Filed under: Music Appreciation With the fifth season of ' Weeds ' debuting last night, the show's star, Mary Louise Parker , tells Spinner what music she's been high on these days. " Rufus Wainwright -- I'm kinda obsessed with Rufus," she says. While Wainwright's lush piano pop isn't exactly in tune with the "buzz" bands that 'Weeds' usually features, we'll agree that he is good for those more mellow Sunday mornings. Next

Κι έτσι κάποτε, αγνοί κι ελεύθεροι, θα κερδίσουμε την αιώνια ζωή! Rufus Wainwright : Do I Disappoint You

Fookin' marvellous, not only is it Friday but this weekend is supposed to be stunning and there are all sorts of fun and capers planned between now and Monday. Firstly, tonight Honeytrap - one of my favourite bands - are playing Sneaky Pete's with Meursault, and I am really looking forward to it. Then tomorrow we have a marathon double Toad Session day of mentalism, with Found coming in at about two in the afternoon and Honeytrap at six. It is going to be, I think it's safe to say, fucking hectic and probably very drunken, [...]

Lucy Wainwright-Roche is literally following in her illustrious family's footsteps, her father Loudon Wainwright III , her mother Suzzy Roche ( The Roches ), not to mention her brother and sister Rufus and Martha Wainwright - Lucy Wainwright-Roche is stamping her very own indelible mark on the music scene. Needless to say music is very much in Lucy’s blood and when her brother Rufus Wainwright invited her to sing on one of his 2006 US tours, she left the teaching classroom to pursue her love of music. Written By Phillip Mottaz Dedicated to those songs that I can't stop playing, humming, or thinking about; the 4+ minutes you fall head-over-heels in love with. Past instances have included 'Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry," The Groovie Ghoulies' "I'm Doin' Fine," and The Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Bold As Love." It's getting warm here in Southern California. A stint of chilly Spring is giving way to Perpetual Summer, and everyone's very excited. I'm often reminded of that Baz Luhrmann [...]
So this year's Creative Loafing Music Issue is officially on the stands -- you can't miss it -- it's a big mixtape. It made me think for a minute they had decided to change the orientation of the paper. (They haven't.) That could be one strategy to keep people reading ...

Today is the 10th anniversary of the Columbine shootings. I was curious to see if there were any tribute-style YouTube clips about the event, since it did take place before the advent of widespread online video. Surprisingly, there are quite a few; more surprisingly, most are not altogether different from the graduation montages I looked at a little while back. Both are sort of sad, wistful, and nostalgic, and accompanied by very similar tunes-but instead of fun in the sun, you get pictures of horror and loss and death. But then they take an odd turn. Let's take [...]
This afternoon's press release simply reads: *In addition to Prima Donna (premiering at The Manchester International Festival this July), Rufus' first opera will have its North American premiere at Luminato (Toronto Festival Of Arts & Creativity) in June of 2010. More details to follow.* Rufus is featured on the latest War Child compilation LP. MP3: Rufus Wainwright [...]

I'm not the biggest fan of April Fools' Day - I tend to be fairly gullible, and while do a decent job spotting most hoaxes a mile away, every year I read something I spend at least five minutes excitedly (or not so excitedly) believing. But for me, April Fools means three things - it's the birthday of my sister's oldest cat, Tink; it's the anniversary of the day I got my driver's license (eleven years ago - way to make me feel old, Time); and finally, it's a fantastic occasion to listen to the first [...]

Far be it from me to mistake "unplugged" for folk; as we've been discussing since day one here on Cover Lay Down, if folk is anywhere, it is predominantly in the sense and sensibility, not in the accident of instrumentation or performance. But there are an increasingly large number of folkblogs and small folk labels such as Song, By Toad and Hinah running their own sessions, and sharing them via the web. And though they're not exclusively folk, the musicians that other small-scale, live-session-producing blogs and recording studios [...]

“It’s very laid back and just chill,” said Rufus Wainwright to us about his plans for his upcoming shows. “An evening with Rufus in the living room situation." That's exactly how his show at Kansas City's Uptown Theatre show was: a nice, intimate performance. Since we couldn't describe the show in any better words than what Wainwright himself already said, we'll let our pictures do the talking: [...]
![Who Should Perform "The Curly Shuffle" For The Soundtrack Of That "Three Stooges" Remake? [Burning Questions]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1614573_lg.jpg)
Those of you bemoaning the lack of original ideas in culture today will probably need to go back to bed after hearing the news that MGM is planning to make a big-budget movie about the Three Stooges, the comedy trio whose antics supposedly embody the gender divide. (At least that's what my sociology professor in college thought, although he was also partially responsible for the whole "Don't Ask Don't Tell" thing so his views on the subject might be a little, um, quaint.) Sean Penn is reportedly set to play Larry (guess that whole "shaking the Spicoli character" thing didn't [...]

Pearl Jam re-issue their seminal album 'Ten' on Monday. One of the bonus tracks from the re-issue ‘Brother’ is proving to be a huge radio hit in the US. It makes radio history by becoming the first previously unreleased track to rocket to No. 1 on the US modern rock charts. Following the great success on US radio it is now No. 2 at Rock radio in both Australia and Canada – a universal hit! Next week is Teenage Cancer Trust week at the Royal Albert Hall , highlights [...]

It's tough not to refer to a band as being "art-rock," (a term I usually loathe) especially when they are playing a theater in an art museum. But the Dirty Projectors certainly have that sound about them, as well as a plethora of other styles and influences, and all of them were on full display during their lively set at the McGuire Theater at the Walker on Friday night. Guitarist/vocalist (and head Projector) David Longstreth brought with him a five-piece backing band that kept up nicely with his often frantic pace and unorthodox time and tone changes, and filled the [...]
When I listen to Michael Zapruder 's latest solo effort (is it a solo album if you have 15 people on the album?), I get a lot of stuff. There's some Rufus Wainwright , Arcade Fire , Vic Chesnutt , and maybe even a little Beck . Then there's the wide range of instrumentation. Some songs are large, sprawling machinations, while others end up being solitary numbers with little more than guitar and some words. You might be hard-pressed to say some songs are on the same record if you listened to [...]
