If all his Shakespeare and opera was getting a little heady for you, Rufus Wainwright 's new release is just the thing. Out of the Game , a title presumably reflecting on the singer's recent absence from the pop circuit that made his name, is packed full of light, artistic goodies, 12 tracks of primarily dreamy confections that alone would be a complete album from any other artist. But Wainwright is also a consummate songwriter, and ultimately all those tasty little pop nuggets serve as glittery packing peanuts for one of his best-ever compositions. The opening [...]
There's a strange, stumpy review of the Rufus Wainwright gig at the Lyceum today: RUFUS Wainwright's new album is called Out Of The Game. Is this going to be a tortuous football reference? Appropriate then that while the rest of Britain was glued to the Manchester derby, fans at London's Lyceum were watching an artist who's nearly as flamboyant as Mario Balotelli himself. Psst, Gordon: Rufus isn't in the closet. You don't have to use "flamboyant" as code. Rufus belted out the Mark Ronson-produced album's best tracks, including Montauk – a song [...]

Rufus Wainwright has just released his seventh studio LP Out of the Game . The album is a result of his recent collaboration with friend and producer Mark Ronson. It showcases a mature Wainwright with some of his most honest and intuitive song work to date, with songs being rooted in recent life experiences and personal relationships. The genre-blending album of 70s inspired songs was developed among the two collaborators over a period of six months, followed by an inspiring recording session that tracked 16 songs in just eight days. The album features live takes from musicians out of [...]

Santigold - Master Of My Make Believe Santigold's 2008 debut album was a bold and original piece of work, but has she lost any of her magic in the intervening four year period? Master Of My Make Believe is another enjoyable and eclectic album, featuring production from Diplo, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Boys Noize, and while it will be enough to keep Santi on our collective radar, it doesn't quite have the same powerful, fearless energy as album number one.

Look at all of this new music. By any means, this isn't a heavy week for music as many of the big-hitters will weigh in this summer. More of that later, let's focus on what's right in front of us. You saw us feature Father John Misty as our Song of the Week back in March and we're happy to announce his new album released today called Fear Fun . Fr. John Misty is under the infamous Subpop label which manages to take on so many good artists year after year. Stream the [...]

It started out as simple way to honor the life and music of Bob Dylan , by Rolling Stone editor Austin Scaggs at his favorite local East Village bar, but over the course of a decade Dylan Fest has become an annual raucous event that's a must attend for any Zimmy fan. Now in its tenth year, the two-night event will celebrate Mr. Dylan's 71st birthday on May 24 (his actual birthday) and 25 at New York's Irving Plaza, with another impressive roster of musicians that includes Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes), Matt Vasquez (Delta Spirit), Nicole [...]

I've never loved Rufus Wainwright . On a personal level I find something off-putting about his attitude and persona. That would be easy to excuse if I enjoyed his music. Unfortunately I don't find that very compelling either. So you may say my expectations were not high when I listened to his new studio album, Out Of the Game (out May 1st). Imagine how surprised I was then, when the title track came booming through my speakers. The near-Gospel number has the rarest of qualities for a Wainwright song: it's catchy. He [...]
Wainwright doesn't quite make good on all of his predictions for this collaboration with producer Mark Ronson. He does, however, make the best Rufus Wainwright album in years. Since word got out that Rufus Wainwright would be working with Mark Ronson and the Dap-Kings on his new album, there's been virtually no need to speculate on the sound with Wainwright, himself, providing so many descriptors. Radio friendly! Commercial! Sexy! Danceable! These weren't too surprising, considering both Ronson's past work and Wainwright's facility at shifting gears from theatrical pomp to barroom balladry to thoroughly modern pop. If Out of the [...]
And for another opinion... Out of the Game showcases Wainwright at his laziest. His over-inflated ego is coasting on the fact that everyone will pretty much love whatever he produces. Out of the Game begins with the banal title track whereby Wainwright decries any form of humility he might have once had. In a finger-wagging declaration, Wainwright places some pretty needless judgment on a younger generation of gay men who, according to him, seem to lack any sense of moral decency. All irony, of course, is lost on this continuously hailed "songwriting genius", for lest we forget [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Universal Rufus Wainwright has had a manic couple of years. Though it has culminated in the heights of the Canadian singer's acclaimed new album, Out of the Game -- produced by Mark Ronson, who cut his teeth working with Amy Winehouse and Adele -- it has not been an easy ascent. His mother Kate [...]
For some, Rufus Wainwright will always be a master of dramatics. He is their coruscating vision in the darkness, possessing a voice that cannot help but flood every syllable with such high emotion that he leaves you clinging helplessly to the wreckage of melody waiting for the gale force to subside. Such furiously bombastic feelings were bled dry after the punishing grief-soaked tribute to his late mother All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu that it was psychologically impossible for Rufus to wring out any further midnight melancholia. He has now emerged blinking into [...]

"Let's meet in a respectable dive/On the somewhat safe side of the street/And have a beer," suggests Rufus Wainwright on "Respectable Dive", midway through Out of the Game , his seventh studio album, conceding that his hedonistic days are now well behind him. Soon to be a spouse, already a dad, Out of the Game is Wainwright's most domestic record, and his most relaxed yet. As the title and title track suggest, he's comfortable with his outsider status as the pop star who's never been exceedingly popular (except among his devoted [...]
