for the MP3 soI decided to make it the subject of this post. Can You Tell was one of my favorite '08 songs, it's a simple love song dealing with those initial jitters you get when first falling in love with someone… You know how you question everything you do, everything feels on edge. Are you showing to much interest? Playing it too cool? This is so amazing - do I even [...]

So the Discovery LP officially dropped today. Hooray. It's all autotune wonderful. If you don't know who Discovery is, it's the glorious side project of Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend . I know most of you probably have the majority of the album from the leaked songs BUT if you purchase it through Amie Street then $2 goes to Oxfam America , a relief and development organization. Good cause and some good music... So Insane ( zshare ) [...]

My album reviews this summer have been mostly fantastic. The music is, not my amateur writing. The Dirty Projectors , Major Lazer , Phoenix, the list goes on of phenomenal summer albums. I use the term "summer" not only due to their summer release, but because of their youthful nature, their sensational charm, and their downright fun dynamic. I bring all of this up because Discovery , the side project of Vampire Weekend genius Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot frontman Wes Miles. It's a hell of a lineup for a two man group, but Discovery doesn't [...]

What do you do after your band blows up and critics can't stop fawning all over you? Shrug off the hype and start a synth-pop project, of course. As their bands climbed to one of the higher rungs of the indie-rock ladder, Vampire Weekend's keyboardist/producer Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles were working on music on the down low, and it's morphed into an album project called Discovery . Their hard work has resulted in a self-titled debut, which is out on July 7th, that sounds nothing like the aforementioned bands as the duo opted to forge [...]

Taking some time off from touring, Vampire Weekend has headed back into the studio to record their sophomore LP. The band has been recording in Brooklyn and are shooting for a release this upcoming September. Vampire Weekend has finished up writing all the material for the new record, and told the premier music outlet Entertainment Weekly that Rostam Batmanglij, the band's keyboardist, will be producing the studio sessions. "For the last month or so, it's just been us by ourselves in this small [...]

Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend has teamed up with Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot to create Discovery . Available here for download is "Osaka Loop Line" and you can listen to "Orange Shirt" on the band's MySpace page, the only other tune available for listening. While "Osaka Loop Line" has some interesting twinkling computer effects going on, the synthetic beats, vocal distortions don't really do much for me. Overall I find this track as bland as I find Vampire Weekend's live show. I [...]

Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend has teamed up with Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot to create Discovery . There are only two tracks up on their MySpace right now, but they say they're "COMING HARD AT YOU IN 2009!" This track, Osaka Loop Line , is quite different from the other, Orange Shirt , which has a more Ra Ra Riot put through an R.Kelly R&B wringer. Probably just the result of the two [...]

To start this post off right, I'd like to share some advice I gave someone when she was complaining about how insanely difficult one of her summer professors is. The conversation and subsequent advice is detailed below for your enjoyment. " Hey ." "Hey!" "This class and the homework is impossible ! I've been working on it all day ! This is ridiculous ! What should I do?" "Well, if he's nice, set your apartment on fire and tomorrow in class complain about being [...]
Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album and an equally solid U.S. tour , Vampire Weekend have been laying low. Well, besides the current European tour and recent announcements that the they will be partaking in the upcoming Treasure Island and Rogers Picnic music festivals, but lets just pretend for arguments sake. In other words, the New York natives have plenty of times to bestow us with a new demo and thanks to keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij's myspace , we recently were graced with a [...]

The blogger-mandatory track post that Chris Walla didn't get around to yesterday was this cut of "Campus" in its pre- Vampire Weekend form (and so we fired Chris Walla). The song credit goes to Rostam Batmanglij (The Crazy Scarf Loving One), who also gets mentions in the press for arranging the string sections that pop up on his band's debut album, on songs like this and "M79." The original version reveals itself to be a gentle and string-bathed lilt, with soft vocals to match the sweep. It has all the charm of a lazy sunny day of [...]
Ok, not technically Vampire Weekend, but rather VW's always-bescarfed Rosty Batman Gigli , and his soloey version of "Campus." Matthew posted the track today @ Fluxblog , where he remarked on what a nice song it was, and went on to observie that "Vampire Weekend are basically the Ivy League's answer to Sublime." ::: Rostam Batmanglij - Campus :::
