In a bit of a twist, this compilation encompasses both December and January. The "Best Albums of 20093 featured last month was a lot of fun, as was the three-week break I took after it was published. I am always exhausted after that feature every year, but I still used the vacation time to discover [...]

I feel like the 90's was loaded with long lost great singles, though I'd have a tough time convincing The Giant Panther of this. I was digging deep while watching football this afternoon to come up with something unusual that might jog some memories this evening and the band Ruby came to mind. This band is so forgotten that I haven't even put it on my hard drive yet. Now I am forced to. I'm trying like hell to give you guys quality MP3 files for your iPods (320 KPS), but it's not always possible. Sometimes I put the band's [...]

The Bay Area may not have a single unified scene, but its diverse musical communities produced a ton of acclaimed records in 2009. The following list collects thirty-two of the highlights that made this another banner year for Bay Area indie music. It's a collection that showcases the depth of Bay Area indie in 2009, and one suspects that few other regions have offered this volume of quality releases this year. A couple of qualifiers: This isn't a comprehensive list of excellent local records from 2009 or intended as any sort of official Bay Bridged [...]

In preparing some end-of-the-year features that will run over the next week, we were once again struck by how many Bay Area bands made a significant impact on indie music this year. We were pleased to sit down with some of the Bay Area's best this year for interviews on our podcast, and have collected music from 10 of our favorite interviewed bands for this recap episode. If you like what you hear, check out our podcast episodes spotlighting each of these bands. This will be our last podcast of the year, but we'll be continuing [...]

Have you listened to Sawdust yet? You know, I once had a theory. The best songs are on the B side. I even got a customized license plate: B SIDE. But in the digital age it is hard to notice when a B side is actually offered on a single, let alone an album. And when a "B sides" album is released, we are conditioned now to view it with a skeptical "what are they trying to market at me now" eye. The Killers [...]
Music and tums are true post-Thanksgiving delights. As the latter appeases our stomachs after binges of food and drink, music soothes us with its accessibility and lack of commercialism. TV and radio become tiresome with all those Black Friday advertisements and we all arrive at a point where familial small-talk becomes grueling. Music is an [...]
It is risky to tackle a style that fuses several aspects of an overlooked past, particularly in regard to stylistic movements that took place decades ago. This was a time before our generation's fascination with excess took hold on all forms of media. Popular music has always aligned with the cultural times and the [...]

Rubies create music that is a mix of danceable folk, bedroom disco, and lost love laments, as showcased by stand out tracks "I Feel Electric," "Stand in a Line," "Diamonds on Fire," "The Truth and The Lies," and "Room Without a Key." Think Human League meets Chromeo... their most recent release, Explode From The Center , was co-produced by Rubies and Karl-Jonas Winqvist (Blood Music, First Floor Power) and features guest appearances from Winqvist, Eirik Glambek-Bøe (Kings of Convenience), Maria Eriksson (The Concretes), Feist, Dan Judd (Sorcerer), and Lars Skoglund (Lykke Li & Peter, Bjorn & John). Those behind on their Daytrotter sessions should be aware that a few hometown heroes were recently featured on the website. Two new sessions from Still Flyin' and Deerhoof were released in August, and Still Flyin' offered an unreleased track, "Runaway Train II." Be sure to check out the rest of the session, and as always, the tracks are available for download. Still Flyin' - "Runaway Train II" Also, I came across some San Francisco show footage on Daytrotter's front page, including a clip of Bob [...]

CRECD197 was released during hugely successful times for Creation Records , an era during the mid 90`s where Oasis , Ride and Primal Scream were selling record numbers of units for fun. Artists like Teenage Fanclub , My Bloody Valentine and The Boo Radleys were forming iconic Indie fan bases before the sad demise of Britpop towards the end of the `90`s. A very good time indeed for Creation Records, in fact a tidy era for most British music on the whole. Love or loathe him, Alan McGee [...]

I set my laptop on record when me and my boys were rehearsing the other night. Here's the video of my song Diamonds from my album Jonestown , and Ruby, Don't take your love to town , originally written by Mel Tillis but best known through Kenny Rogers.
