Coming up with a list of ten great songs is significantly more difficult than coming up with a list of ten great albums for the simple reason that a study of the most basic mathematics suggests that songs usually outnumber albums by about 50 to 1. (OK, I randomly pulled that number out of a hat but I think that I've made my point...) Unlike last year's list however, there was no one song that really stood out above the rest for me. Therefore all eleven songs this year are basically tied for first place and the basic thing that [...]
Its December already and I have compiled my list of shows of 2008. I know its early to list them Its up on the tab under " Best of 2008 ". While I still need to work on albums and singles of 2008. Honourable mention in no particular order: Westfest 2008 . Great to see Grand Analog, Land Of Talk, Matthew Barber, Kyrie Kristmanson and Joel Plaskett Emergency with Peter Elkas. Handsome Furs - August 23, 2008 at Mavericks [...]

Who : Ruby Coast from Aurora, Ontario. What : Not to be confused with Canada's The Coast or the Ruby Suns from the New Zealand, here's Aurora, Ontario's Ruby Coast . Sounding like Jangly-indie rock in the vein of Born Ruffians and Tokyo Police Club , they've most recently put together a 6-song EP (Produced by Dave Monks of TPC ) that will probably get you moving. Will it sound like something completely new? No. More of like a comfort [...]

Sifting through the dozens of emails in the BTA inbox, I came across EX~PO . Central Meaner Street is the second collection of tracks by Dean Marino . After reading Marino's bio, I couldn't help, but have the utmost respect for him. EX~PO's frontman/mastermind is a seasoned producer/engineer/studiohead. His resume lists work with Tokyo Police Club , Born Ruffians , C'mon , Amy Millan , and BTA friends Ruby Coast . I am always intrigued by what career producer/engineers are able to produce on the other side of the studio. Marino proves [...]
I usually let Wade take care of Canadian stuff but today I decided to write up a quick post about Ruby Coast, a great indie pop/rock band hailing from Ontario. While sifting through the Panic Manual mailbag I came across an email about Ruby Coast describing them 'a 5-piece jangly indie rock band from the suburbs of Toronto'. Well I likes me some jangle and do enjoy visiting Toronto suburbs (Brampton son, what?) so I proceeded to download promo EP and you know what? It is good fun. Musically Ruby Coast have that distinct Canadian [...]

Ruby Coast Genre: Indie / Pop From: Aurora, Ontario Canada What is it about Canada? One of the only countries in the world to have escaped the ravages of the "worldwide" (copyright G Brown, 10 Downing Street) financial meltdown and it's become the worlds conveyor belt for unknown, unheard, unseen, unheralded and downright unbelievable bands. If the Devil Has The [...]

As I mentioned in my last post, last Friday I (Heart) Music had posted the annual Hottest Bands In Canada list. I gave a few comments about my choices and omissions, etc. but after noticing that Mike at For The Records put up his personal choices, well, copycat that I am, I figured that I'd do the same. Each of us who contributed to the list were basically given only two rules: the bands had to be Canadian, and they had to have a particularly "hot" year. We were aloud to define [...]

Frank Yang This trend of released expanded and remastered versions of just-released records has got to stop. Newmarket moppets Ruby Coast just released their debut EP of peppy, Clap Your Hands Say Tokyo Police Club-ish indie pop earlier this Spring and already, they're giving it a spit and polish and putting it out again, but with a name this time - Projectable Collections - and just in time for holiday gift giving... Actually, the official line is that the original release was a rush job in order to get something out [...]
Ruby Coast call Aurora, Ontario, home, but their horizons stretch further than the 401, and their appeal is broader than the 905. Take the choicest elements from Born Ruffians, Tokyo Police Club, and Islands and desert them on a desert island; the resulting new society would sound amazingly like Ruby Coast. In fact, Tokyo Police Club front man Dave Monks produced the band's debut EP, Projectable Collections . It's six tracks are sprinkled with indie pop pixie dust, and tempered by some finely honed playing. There ain't a stinker in the lot, and [...]

myspace Saturday shows a lot of big names doing their thing in Halifax. Islands, Sebastian Grainger, Basia Bulat and Brian Borcherdt (of Holy Fuck fame). Lots to choose from obviously, but one band you should check out is the young upstarts from Ontario, Ruby Coast. We were smitten with their home recorded EP and was happy to see them starting to tour in support of their new Projectable Collections EP. So, how does the new release stack up? What was that song those Grease kids sang in school... [...]

