by kevin diamond David Byrne is one of the longest-lasting loves of my music fan-boy life. He was the leader of one of my favorite bands of all time ( Talking Heads ), he wrote my favorite song ( "This Must Be The Place" ), starred in my favorite concert film ( Stop Making Sense ), wrote AND directed my favorite quasi-musical staring John Goodman and 50 pairs of midgets (The vastly underrated True Stories ); on top of all this, he comes across as one of the [...]

a bunch of badical dudes in a band called Avalon recently sent us some muzak which was tres cool.. especially considering it was so damnnn good on their myspace, they proudly proclaim their genre as 'Melodramatic Popular Song'. after a few listens however, i decided that they actually sit comfortably somewhere between the Midnight Juggernauts , Phoenix and The Presets with their own brand of sometimes laidback/sometimes dancey electro/indie beats.. Avalon - Prescription Aria i think the strength of their new [...]

"Since I grew tired of the chase and search, I learned to find; and since the wind blows in my face, I sail with every wind." - Friedrich Nietzsche "If the wind will not serve, take to the oars." - Latin Proverb "If a man does not know what port he is steering for, no wind is favorable to him" - Seneca "Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it." - Winston Churchill "There's no need to fear the wind if your haystacks are tied down." - Irish Proverb [...]

BigSteve wrote me offlist regarding the little discussion around Roxy Music's "Angel Eyes": Here is the disco version of "Angel Eyes" , if you want to post it to the blog. It's amusing enough in its own way, but it can't hold a candle to what I think of as the "real" version of the song. And I think it destroys the momentum of the first side of Manifesto . Here's the version he speaks of, the one that's now the standard version on all CD versions [...]

Back in April I mentioned that Brian Eno and David Byrne had finished their second collborative effort and planned to tour late in 2008. The album, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today will hit the virtual shelves as DRM-free MP3's on the 18th of August, and a tour will follow it. This is amazing and LONG over-due. (Their only other collaboration, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts , was released over 20 years ago now.) David Byrne and Brian Eno - Strange [...]

Today is NASA's 50th birthday . This may not be strictly music-related, but when I was a kid I would have been pretty content to be an astronaut. In fact, my parents put up a moonscape on one of my walls when I was about 7 years old (yes, I was and still am, a nerd). In honor of this fact, I thought I'd assemble some of my favorite, space-themed tunes. I applied 'space-themed' a little loosely, but I'm sure you'll forgive me. Here's a track taken from the frankly awful Bowie biopic 'Velvet Goldmine'. Thought this was kinda relevant as two of the people involved are now producing the biggest albums around. Brian Eno (who wrote it) has just done the new Coldplay record and Bernard Butler (who plays on it) is riding high in the charts with Duffys record. The Venus in Furs were a band made up for the film and consisted of Radiohead's Thom York and Jonny Greenwood, Suede's Bernard Butler, Roxy Music's Andy Mackay and David Gray. Pretty stellar cast (apart from David Gray). [...]

I watched Sofia Coppola's modern masterpiece on loneliness and love, 'Lost In Translation' again this week(God bless hulu.com) and that movie gets better with each additional screening. And the use of music in that film is just top notch, from start to finish. The karaoke scenes alone are all-timers! That is all...just reminiscing out loud here Roxy Music - 'More Than This' MP3 Elvis Costello - 'Peace, Love, And Understanding' MP3 [...]

Roxy Music : Angel Eyes [ purchase ] Manifesto was Roxy Music's sixth studio album and came after a hiatus of several years that saw lead singer, Brian Ferry, release two successful solo records. Angel Eyes was the third single from the album, which was minus former members Paul Thompson (drums) and Eddie Jobson (synthesizer/violin) and supplemented by session players Andy Newmark, Neil Hubbard, and Alan Spenner. This resulted in a distinct change in the band's sound, which shifted to a more middle-of-the-road musical arrangement. IMO, Roxy [...]

TODAY'S ADDENDUM: Song: 2HB by Venus in Furs (with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood) Release Date: November 1998 Find This: "Velvet Goldmine" Soundtrack Additional Info: I've spoken before about the soundtrack to the 1998 film "Velvet Goldmine" (directed by Todd Haynes of "I'm Not There" fame), which has a dynamite collection of artists on it from Placebo to Brian Eno to Shudder to Think to Roxy Music to T. Rex and Pulp. But the most notable contributions to the soundtrack, I think, [...]

Dance Crazes That Never Caught On A good dance craze, ideally, has an eponymous song to go with it. But only a few have stood the test of time and have been retained in the hearts and, well, soles of the American public. A good dance-craze party (e.g. wedding) should include a few fab hits like the Twist, the Locomotion, The Walk Like an Egyptian, and, yes, probably the Chicken Dance. Avoid the Macarena unless your party is full of nerds who would be totally into that sort of thing. But, after you've twisted, [...]
The mix tape (note: tape, as in cassette) was, like the dot-com boom: a phenomenon I'm glad I lived through. The art of the mix is still alive (and revived, thanks to Muxtape), but since the dawn of the mp3 player and mp3 CDs, the art has suffered somewhat. We get songs from each other, but in large bunches, and with shuffle, the chances that someone is going to listen to the mix in the order

Roxy Music's 1973 single "Pyjamarama" is amazing, full stop. It is two minutes and fifty-two seconds of absolute musical brilliance that leaves one frustrated and craving more as the song fades into its ending. Originally released as a b-side to promote the For Your Pleasure album, "Pyjamarama" wasn't included on the record but did it reach #10 on the UK singles chart. The majesty of first chord in this condensed classic sets the stage. Demanding attention from listeners, it delivers on its end of the bargain by presenting a playful song [...]
