As much as I love post-rock, I'm going to come out and say it: the majority of it isn't very imaginative at all, and can end up sounding like a band ripping off Explosions in the Sky/Mogwai/Sigur Rós etc. if not done well. However, there were a number of them in my 2011 end-of-year favourite albums list (6 out of 20), and there were three others that barely missed the cut, so all in all I reckon that last year was an extremely strong 12 months for post-rock. On the evidence of the long-awaited Rumour Cubes [ Twitter / Facebook [...]

With the release of The Narrow State , Rumour Cube continue their peculiar and successful blend of sweeping arrangements and aggressive deployments. 'The University Is A Factory', a song in four movements, kicks off the six-track experience. Lead by Hannah Morgan's violin and Terry Murphy's viola, it blends that acoustic string-wrenching with electronic counterparts, in a broad aural landscape; you wonder whether they have Philip Glass in mind, and particularly his LP Glassworks . While the long held notes of this opening gambit hint, practically form the beginning, at the slow drum and [...]

I really don't like these lists very much. It is pretty much impossible to say who will have a good year, who will plod along as usual, who will split up or vanish without a trace, or anything else. It's also hard to say what counts as having a good year. Playing to a wee tent at at festival? A "triumphant" sell out gig to about 150 people in Glasgow or Edinburgh? The whole exercise always seems a tad pointless to me, you'd be better off sticking some band names on the wall and throwing darts to select them. That [...]

The Narrow State art by Lauren Mortimer Good news, everyone! The news falls outside the increasingly shaky grounds of the "Scottish bands" remit of Aye Tunes, but since I like the band you can just go sit in the corner quietly if you have a problem with that. Rumour Cubes have released some details about their forthcoming debut album. Titled The Narrow State, the album will be released on 27th February 2012. I'm already looking forward to it. [...]

You can stream all the songs in this mix using the Yahoo media player at the bottom of the page OR if you are browsing with Chrome you can play (and scrobble ) the whole page using the ex.fm extension OR [...]
Out of London, England comes the ambitious 6-piece outfit Rumour Cubes. The group recently released their debut 3-song EP, We Have Sound Houses Also, which has earned them buzz from the likes of Nick Cave collaborator Warren Ellis. The record is sweeping in scope, with strings and mild electronics weaving to tell a compelling, completely instrumental story. You can grab the EP for free

by teepoo Influenced by instrumental bands such as Explosions in the Sky , Rumour Cubes shows you their very intricate experimentations with instrumental sounds. They are a 6 piece group of instrumentalist featuring: Joe Bartlett (bass) Siew Cottis (viola) Hannah Morgan (violin) Omar Rahwangi (drums) Adam Stark (guitar, electronics) Simon Stark (guitar, electronics) They've worked with film makers and poets and I wouldn't be surprised if their melodies were used one day in a movie because their instrumental [...]
