There was a tribute show in honor of the late singer, with bands and artists performing songs written by Roy Orbison. Barbara Orbison , sons Alex and Roy Jr. along with 19 new artists and friends from around the world celebrated the life and music of one of music's biggest legends. [...]

Chris Isaak's self-titled second record from 1986 was a revelation to me, a voracious 15 year old music fan always on the hunt for new sounds. In this case it was an old sound delivered by the smoothest dude I had ever heard.

We ease into springtime mode (and SXSW in Austin) with this fine new album from Raul Malo, Lucky One. This is the first album of original material from the Mavericks front man in about eight years, and fans of the big guy with the big voice won't be disappointed. The songs wheel from country thumpers ("Lonely Hearts") to swing with a little Latin flavor ("Moonlight Kiss"). Produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, the songs on Lucky One get a big boost from inventive arrangements and fine instrumentation (including Raul himself on guitar). Malo is huge among Americana (alt-country, [...]
Hold Time , M. Ward 's seventh full length album, was released today, although if Ward were to commandeer a time machine to 1958 and release it then, it's likely no one would recognize him as an interloper. The album is a sonic throwback on every level. It's full of reverb-heavy Fender Stratocaster guitar work, and thematically, it captures the wide-eyed innocence of mid-century Americana. Imagine being a '50s era teenager from a tiny farm town falling in love for the first time. Hold Time would be the soundtrack [...]

Findlay Brown dropped his first album a few years ago. I hadn't heard about it, and I'm not sure that anyone else had either, but he's back for round two, and this time I'm listening. It's titled Love Will Find You , and while I can't compare it to his earlier work, I can tell you that it's a heck of a lot 50's doo-wop meets Roy Orbison . Yea, you read that right, Findlay would make a damn fine Orbison tribute singer. I almost wish he had covered Pretty Woman on the album, but [...]

In this very emotional edition of Cover-licious, I pay tribute to those salty droplets of water that only love could have summoned. The tears of love, the only ones that really matter. Crying - Roy Orbison I had to include Roy Orbison's beautiful original of this song. His powerful voice is so full of emotion in this song that you believe that he was feeling that pain each time he sang this song. There is no other like [...]
Filed under: Twisted Tales Spinner.com : Roy Orbison's exquisite voice was the sound of hard luck and shattered hopes. He had the sound first, on such pop-opera masterpieces as 'Crying,' 'In Dreams' and 'Only the Lonely.' The actual heartaches came later. Like his good friend Johnny Cash,... Read more
We've come to rely on Bruce Springsteen so much for his meditations on the state of the world as seen through the eyes of the hardscrabble characters in his songs that it's quite a shock that his new album sounds so happy.

This is it. The real list, plus some albums which missed out. Worst Albums of 2008 That I Own Konk - The Kooks Emergency - The Pigeon Detectives The Script - The Script Notable But Not Quite Good Enough Feed the Animals - Girl Talk An interesting album, and it's great you can download it for free, but Girl Talk's style is too ADHD. He has some incredible ideas, Red Hot Chili Peppers mixed with Lil' [...]

The concert film appears to be a dying art form, one that has fallen out of favor with audiences and directors alike as people continue to evolve their definition of how much money good music is "worth". Perhaps this is just a temporary trend? Let's hope so, lest the majority of music fans around the world miss out on future performances such as those listed below. Here are EAR FARM's Top 20 Concert Films of All Time... 20. Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars (directed by [...]

This is a list of Christmas songs. This list is an antidote to people who think the intersection of Christmas and rock music begins with "Jingle Bell Rock" and ends with "Run, Run Rudolph". This is a list of bands that you know - and might even care about - either chiming in with their own particular contribution to the Christmas canon, or, in a two cases, mangling a done-to-death Christmas classic beyond recognition. This is a list which hopefully assuages those for whom one more spin of "Santa Claus is Coming [...]
In the late 1970s, Johnny Cash hosted a Christmas Special each year, and pitchfork has decided to host a couple of their favorite moments the show. I really enjoyed them and I am sure you will too. Here is a great version of Silent Night, performed by Johnny and his wife June Carter. Here is the great gospel tune "This Train is Bound for Glory" performed by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Carl Perkins. The late, great Andy Kauffman showing off his expertise by doing Elvis Presley's [...]
