With the horizon of a new year seemingly inches away, we're proud to present our best songs of 2011. We have been slaving over albums and hidden tracks for the past month, but now the beginning of our five-part list of the best of the best. 50. The Airborne Toxic Event - Half of Something Else Very similar to 20082s "Sometime Around Midnight", TATE is back with a similar formula and not a bad album either. I guess if you've got the chemistry down, why change it? 49. Radiohead [...]

It's not every night you get three solid bands in one gig. The long-awaited return of We Were Promised Jetpacks with openers Royal Bangs and Bear Hands at The Music Box proved that it can happen. The last time the Scottish lads of WWPJ performed in L.A. was at The Troubadour two years ago. You could tell most of the crowd at The Music Box was at that show and waiting to hear songs from their debut album These Four Walls . However, Adam Thompson (lead vocals, guitar), Michael Palmer (guitar), Sean Smith (bass) and Darren Lackie (drums) had [...]

Thank you to all of the current and past veterans out there today. It's a remarkable sacrifice you've made, and your efforts to protect and support the U.S. are appreciated. Across the world, we celebrate Armistice Day as well. Hopefully, we can move toward a global society that relies on diplomacy and not war to settle its disputes. As today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of this new millenium, we're re-posting Blogophilia 11. So, if you havent already, download it and crank it to 11. Look for Friday's Free [...]
What's in a name when you're Scottish rockers with a post-punk bend?
Click here to view the embedded video. MP3: Grass Helmet Monday night, Knoxville's Royal Bangs comes to Skullys as part of their month-long fall tour. Circa 2007, the boys dropped by Cafe Bourbon St. as new signees of Audio Eagle Records . They put on a great show, and the five song EP they sold me was 22 minutes of solid gold. Since then, Royal Bangs has continued to hone their studio craft and tour consistently, steadily building their name from [...]

Scottish band We Were Promised Jetpacks have played in DC twice before, but this was their largest headlining show to date. Along with them were two bands they were very familiar with – bands they've toured with before, but on the other side of the country: Bear Hands from New York and Royal Bangs from Texas. I thought they were unusual choices, given that both of these bands play with keyboards and synths, whereas We Were Promised Jetpacks has the basic rock 'n' roll line-up of guitars, bass, and drums. The [...]

These mixes were posted in January and February 2010, the winter of our discontent. Seriously, the blog was on life support during this time. We're through that storm now. 2010 was such a great year for music, and these early mixes show why. Many of the tracks were available in late 2009, but appeared on 2010 releases. Tracks are from late October through late November 2009 Gapless mix ripped at 256k VBR. Download all tracks in one zip file [...]

And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]

It's time to listen to a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. These are just a few of the songs that would get their own individual posts here on GIMME TINNITUS if I only had the time. You can stream all the songs in this mix using the Yahoo media player at the bottom of the page OR if you are browsing with Chrome you can play (and scrobble ) the whole page using the ex.fm extension OR you [...]

Photograph by Sabrina Diemert Toronto's North by Northeast - or NXNE - is the younger cousin and orienteering opposite of the behemoth Austin music extravaganza South by Southwest. Over its 17 years, the festival has swollen to 7 days of concerts (ranging from cozy church acoustic sets to sprawling punk moshing at Yonge and Dundas Square), films (mostly music-centric documentaries, including this year's highly touted Better Than Something: Jay Reatard ) and interactive conferences (if you were a musician and could get advice from Brian Wilson, wouldn't you?). As with any event attempting to [...]

It's been a long while since I've posted a Sunday Radio Dick feature, which usually required hours of prep work for me each week. I'm feeling a little energetic rolling into Sunday, so I'll throw down with an old school Radio Dick - our long-time readers know how these roll. For those new to the garden party, it's essentially a weekly roundup of some tracks that either 1) garnered plenty of newsworthy hype - warranted or not, or 2) were missed by me throughout the week. I consider this the arena to sort of lob tracks at [...]

Tweet COOLRUNNINGS ' weird lo-fi tangent jams get an uplifting treatment by percussionist Meg Thomas on this demo released on Dracula Horse's Soundcloud. Known for making slightly off-the-wall music they do a pretty decent job of bringing that mix together in an offbeat cohesive way. Their latest album "Dracula Is Only The Beginning", whilst not exactly selling like a new Coldplay album might, was still well-received by almost anyone's ears who came in contact with it. The whole thing [...]

For Stomp and Stammer : Royal Bangs Flux Outside [Glassnote] Though perhaps no other moment on the record can equal the frenetic, harried energy of the leadoff track, Flux Outside , the third LP from Knoxville's Royal Bangs, barrels relentlessly straight through to its finish. "Grass Helmet," the aforementioned leadoff, peaks the record early with its stuttering percussion, screeching sound effects and emphatic vocals. It's a slap in the face of all navel-gazing, nonchalant delivery, and it's one the trio performs without [...]
Referrals are a big deal in the music industry. Trust is also a big deal if these referrals are to be of high quality. You hear your friend say she enjoys a band, and since you trust her taste in music, you decide to give them a listen. Voila! You have a new band to...
