Rufus Thomas's finest achievement gets the reissue treatment and proves to stand the test of time. Rufus Thomas is the most overlooked, under-appreciated artist to ever come from the Stax imprint. Period. Done. End of story. There isn't a single other artist who recorded at 926 East McLemore Avenue in the 1960s and 1970s that was as dismissed, discounted and disrespected as the man who gave Stax its first real hit with "Cause I Love You" in the '60s. Why? Well, it's a combination of reasons, really. Thomas's knack for absurdity...
Stax's elder statesman hits a funky '70s groove R&B singer Rufus Thomas had been with Stax for over a decade when he recorded this 1970 album. He and daughter Carla had hooked up with Stax's predecessor, Satellite, as early as 1960, and Rufus scored a Top 10 hit with "Walking the Dog" in 1963. He released a steady stream of singles throughout the 1960s, with only limited success until 1969's "Do the Funky Chicken." Though it only rose to #23 on the Pop charts, it was a big hit on soul radio, and the [...]
(Out now on Concord/Stax Remasters ) "The Philosopher of Soul," Arkansas-born Taylor was an early disciple of Sam Cooke, taking over Sam's part in the renowned gospel group the Soul Stirrers before landing up at Stax-Volt in the mid-Sixties. The next-to-last of Taylor's LPs for Stax, this 1973 swank up Soul Street is, along with Big Star's three-album output and a few Rufus Thomas and Shirley Brown singles, among the label's last notable recordings before the Memphis powerhouse folded in 1975. The wiseass persona Taylor displays on "Cheaper to Keep Her" exhibits only one [...]

Rufus Thomas serves up some tasty funky chicken.

Well, what I really should say is that we are running out of things to say about Christmas. We already took our potshot at the right-wing TV pundits, and we already did our "tired of Christmas" thing and of course the good ol' commercialization of Christmas thing. We can still do the ol' Peace on Earth thing ... But we're not running out of Christmas tunes! MP3: "A Jordan Xmas" by Tracy Morgan MP3: "Christmas Time Is Here Again" by My Morning [...]

The first Christmas soul mix was very popular. Thank you to all the kind people who took the time to say nice things about it (and about my efforts here in general). Comments are always appreciated. As I pointed out in the blurb for the first mix, I held back a lot of great stuff for the follow-up. So this one might be even better than the first compilation. You be the judge of that. Be advised that in this batch are a couple of tracks that might not appeal to your mother: Rufus Thomas (Carla's [...]

Our favourite funker Scratch n Sniff has a couple more tracks to shake your tooshy too :) If you haven't heard it yet we highly recommend you check out his SlothBoogie Guestmix ! Rufus Thomas - Fried Chicken (scratchandsniffs finger licking re-rub) by scratchandsniff Boney M [...]
Soul music greats in concert.
I want so badly to live in a world where something like this can actually happen. Oh, that's right. I do. I can't find the words to express how much I want to be like this. Rufus Thomas: "The Breakdown" from Wattstax

Ranger (2001-2010) Damn ... it's time to say goodbye to my back porch beer drinking buddy, ol' Ranger. He lived with us for about nine years and yesterday he moved on over to the next life. He wasn't afraid of anything that crawled, climbed or slithered. The heat or cold didn't bother him, although he didn't mind paying a visit indoors once in a while. That sonovagun liked to run, but he never ran away. Adios, big boy - we'll keep your house in case you ever come this way again. [...]

must - resist - urge - to post - another - Janelle - Monáe... I want to start by acknowledging our pet psychiatrist, Dr. Blues - family friend, decent head shrinker, my stepfather's best friend (a major feat of tolerance), and above all a mean harmonica player and dedicated aficionado of great soul and R&B. It was Dr. Blues who prompted me to pursue a burgeoning interest in Stax Records, which led to... Rufus Thomas, "Walking the Dog" - from [...]
Rufus Thomas was not really a bluesman, but he was a great showman. I loved his music back in the day. According to Wikipedia; Rufus Thomas, Jr. (March 27, 1917 – December 15, 2001) was a rhythm and blues, funk and soul singer and comedian from Memphis, Tennessee, who recorded on Sun Records in the 1950s and on Stax Records in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the father of soul singer Carla Thomas and keyboard player Marvell Thomas. A third child, Vaneese, a former French teacher, has a recording studio in upstate New York and sings [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion will issue the career retrospective disc, 'Dirty Shirt Rock N' Roll,' on Mar. 30, compiling the skuzz punk blues trio's work from 1992 to 2001. Alongside songs from JSBX's first six albums are several bonus cuts, including some noteworthy collaborations from those years. "We tried to give a good sense of what the band was about back then," Spencer tells Spinner from his home in New York City. "There's quite a few guests [...]

I just can't get over losin' you And so if I seem, broken and blue Walk on by, walk on by Foolish pride, that's all that I have left Thanks to a wonderful teacher in high school, I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the entire Stax singles catalog almost immediately upon becoming interested in 60's R+B. I went from one cd, Otis Redding's Greatest Hits, Volume 2 to The Complete Stax Singles 1959-1968. I think a lot of folks can hand something this comprehensive to a [...]
