Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Dave Vann So Friday, 12/21/12, was not the end of the world as some people had interpreted the Mayan calendar as predicting. But it did make for one hell of a great party deep in Mayan territory, on the Yukatan Peninsula, where multiple music festivals brought hundreds of thousands of fans over the weekend to celebrate whatever the date of Mayan significance would bring. But [...]

Win our top 31 albums of 2012 ! Read the original review . You never know what to expect for Chan Marshall , aka Cat Power . As a performer, she has traversed a variety of genres and singing styles throughout her career. It wouldn't have surprised anyone if her latest release came out as a dubstep/soul mashup. Thankfully, Marshall surprised us by being on top of her game: on Sun (her first album of new material since 2006), the Atlanta native [...]
Some fast, in-your-face, indie punk for your hump day. The Corsairs are four Melbourne boys who've been doing some good stuff for a while now. Their brand newy, Ruin takes on more of a punk vibe than their previous work (all of which you can stream on their soundcloud). It still kills though! ... Miks
Obviously, if you make a crappy jukebox musical out of Jeff Buckley songs, you'd not only want to treat Buckley shabbily; why not beat up another much-loved cultural institution at the same time ? A Jeff Buckley musical is reportedly set to enter development in New York. The show, titled The Last Goodbye after one of Buckley's best known songs, will be a contemporary telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, set to the late singer-songwriter's music and lyrics. Spoilers: They all die in the end. I mean, it's obvious. If you can't be [...]
The second EP from Connecticut-bred, L.A.-based singer-songwriter Liz Wood offers up the edgy, angsty fare meted out by many of the confessionalists you might have liked in the ’90s. Inspired, she says, by the end of a long relationship, Wood's second EP "Into My Own" (out in October) is a jagged little empowerment pill for people who, once or twice, probably trusted too much, and are now more wary than their hearts want them to be. Wash down with something strong. ||| Download: "Ruin" [...]

It's a fairly damning indictment of our modern times that search engine results for the enigmatic Chan Marshall are proceeded by the terms Twitter or, somewhat more worryingly, Giovanni Ribisi. It's the latter that most pertinently concerns Sun , this Marshall's ninth studio effort under the guise of Cat Power , and although the songwriter has oft been earmarked as a wallower there's a stirring resilience to these eleven tracks penned in the wake of her separation from the aforenamed and publicly shamed schmuck. Sun may mark the dawning of a new era for Marshall – [...]

Cat Power - Sun By Andrew Seaton Would Elliott Smith’s records be as poignant if it hadn’t been for his depression? Would Mark Oliver Everett’s early discography be the same if he hadn’t experienced the family traumas that permeate Eels discography? Of course, a good album is never worth mental illness or a drug problem. Nonetheless, while somewhat trite to state it, the tribulations of an artist’s personal life always affect their creative output. This correlation is amply displayed with Sun, the new release from Cat Power [...]
"(...) if Cat Power does indeed have seven lives, they’re all present in this album which strikes by how eclectic it is (...)." Cat Power - Sun (2012) 9.5/10 Matador Records As we mentioned earlier last week in our feature looking back on Cat Power’s prolific career, her 9 th studio album Sun is being streamed on the internet and will be out very, very soon. Having grown from a Nirvana sound-alike to a raspy voiced folk singer, Chan Marshall now proves that [...]

We're being spoiled like a collective of little bitches for great albums this year, and way, way, way up at the top of the pile is Cat Power 's latest LP Sun , her first since 20082s Jukebox . If you're a fan then you've probably already been mesmerised by the insatiable "Ruin" and "Cherokee" , two of the strongest and most captivating tracks we've heard Chan Marshall [...]