It was EPIC. I have a friend that attends York University, and she invited me to be her guest at their concert this year. I'm so glad I'm her friend. Much love to you, Vee! I'm still so psyched about this show that I'm gonna spread the love and pepper this post with mp3s, and videos and photos that I TOOK MYSELF. Ha! It's a fuckin' smorgeshboard of awesome! Ruby Coast . They take to the stage with the air of a [...]

Well it took a while, but Indianapolis band Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos finally made their way to Toronto and I, for one, am glad to have made it out to The Horseshoe on Wednesday night to check it out. My introduction to the band goes all the way back to 2005 or so when I was first getting all enthused about discovering new artists via the world of podcasts. Their song Quiet As A Mouse was being played all over the podosphere, and I found its combination of new wave pop sensibility [...]

Photo by Frank Yang Call it a bait and switch of the best kind. Saturday night's soiree at Sneaky Dee's was billed as a Miracle Fortress show - perfectly logical, considering last year's Polaris finalist had the highest profile of the four bands on the bill, and were certainly the draw for me who hadn't seen them since Pop Montreal last year . But upon arrival, it was revealed the final two acts had swapped slots, and that the Fortress of Miracles would be the penultimate act while Graham Van [...]

If you're at all up on the local Ontario music scene, then you're likely already familiar with this Aurora based infectious five piece. Their bio compares them with Tokyo Police Club , Vampire Weekend and Born Ruffians . I'll admit that it was that particular tag that prevented me from pumping them into my stereo as early as many of my peers did, simply because honestly, if you want to get noticed in the blog world, who else are you going to compare yourself to? I find it hard to harness enough of an inner 15 [...]
(Independent, 2008) It's taken me a while to get around to writing about this great EP by Ruby Coast , but with NXNE , work, moving...blah, blah, blah-excuses, excuses. In any case, omniscient blogger extraodinaire, History Jen , has been on my case about these guys ever since I met her in person at the Born Ruffians gig a while back (Ruby Coast was in the audience and she pointed them out with euphoric glee). Basically, my tardiness means I'm not really going to be able to offer [...]

There's a whole ton going on in Toronto right now on the topic of great live music. I've personally been out to shows every night for what seems like a decade (more like a week), and there's absolutely no signs of slowing down in the near future, thanks to the work of the Over the Top Festival (OTTF) and others. A quick rundown of what's been seen and heard by yours truly in the not-too-distant past. Will Currie & The Country French (CD Release) @ Sneaky Dee's, April 29th - [...]
Things are happening really quickly these days for Aurora, Ontario's Ruby Coast . In just over a year since they first started playing shows, the youthful bunch have collected eager praise for their rollicking suburban indie pop and found themselves on the "to watch" lists of several labels, promoters, and agents. Now, after making a serious impression as the openers for Tokyo Police Club on a couple eastern Canada tour dates and launching their debut EP, the buzz seems to have just begun. I (heart) Music and Hero Hill both recently [...]

When I was given a copy of the new Ruby Coast EP, it came with the following description attached - "It's kind of TPC-ish, but infinitely better." Is that true? Well, yes and no. Ruby Coast are going to get linked/compared to Tokyo Police Club ; both are indie rock Ontario bands and the Ruby Coast has been warming the stage for the Newmarket crew lately. Both have synth and drum driven indie rock tracks with some shouted choruses (and the vocals do sound similar at times), but I really don't [...]
