It's that time of year, bloggers are making end-of-year lists and record labels are putting out compilations from the past 12 months. Rough Trade are the first off the mark, signing off 2011 with a free MP3 sampler of their releases throughout the year. It's a pretty tasty 12-track mix including the likes of The Strange [...]

The Smiths Louder Than Bombs 1987 Sire Hands down this is probably the weirdest tape that I own. I came across someone’s entire collection of Smiths tapes a while back and bought them all because, even though I own them all on LP, it was like what the fuck? It’s a no brainer right, I mean it’s like a no duh situation because it’s THE SMITHS, you just got to have it. Whatever though. I originally intended to use these as visual artifacts more than actual audio documents. However, when my girlfriend [...]

Rolling Stone premiered the new Howler video 'Back Of Your Neck' yesterday. Howler are a 5-piece band out of Minneapolis that have been cashing in on some big time sounds. They have their full-length debut album America Give Up set for release on Rough Trade Records on January 17th, 2012. 'Back Of Your Neck' is the lead single to the debut album and the video was directed by friend of the band, Robert Semmer. Howler frontman, Jordan Gatesmith reminds me of a young Julian Casablancas in sound and looks. [...]
27-year-old British songwriter Johnny White aka Fairewell has released his debut record 'Poor, poor grendal' via Sonic Cathedral Recordings (pick up the record through Rough Trade and you'll get a bonus disc with a few extra tunes). Johnny has previously released material as the Rollercoaster project and also plays with punk band Tesco SS but this offering is the sum of more than three years work! Echo Lake have remixed the lead single 'Born Under A Bad Sign' and extends Fairewell's shopping trip theme into even darker territory. This remix isn't on the album but the [...]

Robert Wyatt Nothing Can Stop Us 1986 Gramavision A lot of kids think that the whole 80’s British art school scene was all about the Cure and hairspray, but if you want to really get down to some brass tacks, no non-sense business then this is probably more where it’s at. [...]

When they stopped by Rough Trade's office in London recently , Alela Diane and husband/guitarist Tom Bevitori found themselves in the basement performing an impromptu version of the appropriately titled "Long Way Down." (You see, basement? Long way down?... Oh, forget it.) The song is a highlight of their recent album Alela Diane & Wild Divine , with Bevitori singing co-lead through the entire thing. This fine stripped-down version is the second installment of Rough Trade's Basement Tapes series. Diane, Bevitori and the Wild Divine band are currently wrapping up a European tour opening for [...]
