Monday, March 31, 2008 It took me an eternity to get around to it, but last night I finally attended my first Rollergirl match down at the Austin Convention Center. It was the Holy Rollers vs the Hellcats, and it was quite an awesome bout with both teams keeping it close until the 4th quarter, where the latter of the two committed a few too many crucial penalties and fell behind. I honestly can't wait until another match comes up. To celebrate my overwhelming approval of women on roller skates I put [...]

Royal Bangs ' Let's Get Even (mp3) is an imaginative, hyperspasmodic jumble of guitar, stuttering machine noise, and various squeaks and bursts, with an artful mid-song deconstruction and resolution, before it just plain disintegrates perfectly at the very end.

Royal Bangs release debut "We Breed Champions" May 13 Laser-fueled turbo popsters Royal Bangs are releasing their debut full-length, " We Breed Champions " on Audio Eagle on May 13th. New Wax You can always count on Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney to release some quality garage-rock on his Audio Eagle Records label. With the edition of Knoxville, Tennesee's Royal Bangs, the label finds itself looking outside of its home state of Ohio for talent. Originally self-released by the band in 2006, We Breed Champions is filled with blissfully sloppy lo-fi indie rock that combines pop sensibility with loud, angular guitar riffs and loosely smashed drums. As far as comparisons for comparison's sake, the [...]

Knoxville, Tennessee's Royal Bangs may be the first artist outside of the Buckeye State signed to Akron's Audio Eagle Records, but they aren't entirely out of place on their new home. They share their label-mate Houseguest's quirkiness and offbeat sense of humor, and label head Patrick Carney's affinity for old style garage rock. "Broke Calculator" from the forthcoming We Breed Champions, provides a prime example of this combination with its easy rhythm and a vocal drawl reminiscent of The Strokes or The French Kicks, and a chorus featuring some keys that sound as if someone spilled a Diet [...]
